Bokayé! This 8-string harp from Gabon is called Ngombi and belongs to the ancient family of arched harps that can be seen in the pictographic rock art at the Ennedi Plateau in Chad and the Tassili n'Ajjer cave paintings in Algeria, as well as in Egyptian frescoes. This particular harp is made from a central-African variety of mahogany, with gazelle skin stretched over the resonator body. Originally the strings were made from a type of plant fiber, recently replaced with fishing string for durability. Though harps of similar shape and form are found all across central Africa today, the music of the Gabonese Ngombi is distinctly unique, characterised by 2 simultaneous interlocked rhythms of different time signatures played at a high speed. This music is classical to Bwiti and Mbiri - disappearing but vibrant spiritual traditions practiced by people of the rainforest in Gabon.

Early in Book titled The Banjo studying the role of the banjo (type instrument) in the evolution of music, the author writes, "One particularly rich example of this is a harp called the ngombi, played in the context of Bwiti religious ceremonies practiced in the regions of Gabon and Cameroon since at least the nineteenth century. The harp’s very construction “represents both the microcosmic world of the living and the macrocosmic world of the gods and ancestors.” Bwiti emphasizes the “complementarity of female and male,” and the harp is built so that “the resonator symbolizes the stomach of the female principle, the source of all life” while the neck is “the symbol of male potency.” The “juncture of the neck and resonator” represents “sexual union.” The harp is painted half red, to symbolize the blood of menstruation, and half white, to symbolize semen. But the harp also resonates with the imagery of Nyingwan Mbege, the Sister of God, who is central to Bwiti practice: “her features are carved or sculpted on the shelf of the harp; the resonator is her stomach, her womb, her spiritual Source of Life; the neck and the tuning pegs are her spine and ribs; and the strings, her tendons and sinews.” The sound holes on the harp are positioned so that the two on the top represent her breasts, and a lower one “the birth hole.” When the musician takes up this instrument, Nyingwan Mbege works through him. “The powers of the Sister of God work through the harpist, who is considered to be the guardian of the chapel, and the spirits of ancestor harpists enter the body of the harp, as the rest of the ancestors enter the chapel.” ~ Laurent Dubois page 45.

Basse Ngombi! You're playing is amazing my friend. I have a harp that was made by Bokaye at Ebando.I was forced to leave my harp in Costa Rica. Im wondering if you know of any way to get a harp to the States? Do you know of anyone selling them that is able to ship one to California? I appreciate any insight. Thank you!-Wesley
