Johnny Gaudreau had the game-winning goal, overcoming a 64-save performance from Jake Oettinger as the Calgary Flames defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 in overtime, clinching their first-round playoff series in seven games.
Proving as always, it takes a TEAM to win the Cup. Not rely on just a couple of players. I think the Oilers will find this out in the next round. The "NHL Florida State Playoffs" should be fun to watch because both teams are very well balanced.
As a flames fan. Hats off to ottenger. Best playoff goaltending performance I've ever seen. This was a very lopsided game minus ottie. Kids got a bright future.
100%, and specially this game but but honestly throughout the entire series. It felt like you guys could’ve scored at least 2-3 extra goals per game. If it wasn’t for him, I think Calgary would’ve taken care of business in 5
Was walking my dog after the game. A guy pulled over and asked if the flames won. I said yes in overtime he yelled “woohoo” and drove off honking…I’m in Australia.
I can’t remember a first round this exciting…ever!! What a performance by the Otter man. Youse guys down there in Dallas have a bright future! In the mean time bring on the Battle of Alberto!!! - Gary!
"I can’t remember a first round this exciting…ever".... LOL? are you kidding me? As a non-Flame fan I can tell you there parts of this series that were 'full on yawner'. . Today was betterbut dude... you need to watch more hockey if you think this series was the 'most exciting' first rounder.
@@good2goskee overall you putz!! Not just this series!! Stop talking out of your behind and just enjoy these games pal! Enough of your jawn!! Life is too short to get worked up over something so little. I am sorry your team won’t win the cup this year ha ha ha. - Gary
I don’t normally comment on videos but I was at the Red Lot for this game and the energy was insane! Oettinger definitely put on a show 😅 Well played to him 👏 Excited for Flames vs Oilers 🔥
John and Matthew, R.I.P. Sad day for the hockey world, especially the families. Condolences to all their loved ones. Johnny Hockey, genuine ambassador and role model. Always the bigger man. One of the good guys. Fare thee well.
JOHNNY HOCKEY BABY! 🔥🔥🔥 The handshake between Jacob Markstrom and Jake Oettinger was my favourite moment ever in hockey. Otter is the future, greatest goaltending performance I’ve ever seen in the playoffs.
It was worth watching this series just to watch the Jake Oettinger Show, wow ! With senses heightened and so sharp he could smell the puck coming his way.
Proud of my home team they deserve it, they worked hard for it. Oettinger, you my man, you put up a good fight and deserve all the praise you can get. Dallas, keep this guy for as long as you can, he is absolutely insane. And Johnny Hockey, insane snipe of a goal, outta all the players, he def deserves that last goal. Well done flames! GO FLAMES GO!!
This Calgary team had so much potential still.. I’m still hurt this team fell apart, I swear we were one piece away from sweet Stanley. On the other note rip Johnny hockey.. for some reason I always thought he’d come back just shut us up. Man I miss flames hockey with Johnny leading
I'd have to agree. I've been a fan since 1970 NHL expansion birthed the Canucks. This is the first time I've felt compelled to watch EVERY game of all first round televised series. The only disappointment has been the potential for an 'all Canadian' final disappeared when the Leafs went golfing. Sigh.

That Dallas goaltending is indicative of the ‘19 series against the Blues, which they also lost in a game 7 overtime. Phenomenal. I did not think Dallas would make a series of it. Hats off.
Incredible 🤩🤩🤩 what a Game, what a series. Finally i cant here the name „Oettinger“ annymore and then Johnny puts it home. Such a well deserved win for the Flames. So many chances and so many shots. Great.
I remember taking my dog on a walk on Gm5. Flames were down 0-1, and when I came back, up 2-1. I did it twice tonight. The score was 0-1, and I returned to see 2-2. I left midway through the 3rd period, and I returned to see 3-2 OT.
@@inactiveaccount64f that's an old trick... i needed to switch bars to change the luck... i remember just walking into the new bar and watching my boys score.. different sport, different team... but same result...
I pulled out an autographed 89-90 Fleury card and Flames puck out of storage and put it on my desk right before OT.. Looks like that's staying on my desk for a while!!
Never really felt it was fair to say Johnny Hockey never comes up big in the postseason because a lot of his misses are usually on great saves man; it’s always hats off to fantastic tenders he’s up against. But great for my guy!!!
So glad the Flames took this one! But oh man, did Oettinger make them work for it! First star of the game for sure! If this guy keeps it up, he's going to be a force in the league for years to come! Kudos to the Flames for keeping the pressure on, and not to disregard Markstrom's performance! It was stellar as well. Good luck against the Oilers!
The 1st round usually holds a few surprises but Bowness said- "we aren't going to be anyone's stepping stone to the 2nd round". He's a hell of a coach. Props to the Stars for an amazing series. Sutter said Oettinger was the best player in the series, but also that Calgary deserved the win. Go Flames!
as a FLAMES fan. Oettinger was amazing. 23 years old, 62 saves, 120+ flames shot attempts. Like Markstrom said Oettinger has a BIG FUTURE in the NHL. Great game
Ok, so I'm dating myself, but a young Ken Dryden in '71 stoned Orr, Esposito and the high scoring bruins en route to a Conn Smythe trophy and the Stanley Cup. To top it off, Dryden then won Rookie of the year the following season.
And the kid is freakin’ 23 years old. Flames fans everywhere are acknowledging how brilliant he’s been in this series, but dang, we never want to see him again. 😂
Oettinger went superhero mode in this game, feel bad for the guy, he played his heart out and made it so tough for the Flames to win this game and this series.
This Flames team is just SO freakin' good, and yet they were almost beaten by an All-World goaltending performance from a previously average goalie. Wow. Reminds me of how Jaroslav Halák managed to get the Montréal Canadiens through two series against two of the very best teams of the modern NHL back in 2010. To take a couple examples: in game 6 of the Habs-Capitals series, he saved 53 of 54, while Varlamov was no Markström, saving 18 of 21; and in game 7, Halák saved 41 of 42, while Varlamov only saved 14 of 16, sealing the Caps' fate. Halák came out of nowhere - he had never really shown that he would be anything other than an average NHL goaltender, and at 25 years of age, on a team with a heir apparent in Carey Price, those playoffs really were a make-it-or-break-it moment. And he made it count for all it was worth, guaranteeing that he would have a long NHL career to prove that his exceptional performance in 2010 wasn't a fluke. On that note, Halák managed to be a great starting goalie for 5 of the following 8 seasons* (he was average or injured for the remaining 3), in which he matched (and once exceeded) his exceptional performance that year in Montréal. But success was short-lived, and he never made it back to the Conference Finals, and faded away as a decent back-up goalie. I don't think Oettinger's heroics were a fluke either. But he has certainly come out of nowhere to impress NHL fans league-wide, and I think he's just getting started (hopefully on an even more impressive journey than Halák took). *Including a memorable 12 games with the Washington Capitals (record: 5-4-3, 2.31 GAA, 0.930 SV% and 1 shutout), the very team he had decimated 4 years earlier (he was a trade deadline acquisition from the Blues, but the Caps finished 3 points out of a playoff spot that year despite his excellent play).
As a Calgary fan, Oettinger was the MVP out of both teams. Even though my team won, I have nothing but full respect for his performance. I hope that Dallas can continue to see how you’ll develop as a goaltender.
YES! We get our BoA!!! Despite cheering for the Oilers, I am more so cheering for Alberta. No matter who wins round 2, I'm excited to see what comes after. Calgary is a scary team. Really looking forward to Round 2!
They don't deserve a thanks for anything. From day 1 of preseason it was the same BS. The entire mindset of that team has been a disaster for years. This team should have won the cup the last 3 years.
Wow, the Flames win game 7 and advance to the second round!! This game was so close, and it was nail biting to watch it! I was really afraid the Dallas Stars might end up winning, because Oettinger, their outstanding goaltender, was saving so many shots. And then Gaudreau scores on a difficult, sharp angle shot in overtime to clinch the series!!! Congratulations to the Calgary Flames!!
It's good to finally see the better team win the series. I felt the Pens and Leafs played better than their opponents, but still lost. Hockey is random and in the playoffs anything can happen! Great to see the Flames advance. Now for the Battle of Alberta!
I was certain Calgary was losing this one. Oettinger seemed to be unbeatable, and Dallas was getting some really dangerous chances off of some defensive lapses. Glad I was wrong! What a shot by Gaudreau. It had to be perfect to beat Oettinger - and it was!
Man, it makes me soul leave my body when I see an effort like that from a goaltender get wasted. Oettinger was unreal all series long, and made watching these games a revelation. I'm watching WAY more Dallas games next year.
the stories of Habs and Price. He's young, bright future ahead. Dallas has built a great franchise and team. Yall won 1 in '99 and had 3 finals appearances, its ok you'll manage. plenty of teams have waited +25yrs to win the cup. Since Buttman tookever not 1 canadian team has won in thier own sport to win their own trophy in a league dominated by Canadians, so imagine how Canadians view the game......it would be like the NFL expanding into Mexico and for +25yrs straight ONLY those Mexican teams win the superbowl. Thats what NHL seems like to us, metaphorically.
@@mtlienz2279 I hear you. But I think the pain is much more local than that. Somehow I doubt that the Oilers winning the cup this year, for example, is gonna make anyone in Toronto feel remotely better. As a Blues fan, I never got any comfort at all from knowing the Chicago Blackhawks were winning cups instead of a Canadian team. Frankly, in my experience, the proximity and rivalry makes it WORSE. The only time the national stuff seems to really make a difference is at the Olympics, and whenever those have happened, the Canadian team seems to do just fine.
@@jake8473 its a Canadian sport and trophy. The game evolved and expanded. From a business pov, do the math +380M population vs 40M population; where would the profits be more lucrative. Its just business, and business is about profits and margins making the most while spending the least. As i said, +25yrs we have not won once since Buttman tookover and since he took over, most expansion teams have had great succe$$ (optics). This is not just a coincidence considering every team is largely Canadian players. Life is a rigged game, sports is no different
Man this performance by Oettinger reminded me of Cam Ward’s magical rookie season run to the Stanley Cup. Oettinger nearly stole the series single handedly.
As a leaf fan I would like to congratulate both oliers and flames on making the second and hopefully more than 2 Canadian teams can be past the second round next year, will be cheering for whoever comes out of your series
What a series. And Otter was crazy. Stars did well and still lost, but in a game 7 OT. (Everyone said Flames in 5 and Dallas proved them wrong) Otter is the best goalie in the NHL right now and I can't wait to see him next season. I am proud of the Stars and I hope we use this perfect game 7 loss and hit it hard next season. And hats off to the Flames for a hell of a effort and I will be cheering them on in round 2.
Oettinger must have stole AT LEAST 2 games this series, he was just unreal. If I was a Dallas fan I’d be pretty happy right now despite the elimination. Looks like they found their true #1 franchise goalie.
Jake Oettinger was looking like 2019 Ben Bishop. The Stars offense goes anemic while he stands on his head for more than 60 minutes. At least Dallas has the Mavericks.
I'm sure I'm a little bit biased, but outside of what Belfour and Hasek did in game 6 in 1999, this was the most magnificent performance in goal that I have ever seen. Grats to the Flames for continuing to push and finally punching through. A tough, hard-nosed, hard fought series.
@@sosmiley9009 a 100% healthy monahan would be nice to have in our top 6. he put up crazy stats before he had to get multiple surgeries in the last couple years.
What a game, what a series. Oettinger was unbelievable. The best series of round one, in my opinion. As an Oilers fan we are in deep cow dung against the Flames. The Flames should win " The Battle of Alberta" for the first time. The Flames "Red Machine" attack in waves and our defence with Nurse and Keith have to step up and play better. Cody Ceci and Russell have to continue playing great. And Smith will have to play some of the best games of his life. I hope it goes 7 games
What a shot. What a goal. What a game. What a series. Flames fan and obviously; I'm happy. But MAN.... I am here to sing the unwaivering, well deserved, never to be doubted praises of JAKE. OETTINGER. *UNREAL.* The Dallas Stars have somebody very, Very, VERY, *VERY* special between the pipes. Hats off, brother team. Why brother team? The Cowboy aesthetic, and what is a Star? Just a big ball of buring fire.
