By mid 60’s early 70’s most had atleast a face mask helmet. Also (and by NO means am I meaning to take away from the craziness of the early goaltending), but most of them played stand up and sticks were flat with no curve so shots rarely got a foot off the ice without being deflected
People are always like how did goalies used to play without helmets but the thing was back then the players couldn’t even lift the puck up so it wasn’t a problem 😂
@@ogdentaylor7473 They did but it wasn't very often. Sticks back then didn't have curves on them and even when they did start to have a curve it wasn't like they were now. In addition players didn't shoot nearly as hard. But yeah even when one did go airborne it wouldn't feel good regardless of of the speed.
If the strap comes undone the helmet safety is nearly entirely compromised. It is very difficult for a ref to see a loose strap, less so a missing helmet, which is why you see most shake it off when the straps are undone
Before this league got soft and goalies decided it’s “dangerous” to play without a mask and they need to be protected from “blunt force trauma” (whatever that is) every save used to be a mask less save
