A quick and hopefully not so dirty demo of Iambic Mode B keying (squeeze keying as some call it). This video was in response to a question on the Utah CW Operators Facebook page. It was inspired by Loren WB1KE having fun playing around with a paddle after trying a straight key.

That paddle really is a "work of art!" I was fortunate to purchase one of the last few that were available. I purchased it as a gift for my son. I only had a chance to "feel" the action after he opened the box, but I have never used it on the air. I would like to do so sometime. I now use a single-lever key, but totally agree that if using Iambic, mode B is the way to go. I learned first on a straight key, then moved to iambic - which I believe is the most common approach, but when teaching my son CW, he actually preferred the paddle to the straight-key right from the start. I let him go with what interested him the most, and that worked great for him. While you don't need to get a top-of-the-line paddle to start with, it sure feels good when you have a good one that feels solid (doesn't slide around on you when using it) and feels smooth. I find that when visiting someone else's station, I prefer to bring my own paddle with me to use because I am used to the contact spacing and resistance settings I prefer. It seems that my ham buddies think my contact spacing is too close compared to what I like, and for some reason, they'd rather not have me making adjustments to their paddles! ;-). That can even be true for the "keyer" that might have its own idiosyncrasies. Max, I noticed you are using the K1EL Winkeyer. That is what I have settled on and even when using my key with radios that have built-in keyers, I'd rather use that external keyer. My wife is not a ham, but she likes soldering, so she actually built the Winkeyer kit and gave it to our son for a Christmas present several years ago.

Thanks again for the comment... yes it is a beauty. Glad to hear you got one of the ~140 or 150 made, I can't remember. Mine is serial number 15. Thumbs up on Iambic B as you can see from me. Max NG7M

I was fortunate to be given a J - 38 straight key, for those uninitiated ! And anyone familiar knows what spitfire machines they are ! Ran that for likely 40 years, having only ever tinkered with any other key, be it Bug, or Iambic, through the years. As I got into my own way, having been known as having a fairly good Fist, I always felt that messing with an Iambic, was throwing off my straight key timing ! Finally, after some Health scares, I decided that if I was ever going to learn how to run an Iambic key, now was the time ! Same thing that motivated me to get the Extra ! Funny how looking at the end of your life, can motivate change, sometimes for the good ! So I threw myself all in, and after hitting a few coordination bumps in the road to success, I began to fly, and never looked back ! And I thought the J - 38 was fast ? For those considering converting to an Iambic key, don't be afraid ! Just do it ! Don't worry about speed ! That will come naturally, the more comfortable you become with the mechanics of the paddles ! Good luck ! Good Dx ! '73 !

I learned on a single paddle, and I use the double paddles like they were single paddle.
@ng7m-ham-shack
@ng7m-ham-shack 2 года назад
Yes, that's what's nice (I think anyway about the double paddle). As demonstrated, you can just treat it like a single paddle, so if you have guest operators in a multi op contest for example, everyone is happy. Thanks for watching! Max NG7M

Thanks for the great video! I am going to switch from my very difficult to learn single paddle to iambic now! I am semi ambidextrous so I decided to learn CW on my left hand so I can take notes on my right. QUESTION: Should I keep the dits on the left? That way I can sit at any station and slide the key to my left hand. Sounds OK?
@ng7m-ham-shack
@ng7m-ham-shack 3 года назад
That is a good question. I would say yes... that would be the way to do it. I don't think there is any disadvantage either sticking with dits on the left and using your left hand.

I don't think you described what Mode B vs Mode A actually is. Did you? It's not just a matter of dits on the left and dahs on the right, correct?
@ng7m-ham-shack

I wasn't comparing mode B to A. I showed mode B and explained that it is usually the default and most operators keying iambic use mode B, especially if just starting to learn. Max NG7M

HI Curtis, it is a Begali Sculpture 60th Anniversary edition. I have really enjoyed it! Keys/Paddles are a personal preference for sure, but this is my favorite. However, what else would I say when you see the cost. ;) Glad you enjoyed the video. 73 de Max NG7M

Now that I’m getting gud with Cw. Can you recommend a key for sending faster than 24wpm? I find myself tripping a lot with the by1. I’ve never heard this explained by a tester. Tu es 73

Hi, I assume you are talking about a paddle based on the video. There are many great paddles out there... for Iambic, I believe one of the best for the price is the Kent Paddle. You get bearings on the levers and it's heavy... stays put and is built really well. There are others to look at too. I would go for the Kent over the Bencher any day for a first time paddle that isn't on the cheap end of things. Search for the Kent paddles on DX Engineering for example. Good Luck and thanks for the comment. Max NG7M

@@ng7m-ham-shack thanks max. Yes I see many vids of people running fast speed contests. I assumed they run begalli or magnetic paddles. Some people tell me to run the space further apart. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@JayN4GO Hi Jay, I think it's a matter of preference or what operators are used to. Don't get me wrong, I love the art of those high end keys / paddles as you can see, but I think if you are objective, there is a very quick diminishing return as the price goes up. It's like an audiophile, to get that last 5% of performance, you really need to pony up on the cost on your audio equipment! :) Plus the high end keys are just art and it's fun to have something in the 21st century that was crafted in a way where the machinist / artist actually cared about the product. The Begali keys and some of the highly crafted keys are going to hold their value. Key's that are not just finished blocks of metal (with some power coating) are one thing, i.e. N3ZN keys are operationally great and solid I'm sure, but let's face reality, they are not a piece of machining artwork... the art and machining of a higher end Begali is in another universe (and other manufacturers out there). A Kent paddle... maybe not as much, however I have a Kent paddle that was manufactured in Preston England with the label, so they tend to hold their value, but again, they started at a lower price to begin with. Anyway, I digress. It's all fun and a good operator will always do better on less quality key over a poor operator on a high dollar key. It's like antennas and transceivers, put your money in the antenna over over the transceiver any day of the week. Put your time in as an operator with a entry level key and you will out do a poor operator with an expensive key. Anyway, it's all fun. Owning quality stuff and supporting manufactures what still care about quality is a good thing too as we all know. 73 Max NG7M

Aren´t you talking about mode A? Isn´t it in mode B it completes with one of the opposite?
@ng7m-ham-shack
@ng7m-ham-shack 3 года назад
No I'm talking about Mode B. Mode 'B' as the title of the Video includes. In my 25 years of experience, Mode B is by far the most popular and typically the default setting for any electronic keyer.

Hi Masahiro, sorry about the delay in my response. No, the 60th anniversary edition is no longer available. Begali only made a fixed number of these keys. However, they do have other special addition keys that you can find on their website if you want to join a group of owners that have a limited edition version that may no longer be produced in the future. 73 and thanks for watching my quick and simple demo video. Does it really matter which paddle is the dah and which is the dit?
@ng7m-ham-shack
@ng7m-ham-shack 5 лет назад
Hi Keith, it does if you plan on operating at another station. Really the main reason would be that it is most common in my experience to have the dit on the left (thumb) and the dah on the right (index finger). Technically, I don't think it matters, but for consistence across other operators, I would learn or recommend dit on the the left and dah on the right. I know a very good CW op that learned the opposite way and by the time he realized that almost all others used dit on the left and dah on the right, he was too far in on the learning curve to change. If you do show up to a station is backwards to what you have learned, just rotate the key so the paddles are facing way from you and you can key up over the top of the key and the dit and dah will be reversed. :) That's a quick solution if someone does it backwards and you want to quickly key their paddle. Thanks for watching! Max NG7M

Well, I am one of those that learned the opposite way many, many years ago and as you said, when I realized it wasn't the "conventional" way it was too late. On my good days I could normally keep a QSO at 30 WPM, so it didn't make any difference, except for the point raised - fortunately most good radios have the possibility of inverting the dits and dots inputs in the configuration menu.
