Well customization is the same for every car except for body kits which were unique to each car. Performance customization is a different category since it may always be the same but that is perfectly fine because you want the freedom to build your car your way.

@@Scorpio19110 Agreed. It should have been like a sidestory, where your do competitions to get recognized instead of "ricing" your car. Forcing the player to modify their car with newer parts kinda contradicted with the philosophy of tuning, it's your car, your taste. Most Wanted was better in terms of speed and racing, as well pursuit, which didn't make it into Underground 1 + 2. Carbon also introduced autosculpt(?) and that was great. Any NFS had something, that made them great, though.

Fun thing to note (which might explain some of the odd car choices). The NTSC and PAL versions had slightly different car lists, specifically starter cars. NTSC had the Acura RSX and Honda Civic SI while the PAL versions had the Peugeot 106 GTI and the Vauxhall Corsa. From what I can tell it's regional differences based on what cars were available in each region. I'm also pretty sure it's the only NFS game to have done this.

that sub-section of gameplay is what actually got me interested in sim racing, and taught me some of the basics so i wouldn't be super intimidated by the cold spreadsheets that are sim racing setup menus. i sucked at building them initially because NFSU2 tuning sensibilities don't match up to other sim racers, but i eventually learned how to make cars handle the way I want them to in sim racing games like AC and iRacing through experimentation. the best thing is, you didn't even need to mess with the tuning menus in NFSU2 to have fun driving the cars. it was just a neat little addition for obsessives like myself to eek out as much performance from a car as possible, and i wish more arcade racers did that these days.

While I completely understand your point about the last stage of the game, I almost never have that issue. I've played all the way through this game countless times (recently did another one) and enjoyed almost all of it. But unfortunately, I have to agree that it does drag on a bit too long and that the final boss race is pretty pathetic honestly, especially compared to what you had to go through to get to the final race... Still, I love this game to my core and probably won't ever stop doing playthroughs every so often.

U2 is to this day my favourite arcade racing game, bar none. The only thing I always hated about it is the absurd rubberbanding. The moment you get in front of another car, chances are you're never going to see that car ever again until the results screen at the end of the race and even if they're in front of you, they're relatively easy to catch. But the moment you enter an URL race, if they're in front of you, they'll be almost impossible to catch and if they're behind you, even if you spin them out of make them crash into something and they fall like 10+ seconds behind, they'll catch you again in 2 laps if they feel like taking it easy, lapping at an average of 3 seconds a lap faster than you, which is physically impossible for the player to do, no matter how maxed out their car is or how good of a driver they are.
@HeroManNick132

The issue that you had regarding the uniques and the star system part way through the game is actually what kept me from finishing Underground 2 for roughly a decade. I had the game when I was about 7 on the gamecube and got to the point where there were no races and I was just stuck, and unlike now, 7 year old me didn't have the benefit of looking up my issue on the internet and I eventually just stopped playing. It wasn't until I was 17 and playing the game again that I figured the issue out. I honestly feel like the term "Flawed Masterpiece" may as well be made for this game. UG2 is so good and one of my favorite games of all time and yet there are a lot of mindboggling decisions where the game just kind of has these features like the star system but it makes no attempt to really tell you when you're doing something wrong. No "Hey you need more stars to progress! You can get unique parts by winning outrun races!" It just kind of sits there and expects you to figure it out. Which, I guess is fine when you're older but when you're a kid it sucks.

The Pug 206 makes sense for this game trying to appeal to a global audience, as that was a very popular car in the European tuning scene at the time. Same with the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa that was a regional exclusive to the EU version as well. Personally I've never felt like the Supra was lacking in this game. Or at least it isn't once you upgrade it a bit. When I have played this game multiple times over the years I have found once you get past the opening parts, you can't use new cars you unlock right out of the dealer anymore. They need to be upgraded to at least a reasonable degree before they are competitive. Some cars are worse than others before you do that, but I've never had an issue after bringing them up to the level they should be at that point in the game.

ae88 is a misconception, that's not how toyota chassis codes work. just because it says ae88 in the vin doesn't change the chassis code. the sr5 vin says ae86, would you consider that more of an ae86 than the gts because the VIN says ae88? if it's a rwd e80 generation corolla with a 4a engine it's an ae86. that means usdm sr5, gts, european gt, and jdm gt, gt-apex and gt-v. it's just a weird thing with toyota VIN's. most e90 corolla VIN's are completely different than their actual chassis code. same with the usdm aw11, it says someone like aw16 iirc. and i think usdm ma61's say 67 or something like that - Reddit user 3 years ago

Kid me just love the idea of outrun races so imagine my surprise that sometimes they gave out unique parts when completed, it felt amazing to find out organically. I was sorely disappointed that when you do outrun too much, the game won't spawn any racers in the openworld to limit it.
@bruhSaintJohn
@bruhSaintJohn Год назад
It's worth doing all of the outrun races in free roam simply because of one reason: Doing so will completely remove other racers from the world until the next stage or the next upgrade. You can tell if the racers are about to disappear by transparency of their arrow on the minimap. If it's really transparent - the next victory's probably gonna do something. And it's really useful because these guys constantly spawn on the same lane as you, just 300 meters ahead. They can get quite annoying, so it makes sense to remove them. If you want to get rid of them when all upgrades are claimed - save and quit on the highway, then try to win 2-4 outruns in the row. Because saving after a single outrun and going back would cause their minimap arrows to be reset back to solid orange. That should do it.

One aspect of this game (and some other NFS games) that I love so much is how viable you can make the earlier "shitbox" cars can be for late game using upgrades, so they never ran out of usefulness and if you're really attached to them you can just keep using them. The lack of this one aspect frustrates me a little bit (just a little) with many other racing series that use different cars as the main system of progression, where you ditch your old car for a newer better one. While it is nice that it encourages you to try other cars for variety, sometimes I just don't want to drive these "better" cars and just want to drive the car I want to drive. It isn't realistic, but this is the one department where arcade racers with real cars can really shine imo.

This game holds an odd place in my head. I actually played it decades ago, as a wee kid, with my older cousin’s setup and steering wheel. NFSU2 is probably the first game I’ve gone out of my way to get and play (not that hard on PC, especially *ahem*ed), and I actually hit myself with a wave of nostalgia when I booted the game up. I’m somewhat disappointed you didn’t mention much about the European offerings. This game has the only two Peugeots in Need for Speed as a whole, and the only other options are a VW Golf, two Audis, and an Opel Corsa that is only available if you have the European version or mod, with the American alternatives being the Honda Civic and Acura RSX. In terms of handling, I’d say it’s best exemplified by the StreetX races. The cars will grip up and turn all happy days when you ask nicely, but still slip out if you’re not nice. It somewhat reminds me of Art of Rally in its handling. For customization, sure, your car will look like ass at one point, but I made sure to focus my looks and everything. I stuck with the Audi A3, and went for the colors of the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 as a real-life reference, and I’m honestly very satisfied with my car. You can craft an awesome ride, but not much of the parts actually look good. I’d also like to mention the frankly hilarious rubber banding that can occur. Sometimes, the rival AI car that gets rubber banded the hardest will get stuck on a wall or something. Not a big deal, until the system essentially ends up with a Backwards Long Jump situation and applies so much velocity the car will go flying and ping pong along the circuit in frankly hilarious fashion. It’s just so absurd that I love when it happens. One last thing: Where’s the mention of Black Bettie!? It’s probably more of a meme song, but it actually slaps so hard I get excited and just refuse to change menus until the song finishes. Well, that’s all the opinion of a 20-year-old or whatever. WOAH BLACK BETTIE, BAMALAM

Sure 71 grand is a LOT of money and technically you end up spending thousands more through upgrades and customisation but that's what made this game and the first Underground especially so special: taking a cheap(ish) car and building it up to keep up with or outrun supercars while having it be personalised to your liking.

@@CyanRooper I think the reason it wasnt included is because every other car has its engine in the front, and developers made things like the hoods and some engine parts custimizable visually. 8:31 it's not a corolla sound, it's a Ferrari 360 sound, which is applied liberally for many cars. And it's not the sole weird mix up (A3 3.2 with Golf sounds, Eclipse 2G with V6 sounds and to a lesser degree the Evo with S2000 sounds) IMO U2 whilst is a huge step up from U1 in many regards, it's not as nailed down as U1; it doesnt have the same exhilarating feeling as the first game, which I would pin down to the aesthetics (it's kinda less gritty than the first game), also the soundtrack is the weakest of BB soundtracks. Not to mention (as everyone has pointed out) the game drags a bit too long as it goes on
@HeroManNick132

All cars sounds in the game are shared by at least another car. The only truly unique sounds that are not shared with other cars are the 3 Subaru WRX sounds and the 2 Mazda Protege sounds which are only used by stock and street upgrade of the Sentra. Honestly why people hate so much the Ferrari 360? The Chevrolet Cavalier sound is even more annoying which is also used by the Peogeot 106, 206, Miata, Centra... Seriously people don't know this shitbox car sound exist? The Ferrari 360 sound is not even that much used only for I6 cars (Supra, IS300, Skyline) and the both Mazda RX-7/RX-8. Not to mention how the S2000 sounds are also very exaggerated and also very commonly used (for stock and upgraded). Heck even a fucking VR6 Audi TT use a Honda S2000 sound as max upgraded and the Hyundai Tiburon GT which doesn't even have a VR6 too unlike the Audi A3 which you mentioned. Black Box in my opinion they were bad at making accurate sounds, especially when it comes to I5 engines. Even till NFS The Run they couldn't get a 5 cyllinder sound for the Quattro and the Focus but Criterion could? Sometimes I question Black Box so much. And even the Nissan 200SX there became the new " Mitsubushi 2G Eclipse" if you know what I mean. The only very best job that they did with the car sounds was only in NFS PS and then from later on the same story again. Also fun fact: They used again the Ferrari 360 sound in NFS The Run but for the Aston Martin One-77's exhaust mixed with Audi R8's engine sound.

About the rubberbanding, I had a routine before each race that seemed to reliably turn off AI rubberbanding for exactly 1 race. It involved restarting the race 2-3 times in a row before the countdown. Once it worked, even on hard difficulty I could easily outrun any opponent in the game using any car in the game and could win races by miles on virtually any track. I could even lap opponents in all of the URL races.

Great video! Just a note for the sound though, some cars like the Skyline have an odd sound on stage 3 engine tuning because it's the sound from a completely different car. One of the many things that were planned for this game was engine swapping, which ended up getting cut. Cars like the RX8 will sound like they have a different engine because that was exactly what was going on, so the Rotaries were replaced by four-bangers and cars like the Skyline would take the engine from a Ferrari 360 Modena, which is one of the cars that was intended to appear but was ultimately cut. If you listen to the engine sound in game and to the sound of a 360 Modena you'll notice that they're very similar. Tl;Dr cars sound different at stage 3 because they're supposed to have had their engine swapped.

This is and will always be the first game I played all the way through and a defining factor in my love for arcade racers. But playing it again for the umpteenth time, it feels pretty clear that the game's ambitions on world building and customization depth were carried out at the cost of difficulty balancing and a memorable ending. The gap between Normal and Hard is absurd and sadly relies on rubberbanding rather than "real" difficulty. It kept going and going until halfway through stage 4, I realised this is one of those padded out long games. I couldn't tough it out. Nfs always has an issue with overly lengthy campaigns but at least there's some semblance to a proper story in undercover and payback, which made me finish them. Carbon was the perfect length for the depth it offers and so is pro street. Most wanted gets boring but it at least has police. Heat has everything but gameplay loop is so good, I spent over 80 hours on it and 30 on campaign even though it was a very short one. I think it is one of those 2000s trends where they padded it out to make it as bang for the buck as possible, because midnight club 2 had the same issue. This is a great video and it really shows why i loved NFSU2 so much to this day, if anything the only bit i'd argue with you on this video is the engine sounds that you talked about, like the Skyline's extreme package being from a Corolla, is actually from a Ferrari 360 Modena, sadly due to time constraints, the devs had to reuse the same engine sound several times, same happens with the RX7, RX8, Supra, Skyline itself, just to name a few, they all use the Ferrari 360 Modena engine sound, for a fair amount of people that was something that threw them off the most, including myself, that noted that several engines were repeated, luckily the modding community is still alive and kicking pretty hard, and throught them i made a mod that fixes that mistake the devs were probably forced to make, bit of a shill but mostly just to clarify a little mistake and give you a little insight of the game's inner workings as well. Other than that, love the video so much and thank you for letting me see a piece of my gaming history in more depth as well, 'cause for me UG2 was really something else, all grip racing with well thought out racing lines, no tap brakes to drift bull, the only gripe was the forced driving to spots, if anything it was the mayor selling point of the game, free exploration and such, it was also sadly what made the game so grindy and stretched out that and the HORRIBLE rubberbanding of the AI, but a feature that in the end was very underrated but ended up being a very big point for a lot of gamers were the tunning menu in the dyno, seeing how your car evolved and reacted to the changes of suspension, ecu, turbo etc was always so freaking cool, i could go on and on but best not for now heheh, still tho, thank you for the video and i'll be eager to see the next one as well

Amazing video, really liked the detailed analysis. I always felt that Black Box’s titles have some lacking points in terms of programming and progression… they are known for ridiculous rubberbandings, progression that takes days to really enjoy, and often difficulty failures. These factors are affecting me as time goes by, because unlike my 2000s days, where I only had 5 games for PS2 and NFSMW/TDU1 for my mediocre family desktop PC, I’m unable to dig them for a very long time as I now have much more games to play through and with my busier life. But still, despite the flaws that are getting stressful as time goes by… I still loved them, with UG2 of course. I loved such consistent, clear, and unique themes. I loved people gathering up and cheering for the races. I loved the soundtrack blasted to my ears along with my car’s engine noise at 300+ km/h. I loved the customization - especially the Tabby and Griffin speeedometer. I didn’t mind the story much, because all that mattered to me was the liveliness, the cars, the ‘monsterization’ with hundreds of parts, drifting in the streets, soundtrack, and the nitrous. There are the content, the atmosphere, the experience I haven’t experienced (to the same way) in other racing games. Maybe it’s because of the PS2-level graphics? Because of Nothing But You (Cirrus Remix)? Custom Gauges with a character inside? I can’t pick the exact reasons. And that is why I remembered this game for over a decade while being unable to play it (as my PS2 Slim’s lens melted long time ago), and why I still often come back to this game on my modern PC. The flaws can be significant to some. But even if the difficulty fails, even when I have to pull up a ‘100% completion savefile’ stuff because of getting tired to deal with the progression, you always have the jacked up cars to stare in the showrooms, drive around and hit the hydrualics button, and do quick races and look at the Tabby. That’s something hard to see in so many other racing games. And that is why it’s called a classic.

It's also difficult picking cars since some are great when stock but fail to make big gains when upgraded. Something I don't miss in later NFS titles. and man, that part about winning outrun races explains an issue I had once. I remember in a playthrough I did as a kid getting stuck with no more races to compete in, I couldn't find any way to progress, not even in upgrades. All along all I had to do was just outrun some cars in free roam. Ugh. I mean, I have eventually beaten the game later in life, but still. EDIT: Oh right, I forgot to say what I thought of your video. I honestly think your review was fantastic, you worded yourself amazingly when describing each aspect. Whether it was the soundtrack, the pacing, content, or driving physics. I think you nailed it for a review. They insist on making big open maps like in other open world games, while Underground 2 and Most Wanted are basically big playgrounds made for cars. Any area around the roads are closed off, but this isn't a game where you walk and look around for quests. I remember each district from bayview much more than the barren countryside of Unbound or the entire map of NFS Heat

Cars like the Peugeot 206 were absolutetly lit on south america, I remember it was crazy seeing that car on the street and being able to go crazy on it in the game

The unfinished races aren't removed, they're just moved to the garage menu after finishing each stage

I feel the same way as the city in U2, I feel like I've been there, I remember places which I don't remember clearly from other games

1. I found a way to get higher marks for the customization stars is by either adding carbon fiber parts or converting the existing body kit parts into CF. Then adding split hood and suicide/scissor door. All these have large star rating numbers. I never had to do outrun for "special parts". 2. Glad NFSU2 Extra Options exists. Adding more starting money finally allowed me to afford the SUVs. I seem to only have enough money for the cars, not the SUVs too.

while it's true that uncompleted races are removed from the map it does not mean you can't complete them. It was too long ago so i dont remember how exactly, but you still have access to all races of previous stages either from garage or from freeroam menu.

i found out you could spin the AI out in underground 2, which sounds obvious but even games like gran turismo don't allow you to pivot the other AI cars as it would obviously trivialize the race. other need for speed games don't let you do this either, except UG1 i believe Also half the soundtrack is on my personal playlist. its amazing.

For the skyline You can leave out some of the engine parts to keep the skyline tone.

NFSU2 is a great game, where you actually dont need to beat to enjoy most of it. which can be seen as a good think actually, dependenting on how much you are into the genre. anyway, great video as always.

08:58 it doesn't matter, there are dozens of us, dozens! But on topic, i loved driving the SUVs back then, probably because i have never seen such a car before and they seemed so out of place. But i need to agree, i've did the same and never played through NfS:U2 back then...

When Caleb pulled up in his GTO, even if I had no knowledge of the game's best cars. I knew I was gonna body him in an evo with a sucky handling.
