Gretzky was a horrendous coach. I worked for the coyotes during his tenure. The only cool thing about his coaching tenure was him letting some of us employees take home free sticks. And he didn’t quit on his site btw. He didn’t post that till a day after. He quit on the first day of training camp that season when all the players were skating around warming up and word got out “where the Fuck is gretz?” Finally he was spotted….at a diamondbacks game across town wearing shades and a baseball cap pulled low hiding. The man signed himself to an 8 million a year contract. And bailed on the team because he was a garbage ass coach

7:38 from an Avs fan Roy's first season as our coach was so much fun, but his coaching style and the brand of hockey he wanted the Avs to play was never built to last in a league with speed and offense becoming main staples in it's DNA. But I should still be thankful, if it wasn't for him resigning 2 weeks before the 16-17 NHL season beginning the Avs never would have hired Jared Bednar who's 1 Win away from Winning the Stanley Cup with the Avs.

I wonder what Gretzky could have done on a better team. My family had season tickets for Vancouver at the time and I got to see a lot of games vs. Phoenix and Gretzky was one of the most animated coaches I could remember. Constantly moving, jumping, yelling.
@auckland18

Tough to say but keep in mind the Coyotes missed the playoffs every year he coached them and when Dave Tippet took over, they went 50-25 with 7 OTL and made the playoffs the first three years with him - including a Conference Final appearance. A lot of players complained that under Gretzky, they were constantly changing systems.

I’m super mad about the whole Bruce Cassidy being acquired by Vegas as a Bruins fan. He got fired for low success rates in the Stanley Cup and while I understand that I still think that he was a good coach. He just needed to train our players to do better in playoffs, specifically G7s. But unfortunately he got canned. I also think that we got the short end of the stick with the whole Rick Nash Deal back in 2018. Rick Nash was a really good player and then we lost him the next season. And guess who made it to the Stanley cup finals that year when he retired? Boston. Who knows? Maybe we could’ve stood a better chance in that finals if we had still had him. I think that Cassidy wasn’t offered a complete chance to prove what he could do.

Regardless of sport, hockey, basketball, football, soccer, boxing etc-etc, there are a lot of great players/athletes that had great careers playing the game itself, but proven afterwards not up to par as coaches/trainers and the reasons for that could be many, but the more obvious are related to the actual skill itself. They came more or less naturally to them, and with time practice of the art they became stars in there respective sport. That don't always equal to necessarily have the ability to understand what certain players/athletes need and what combinations to there gameplan works best. Often major stars never really understood the game outside of themselves and because of that, they worked on self-relience and reliance to compatile teammates, but not much further. Most of the greatest coaches we have seen in various sports did not came themselves from a "Hall of Fame" career and more related to a mediocre one or not so impressive. A lot of that reason put those individuals into a different position where they discovers about themselves that while they do not themselves did not have that extra in them to sucseed further as player in the game, they discover new aspects and continue with that to develop higher understanding of the actual game/sport and how that knowledge can be treansfered to practical reality - They had to learn and hone their skills in a new and different way then before. And with that, comes ways of teaching/instructing those skills.

I guess coaching wasn't Gretzky's forte. This is the first ever video I've watched hearing Gretzky's name in the infamy column 😂. Best player ever nevertheless. Gretzky's replacement Tippett is quite interesting though. Tippett was very succesful with that magical cenference final run, where he DID in fact win a Jack Adams, but afterwards things fell apart for him in Arizona and Edmonton (missing out of the playoffs in 5 straight seasons with the Yotes). He was decent for the first half of the first season with Edmonton, but still couldn't get past the 1st round with McDavid on the team :/ He was also known for throwing Koskinen under the bus and wouldn't credit him enough when he was playing well.

it's that way in all sports. great players just don't make great coaches. gretz, magic, ted williams, van brocklin, bart starr, patrick roy. things come easy to them thru natural talent. or they don't have the tempermant for the job-to put up with mistakes that they would never make by lesser players. the best coaches are the bench warmers/back-ups/bottom line guys and guys who have to fight to earn their spot on a team doing whatever it takes to make it. they see things from a different perspective and it gives them an astuteness to be coach/manager. most of those same greats fail as gm's as well. sakic/yzerman seem to be exceptions. and boom boom geffrion coached the expansion atlanta flames and had mixed results as nhl coach. and does anyone remember the disasterous phil esposito era as ranger gm and coach? lost in first round both years as coach never finishing higher then third place in patrick division. and as gm i believe he once traded his first round pick to nords for their coach, michel bergeron. espo was called trader phil for a reason. he once made more trades in a three year span then the van. canucks did in all of the '80's. he made mike milbury look sane.

They didn't have a lot of good players in their top 4 on defense or in the top 9. The team wasn't great, the men I mentioned were great players, Jack Stewart was past his prime, he was the only other great player for the Hawks that year. I agree he didn't match the 43 victory, but he wasn't a bad coach as far as I'm concerned.

I use a perfect example of Mike Babcock. Won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings an Olympic gold medal and so on and so on. Got hired as the Maple Leafs coach and they choked miserably. Just like Toronto again this year probably going to fire their coach and keep the same shity team that's going to get knocked out in the first round. Mind-blowing
