Welcome back NHL Goalie Breakdown’s presented by MAP South Goaltending. This segment is designed for goalies to learn how to think critically and evaluate goalies when watching games and highlights. I encourage you all to comment and direct message in hopes of continuing the conversation in order to help your game. Also, please DM me your recommendations for next week’s post!
This weeks’ segment is on Juuse Saros. Saros is what most people view as “Vertically Challenged”, listed at 5’11. He was able to overcome this stigma by being an elite athlete and using hockey IQ in order to work his way from the AHL to the NHL. This season, he took the starting job away from legend Pekka Rinne and helped the Predators into a playoff position at the time of the NHL freeze.
We will focus on his technical and tactical game with it broken down into different scenarios: Line Rush and In-Zone. And how this has lead him to a solid 17-12-4 record, with a 2.70 GAA and 0.914 Sv% on a team that gives up a number of high danger scoring opportunities (10.94 per game, source: Natural Stat Trick).

I’m a small goalie so this was very helpful. Now all I need to do is get faster reaction time, much better flexibility, new genetics, strength, better hand eye, better positioning and better skating. Easy

Right 😂 I’m a goalie coach and I’m only 5’8 so when I get smaller goalies they often say they wanna play like Sarros and I’m like kid there’s aspects of his game every small goalie should incorporate but only Sarros can play just like Sarros

5’9” goalie & preds fan. This guy coming into the league as I trained to be a goalie was so, so massive for me. I was also a soccer goalie at the time and it just was so special to see him do what he does. I always had to play above my size while coaches told me I was “too short” and then became surprised when I actually showed them what I could do

5’9” goalie here . I love Saros’ playing style . A couple of things definitely brought to light here in my own game . Keeping fingers above the wrist , not going down into RVH early when there is no shot threat, and beating he pass on your feet. Among a few other things , this gave me some pointers to keep in mind next time .

Correct, and now Saros is nr one at the Preds and litteraly is half the team. Love to see Saros in another team soon. The thing only goalies seems to understand, is that Saros is not on the highlight reels of the week. Because that is panic saves going well. Saros rarely comes to the panic swimming mode because he is sooo composed. As MAP says, he makes it look easy (where a lot of the leagues goalies would have been scored on). Great vid keep thanks.

@@michaelmansouri9084 Are you a tennis fan first and happen to catch the odd Preds game by accident? Is that where your "easily" opinion came from? Because it sure is shit not factually and statstically correct about Pekka. Its going on 2 straight seasons in row that Old Man Pekka is the bench warmer... easily the bench warmer.

Loved the video! Great analysis. On the Fowler goal though, I think the puck changed direction off his D-man’s stick giving it a rizing trajectory which could explain why his glove went down and then up

awesome video man, but the goal that you included I personally feel like it was not exactly Saros's fault because you can see that the shot was tipped from one of the Nashville players. I think you made a very good point about how there isn't time for a secondary movement and I completely agree since I struggle with that myself but I also feel like it is a little bit of an unfair judgement of that particular situation.

And when it comes to second analysed goal vs Habs, the problem maybe wasn´t post to post tracking, he does it very well. He made the mistake that he didn´t see the player who scored in the final because Saros (and defense of course) looked only at the player behind the net and other two habs on his left side. Of course it was very difficult, chaotic and fast. Deficient view of the situation before the net was problem even against the Minnesota. When I´m in the net, I prefer to stand widely on feet in wide squat. Maybe Saros means different and prefer to kneeling (and we see that he was almost perfectly on the right place on the right time). But I think he was surprised that the Wilder is so near in front of him and it´s miracle he was there so fast. But I agree, interesting video and perfect goalie, thanks.

Fantastic analysis. I'm not sure if it's a weakness or not since I'm just a fan, but one thing I've noticed is that Saros has a tendency to duck when pucks are coming near his head. I know that's a natural self-preservation tendency and probably very difficult to control, but it's just something quite noticeable with him. Saros is so much fun to watch. I do worry about his ability to stick long-term because as soon as an injury or age affects his cat-like quickness, that might be the end of the NHL for him.

Wait when did he steal the spot from Rinne? I’ve watched the Preds since they started and Saros isn’t our future so would love to hear how he replaced Rinne
@mapsouthgoaltending9553
@mapsouthgoaltending9553 3 года назад
This post was done at the end of last season when Saros played every game of their play-in series. He also played a couple more games and had substantially better numbers during last season. Also, he has identical career numbers to Rinne (albeit in a much smaller sample size) and I'd say Rinne has had a pretty incredible career as a franchise cornerstone. This video was no slight to him, it was just fun to evaluate a goalie who has a lot of relatable skills due in part to the fact he is 5'10. So it may have been a bit premature to call him the future, particularly when they ended up drafting Askarov, who I think is a fantastic athlete. Not many 19 year olds come into the NHL ready ready to start so it could be good competition between Askaov and whoever is they plan on having him compete with. This is assuming he comes over, he is under contract in the KHL for next year. Probably a good assumption it won't be until 2022. But their net is in good hand with their pipeline. Not to mention a former teammate of mine, Conor Ingram who was recently and AHL all-star and a great goalie in his own right. You should be pumped for their goaltending future!

@@No_Fear_33 Agreed. Mansouri is a Askarov fanboy. Juuse Saros was even a better talent than Askarov when playing his WJC´s. Just look at his numbers. Saros and Teräväinen basically won the 13/14 WJC´s for the Finns. I pretty Michael Mansouri has not even seen Askarov play in KHL or WJC.
