Defense creates offense. That was the name of the game. I was very pleased to see Bednar make a critical adjustment by recalling O’Connor and benching Sturm. O’Connor immediately made impact by scoring the first goal for the Avalanche. Forechecking was back on the menu as the team relentlessly hounded the Blues whenever they entered the offensive zone. Regarding the elephant in the room, injures are part of the game. Both plays were not dirty. I don’t expect neither fanbases to understand. It is what it is. Mackinnon and Makar may not be scoring, but this does not mean the Avs don’t have any offensive weapons. Lehkonen and Kadri stepped up when it really mattered. Compher was excellent tonight by winning 8 out of 12 faceoffs (66.7% FOW). Kuemper locked it down after allowing goals from Parayko and O’Reilly. Since Girard is out for extended amount of time, I would expect Byram moved to the 2nd line with Manson and recall Ryan Murray so he can be paired with E.Johnson. Jack Johnson may have more playoff experience, but he is -18 lifetime in the playoffs and 7 years older than Murray. Bednar knew how important it was to win tonight. He had to overplay some of his players. The only players who played less than 10 minutes were Cogliano, Burakovsky and O’Connor. Toews picked up Girard’s workload by playing over 30 minutes. As for Rantanen, he is frustrated but his time will come sooner than later. Edit: Girard is out for the playoffs. Reporters are now investigating Kadri's claim that Binnington allegedly threw a water bottle at him during the TNT's post game interview. If this claim is true, then Binnington is a real scumbag Edit #2: The Athletic has confirmed with their sources that two people have witnessed Binnington throwing a water bottle at Kadri. What a loser
@@paulybeefs8588 I guess Rosen had nothing to do with hitting kadri lol. If Rosen wasn’t there kadri could’ve skated by but instead Rosen knocks kadri into his goalie and blue fans are crying, it’s comical
Not a fan of either team, but I have to say that hit on Girard was bullshit. There's no way that isn't textbook boarding and it makes me sick that he's out for the playoffs because of it.
@@wastelandmetal old hockey heads being old hockey heads. No matter how you slice it, the rulebook is incredibly clear. "Boarding. A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously." If that hit isn't boarding idk what is.
@@rsk9228 it really doesn't matter, because he's making a play on the puck. He didn't make a dramatic turn, or completely change his body positioning before the play. He's literally just skating to a puck and making a play on it, and Barbashev decides to light him up for whatever reason, either to get the crowd going or whatever, but either way it's boarding. The definition is right there clear as day
As an Avalanche fan who HATES Binnington: I hope he's fine. Even though he's a punk, he's a monster in net and if we can't beat the Blues with Binnington, then we can't win the cup. That and of course I would never wish for anyone to be hurt anyway. Obviously also hope Sammy G gets better. Guy has been playing so much better since playoffs started.
41.1 Boarding - A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee. There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the referees when applying this rule. Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging.” 42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame, or in open ice. 43.1 Checking from Behind: A check from behind is a check delivered on a player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend himself, and contact is made on the back part of the body.
Watching Parayko's shot at 0.25 speed and how his stick flexes from 1:01-1:10, my goodness what power. I can't believe the stick doesn't break there! Haha shows how far behind the puck you really need to hit the ice--no wonder my slapshots are such muffins. I'd be livid if I was a Blues fan though, but they're still in this. I just need whoever comes out of this to beat Calgary/Edmonton so please no triple OTs or injuries for the rest of the series!
So many goals on deflected shots of defensemens sticks, the goalie wants to see it come off the shooters stick clearly the whole way in, the D's trying to help, but it's tough to adjust to a deflected puck.
How the hell is that hit on Sammy G not boarding!!!!???????? Like seriously!!!! Can someone please explain that? I've asked before on another hit for someone to explain the rule, but no-one seems to know.
None of you Blues fans have a leg to stand on complaining about Kadri when Barbashev nearly decapitated Girard. Binnington will be fine, Girard may be done for a long long time, and Barbashev was ALOT more deliberate. They aren't even comparable hits.
And that crybaby binnington threw a water bottle at Kadri’s head while he was being interviewed for TV! And yet all the blues fans say that’s ok though… I’ve lost a lot of respect for blues fans over the past couple years but these comments tonight broke the camels back.
Seems like there’s a lot of blues fans that only see things the way they want to. Bunch of crybabies like Bennington and that toddler having a cow the other night about getting called for a totally legit high stick to Manson and then destroying the sin bin cam!
@@kpov2533 Ah yes, clearly Binnington is 100% ready to go and completely uninjured as he passed the doctor's water bottle throwing assessment. Is there lead in the Colorado water supply?
Watching Husso skate backwards was hilarious, also the commentator should look up some synonyms for "available". Way fewer shots for the avalanche this game compared to game one, the blues are figuring it out so better close the series fast Colorado. Kuemper faces more shots than the opposite goalie and he stood firm, great performance from him.
That was dirty hit on Sammy G. #49 left his feet to to hit a player on the boards. Game suspension should be implemented by the NHL player safety. He literally broke his sternum.
You are allowed to leave your feet on a follow through. I would argue that it was boarding. Barbashev wraps his plant leg while Girard is off balance and accelarates through the head (not initial contact). Unfortunately boarding is a judgement call, they were in St Louis, and its the playoffs. Way more intent to injure on this play than the Binnington play though.
Their fans are almost as bad as Boston’s…. If they keep crying and letting their racist rants about Kadri keep going then they’ll surpass all crap fan bases and get to wear the crown of babies throwing fits…and water bottles!
@@Sick_Boy_Rick74 everyone in the league know avs fans are the worst in the league Biggest cry babies out there. Go look at last year vs Vegas I'm right 😭
Please don't give the final score of the game in your description. It spoils it for people who didn't catch the game and also shows up on the Google search results.
Great bounce back game! Unfortunate injuries on both sides. Neither with malicious intent, Kadri and Rosen played hard to the loose puck and both fell into JB. I hope Binnington recovers fast! Girard is out the rest of the playoffs. Hopefully he'll be ok in the long run. Onto game 4!
Rosen was breaking hard making snow while Kadri barrelled in behind him and knocked Bennington out with his right elbow. Kadri deserves suspension for the series.
I am shocked at how disciplined this series has been. So few penalties, not fights, even when Kadri ran into Binnington and when Girard got rocked. Its like they both respect the other's power play so much they are playing so carefully.
Both plays were clean. Blues fans will cry about Bennington, but it wasn't dirty. They'll cry about this 2:30 being "offsides" too, but it very much wasn't. Bottom line is that the Avs are the better team, and it shows.
puck was in the air so the blue line ice cam cant see it. The side angle cams have a parallax distortion so it becomes very much a judgement call and they are unlikely to overrule the call on the ice.
No bitching about calls, that game went to the Avs regardless. As I said before, Avs in six. Edit and BTW: congrats to O'Connor on his first NHL playoff goal!!
Kadri lowered his shoulder into Rosen/Binnington. No intent to stop. Full intent to go hard and run the goalie. Take the blinders off, you’re reaching.
Blues fans will cry about Bennington, but it wasn't dirty. I've read them crying about this 2:30 being "offsides" too, but it very much wasn't. It was an incredible play. Bottom line is that the Avs are the better team, and it shows.
I LOVE post like this. So when your team (if it happens) ends up going behind 3 games to 2 or it goes to game 7 and they lose, you will make post with EXCUSES as to why this has happened.
Honestly, the Avs haven’t proved to be the better team. Game 1 was sent to OT, Game 2 the blues win by 3 goals, and Game 3 the Avs win by 3 goals. This is about as matched as you can make it. If regular season Husso decides to show up the Avs are done for.
I'm an English-born Australian Avs fan, have never attended an actual NHL game....but how exciting is Stanley Cup finals hockey?! I mean you can just feel the palpable energy of the crowd's excitement through even video highlights packages, whether your chosen team is home or away....eeeelectric! :D
You can see it at the end of this game , blues are just gassed , goalie or no goalie ....they are having a hard time staying with this aves team just like everyone should...

@@Mr.BonusHole a star goalie vs an d-man? Also same player injured another blues star last year. Then Vegas proved you can only beat injured teams like the preds.
The Blues didn’t challenge it. Which was… I dunno, kinda looked off to me and I’m biased. Didn’t want to get it wrong then be on the PP if it was onside? Berube might be thinking twice
I have no skin in the game on this one just watching highlights because I love the game. Any word as to why it wasn't offside on the first AVS goal? 2:59 you can see AVS player is just barely across the blue line, yet the puck is in the air behind him. (yes I understand camera angles.. was there a 'down the line' angle shown?)
It was a really close call, and that’s mostly because the puck was in the air. Even with a better camera angle, it would still be a 50/50 call. Not nearly a certain enough call to overturn the call on the ice. The STL coach wasn’t certain he’d win the challenge, and decided he didn’t want to give the Avs a powerplay.
@@andrewchapman5659 Yea i know the blue line goes vertically as well. I'd love to see the angle from the blue line camera. Did they show it during the broadcast?
So far the Blues have taken pretty good care of taken Avs stars from the scoreboard but I wonder how long they can do it … I don’t see any intentions by Kadri to hurt binnington…
I'm honestly a little surprised I haven't seen anyone calling for Kadri's head yet. I'm with you though. Kadri making a net drive and got entangled with a defender preventing either from stopping. Unfortunate for the Blues, but it's a "hockey play".

Blues still had chances to score - Thomas HAS to score more as he goes through droughts like reg season yet couldn't beat Darcy who played avg. Avs took advantage of goalie change and idle Husso, who will be better in next game, has to be out farther on first goal. Twists and turns are the p/o's. I'm surprised Binnington left the game after that. You used to see goalies get run down way harder and stay in the game all the time, but maybe I'm just old. Plus I only watched this highlight package so maybe there's something I don't know, like the dude actually managed to stab Binnington with his skate like Happy lol. I dunno, he's always acting tough and I thought this looked like a pretty routine collision. 🤷🏻♂️
I was at this game so not sure what they showed on TV, but after the collision the trainer came out and he skated around a bit then tried to slide post-to-post and his right leg just collapsed under him. It was super hard to watch. Hoping it's just a pulled muscle and nothing worse, but he definitely looked like he was in a lot of pain. :/
You have a 190+ lb defensemen fall directly on your extended knee and see how well you feel after that. Goalies are always so vulnerable when they drop down into the butterfly, it doesn't take much to bend their legs in a direction they were never meant to bend.
I was at the game and I have no idea. They still framed the offsides on the jumbotron. Half expected the fans to break the glass and come for the refs.
It wasn’t. Even the coach didn’t think so because the refs gave him an awful lot of time to review it to see if he was going to challenge it. And Craig didn’t challenge it so even he knew it was onside.
@@lonnysnyder7324 did they show it straight on from the blue line? Because on TV they only showed it from angles where there was no way to tell if it was or not
