Be aware of the 1st generation NGH 17cc engine! All the problems that I had were from the 1st generation. Stay tuned for an update to see if the parts that I receive fixed the problem. the second generation of the NGH 17CC will have the upgrades already done.

After watching your video, the term newbie comes to mind, but that's ok, we all must learn new things to grow in the hobby. It is a well known practice to use a felt lined clunk in a tank when running gas to eliminate air bubbles from the pickup line. I agree it is a good idea to have a thicker insulated spacer between carb and engine. I did not like the routing of your fuel line right over the top of the cooling fins above your engine. I would have found a better route to the carb, which actually draws fuel from the tank via the built in diaphragm in all walbro gas carbs. You only run fuel pumps on larger engines requiring a consistent, higher volume of fuel supply to keep it running smoothly under load conditions. The extension added to the carb inlet is called a velocity stack, which smooths out the air flow as it enters, providing more consistent engine performance. It's been three years or so since you uploaded this video, but I hope additional comments will provide some insight for fellow modelers.

Hi James. Watched your review of the NGH GT17 petrol engine. I have one of the later engines, with the heat isolating spacer, which helps with some of the problems, but NGH have also realised that the carburettor needed a velocity stack, which improves the flow of air into the carburettor, and stop the fuel being sucked out of the carb, when running your engine inverted. I contacted NGH and was given the part number, and I got a nice blue anodized velocity stack from a company called "Just Engines". Cost around £15. Bolted on in 5 minutes flat and improves the look of the carby as well as improving the running. Hope this helps.

I fly a topflight 60 size corsair and the 17cc engine runs perfect. Was very easy to tune. You never try to run a gas motor without proper fuel filters.

I ended up buying of of these engines. Despite your reveiw. Its a very well designed QUALITY engine. Very smooth very powerfull for a 17cc. I have ut in a 80in hk super cub. Perfect for it. I do have the newer version with the spacer between the carb and the high power cdi unit. But over all. AWSOME ENGINE.

Just be careful on the prop sizes you use and your RPMs. I have thrown multiple rods with this engine.

The 35cc NGH I have had to be sent back to Hobbyking. When it arrived the aluminum throttle arm was broken off and not in the bag or box ? I used a temp arm to break it in on the bench and i could not get it to start. I would get intermitent fires but no run no matter what I did. I have many gassers and tons of nitro's from Fuji's for scale planes (not a fast reactor or super strong but great for scale-My 1/3 Cristen eagle) to DA 85 and 100's for My large scale acro's (DA 85 on a lanier extra 300S for one) that all have ran and started flawlesly. I had to pay to have shipped back and not have not heard back yet ? But customer service was good in regards to the problem and am wondering what they will find ? Not good for My first purchase from Hobbyking but I know things happen and will wait to see. I hope I dont regret this.

Thank you for a great review. I cannot believe NGH would sell anything with this kind of malfunction and design flaw. Your video has done its job, So I'm going DLE. I have been thru the same frustration with a Saito. Sent back engine three times to be fixed for a problem since ownership.

Hi - Just trying to find out if there was a trade distributor for this engine. Saw your video. I think there were problems with early versions , obvious fuel issues . The mk 2 cures them. It can be incredibly frustrating when you cannot figure why an engine is behaving badly. My self - Id have tried tank, clunk etc and when it still remained an issue , return it to where it was sold for back up. I expect you probably bought it direct from China and this gave you a problem . I’m not sure if it’s the same this engine but sometimes parts can have more than one manufacture . This is a situation where a good model trader would have solved problems .

Also a Walbro clunk will take bubbles out of the fuel & suck the fuel out of the tank to the last drop !

This video really needs to be removed. Definitely not an up to date assessment of the ngh product line. These engines are purpose built, and the company is serious and imo will be in the business for many years to come. Durable, well built, and reliable.

Greetings, I have both versions, the first mounted on a 17cc Stuka and the truth is that swimming, of course, has a lot to do with the air and the mounting of the sleeves. Use heavy weights in the tank and a respirator hose, as well as a gasoline filter. all good I run my engine with 6 os klotz synthetic oil. No problem with the engine, that's why buy the second generation if you don't know that it has a separator in the carburetor. very good to dissipate heat right now the 9cc ngh motors are good but I have four and I found the problem if you had one take a 46 ax motor and turn it and you will see that it has one appeared. good but the ngh 9cc motorboats did not have to be easy I counted the lid inside and put the smallest Chamberí and it was clear greeting from the island of enchantment Puerto Rico

James you need to remove this video of the NGH GT17 you made. It is out dated and the new version is one of the best running gas engine I have and I own nothing but gas enginse for my planes. I did had issues with the muffler but I got them all figured out. My NGH GT17 engine spins an APC 14x6 prop at 9200RPM and I have an idle of 2000 RPM. Where is your update.? I like the engine so much I bought the NFG GT25 for my winter project which is a 80" Dyanflite Fly Baby. My NGH GT17 is in a GP Escapade 60 and the engine fly's this plane very well and I think it is over powered!

Heat from the exhaust is probably frying the carb as well, bet this engine would be fine in a cool climate.

Oops sorry that posted before I signed off . You could do with adding a section to your video to explain the MK 2 has a fix . If you do that your video would truly be informing regard the product as it is it smacks of wanting revenge regard the poor quality of your original purchase . Did you try the trader that sold it you or manufacturer ? Again that info would be informative

Almost didn't buy one of these because of this video. You posted a video complaining about the motor and its problems. When the company makes good and gives you the stuff to fix it you never posted another video of it running well as you said you would... Typical.. Thumbs DOWN!

Gas engines need a fuel pump. Your engine will lean out in the air and die,run very inconsistent.

@padams561

This video should be removed! It is wrong. The engines are great as long as you know how to set up a gas engine. The only problem with the first engine was the carb gasket. When I replaced it with the new one the engine tuned easily and has been running perfectly. I have nothing but praise for this engine. I have two. Neither needed a vertical stack. If fuel is coming out of the carb its runing way too rich.
@scottm5425
@scottm5425 4 года назад
I don't buy your diagnosis tbh, the carb is nowhere near the temperatures you talk about being so far from the cylinder head and while running it's cooled by the air flow and the fuel vaporising. Your issue is more likely to be caused by too stiff foam being used for the fuel tank causing foaming. Another solution would be to add an in line header tank as are used in model helicopters.

Way too slow and long winded. I just bought this engine but I felt it would be quicker to learn by trial and error than wait for your speech to come around and repeat everything 4 times.
@daddski1
@daddski1 8 лет назад
lol you are no mechanic for sure. 1. your thoughts on why gas is coming out of the carb is just silly. what temp do you think the carb or throttle body on your car gets up to? What temp do you think gas/oil mix boils at? hint its not under 200 degrees lol. AFTER SOME 40 PLUS YEARS AS A MARINE/2 STROKE MECHANIC i CAN TELL YOU YOU ARE OFF ON EVERYTHING. FOAMING IN YOUR TANK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ENGINE NORE YOUR TANK BEING SMALL. LOL ALL YOU HAD TO DO IS INSULATE THE TANK FROM THE VIBRATION ON YOUR AIRFRAME. Thats it the rest is off as well and your thoughts on this engine is also off friend. every problem you mentioned minus the thickness of the gasket is all OPERATOR ERROR. so yes your initial comment was right... you don't know how to run a r/c gas engine on a plane...
