@@jonokiller honestly I think the end result of motte’s stick hitting the face would’ve been the same even with a tighter grip. Just look at how hard and how high Lyubushkin brings his stick up-it’s literally above head height. There’s a reason Motte’s stick was able to bounce as high as it did once it was knocked loose. The other key thing that needs to be noted-Motte’s not attempting to play the puck at that point. He’s on the move and holding the stick 1-handed. That’s the reason grip strength wouldn’t change the result, even if he keeps the stick in his hand the sheer velocity in Lyubushkin’s stick lift still sends it careening upwards.
The funny thing is a similar thing happened the day after against the Islanders where JT miller got a penalty for getting slew footed and his stick when he falls down hits someone in the face. Jt miller somehow got the extra 2 min which changed the momentum in the game.
"This Washington Capitals fan returned a mistaken delivery of gloves, so the Washington Capitals thanked them with a Tom Wilson bobblehead" is a headline straight out of ClickHole.
3:45 the announcers made me mad at this point. Jon Hamm put up a 19, not because Pietrangelo is "a popular guy in Vegas", but because Jon Hamm is a Saint Louis Blues fan, and Pietrangelo was the first Blues captain in history to raise the Stanley Cup.... in 2019.
Yeah its funny to me that they overlooked that. He was doing things like that with all his scoring. Hence the football goal being a "7" because thats how many points is awarded. his words not mine lol
Little known rule, 91.03. "In the case of any on-ice shenanigans involving players not named Nazem Kadri, if Nazem Kadri is within 100' of said shenanigans, a game misconduct will be called on Nazem Kadri". 91.03.01 "Rule 91.03 does not apply to Brad Marchand"
He was pretty quiet when Chara made Pacioretty break his face in a section of the glass that had a sharp corner in a game between Montreal and Boston back before those corners were rounded, yet he was livid in another game between those same two teams where he thought Montreal was trying to draw a penalty or the time he thought Montreal should have been given a penalty on the play. Those can be found in sports compilation videos, like announcers/commentators getting angry (they say announcers but I think the correct term is commentators. Announcers are the people who announce goals, penalties, last minute of play and things like that.)
@@SleepLess_Plays People talk about Jack Edwards as if he invented being a "homer" broadcaster. As a Bruins fan, I think he's simply annoying in general.
I'm not even mad about the penalty on Motte. It was hilarious. But I agree. The first 15 games the reffing was awful. Then the next 25 games the reffing was pretty good for the most part in the Canucks games. Then the last 5 or so it's back to god awful again. Another possible dang it was Miller getting tripped but he takes a double minor high sticking penalty while falling causing the Canucks to be on the PK against the Isles. Like yah, it's the letter of the law, but that just seems like such a cheap and BS penalty.
you're comment about Backstrom's gloves. Arlington is where the Capitals practice, so they are in the same state. Still giving them a bobble head is a slap in the face.
@@SteveDangle Same city, in fact. Their practice facility is in Arlington. Still, a bobblehead is like a middle finger. At least give the fan one of Backstrom's game-worn gloves, signed. That costs the team literally nothing.
To make the bobblehead story even worse: the Caps were supposed to give those out during the 2020 season in March. They gave that guy two-year old tat.
I agree 100% on the all-star game. Zegras pulled off a goal that borderlined on sorcery, and he lost to a guy who did effectively nothing. And I couldn't believe when they stopped the game to review the offside. Like really? Are we pretending this is a serious game now?
See, I'm fine with marchy being suspended, but it should've been like 3-4 games. Getting suspended longer than a guy who literally tried to eat someone else shows some severe inconsistency in player safety
I think the suspension was more for the spearing Jarry to the face more then the punch. And really he has been pulling this stuff at the end of games for a while now, so he deserves it. Plus if your going to go back on penalties, look at the Caps and Blue jackets game. Blue Jackets should have never had a PP to get the third goal.
"So he deserves it." I kind of agree but since NHL never gives proper suspensions, this is too big. Tom Wilson trying to smash two Rangers players head into the ice wasn't even a suspension last season.
@@c0zmo87 the nhl has kind of been a joke on suspensions. Yeah I am Caps fan and that Wilson one one was bad. But Wilson has been a good boy lately, a few of the other Caps player have had more suspensions then him this year. Hell the Sabers Dell one only 3 games and he broke the guys foot, and that want the first time he has hit a player.
This is exactly what I was thinking listening to that segment. Punching in the head I felt had little to do with the suspension. Happens all the time. Spearing is a more severe penalty. Spearing to the face of a player, masked or not, is an even more severe penalty. And after a dead whistle while being directed by an official just adds to it. Without the spearing, it's no more than a roughing penalty at most.
@@manaze85 yup that was my thoughts as well, and that he has been suspended before for dangerous actions in the past is what may have lead to the number of games.
I think with the Marchand thing it was such a bad suspension because A. it's a goalie, and B. the fact that he attempted to spear Jarry in the freaking throat, and C. it's Marchand, the dude is dirtier than a sewage treatment plant.
@@connorcowan6697 So that means the biggest douchebag on the Bruins should be allowed to spear them in the face? Arguably the most important player on a team? Sorry, bad take dude
Have you been to a sewage treatment plant? I have, and I can confirm, they are pretty clean... same level of cleansliness as old hockey arenas (before they are renovated).
Totally expected that the Canucks will receive a double-feature on dang-its this week 😂 Also.... wow... the Caps really did that person dirty.... out of all rhe things to give them... they really gave him a Tom Wilson bobblehead??? At least give them lower bowl tickets to an upcoming game with food and drinks covered...
What I'm hoping will happen is the Caps will have Backstrom use a pair of the misdelivered gloves in a game, sign them, and give the signed game-used gloves the fan helped deliver to the fan. That'd be the best path.
15:13 at least since October 14th 2021, when Dylan Larkin was suspended one game (plus the majority of the game he was thrown out of) for punching Mathieu Joseph in the head after Joseph boarded him. Sure, Larkin’s punch was to Joseph’s face as opposed to Marchand’s to the side of Jarry’s head, and Larkin got a Game and change compared to Marchand’s six. But the key differences are Larkin didn’t high stick Joseph while being escorted off by the refs, and *he hadn’t only played 24 games since his last multi-game suspension.* Marchand 100% deserved this suspension
I feel like Marchand only would have got a game if it was just a punch, considering it was on a goalie with 20 seconds left in a lost game. The stick to the face is what did him in there methinks.
Marchand wasn't suspended for the punch, it was for the high stick (that's aggravated assault, brotha), and it was 6 games cause he's a repeat offender... Nazem Kadri says hello.
I don’t comment on RU-vid ever but for Steve and the dangle army I will! Gotta love how fun he makes his videos and how much passion he has for the game and how much effort the entire SPDN team puts into their videos just for us hockey hungry fans 😂 Steve, Adam, Jesse , the rest of the team and their supportive families I think I speak for all of us when I say. THANK YOU 🙏
Officials need to realize that for all their attempts to "not influence the game", you can still influence the game just as much by _not_ penalizing something as you can by calling a penalty.
If the next game between Pittsburgh and Boston is during the 6 games Marchand got, they should suspend the suspension for that game and force Marchand to play it. You know the next time these two teams meet there's going to be some fire on the ice. Yea, the league handled it, but it was the goalie, and that makes it different.
"He won without even scoring a goal." And this is why the dunk-contest-style breakaway challenge based on judging is dumb. Also, if you're putting up prize money to the team that wins, you can bet they'll ask for reviews.
I think had Marchand stopped at just punching Jarry, he'd not have been suspended. The stick to the face was where I believe the suspension is needed, and I'm a Bruins fan.
These weekly videos are good fun. I think if Marchand had stopped at the Punch he might have gotten a game or fine. The stick to face mask/throat protector is "a line too far". You have to penalize something like that. Given that Marchand has been suspended and fined so many times the 6 games doesn't seem too out of wack. I would hope that they would give a game or two for behavior like that in the playoffs but who knows if they would.
LOL! Had my own mini steve moment while watching the game and they reviewed offside TWICE! One of the announcers mentioned just getting rid of the blue lines for the all star game. Im in, but they shudnt have to!
Regarding Marchand, it's also a dang-it that Jarry was not called for a slash on Charlie Coyle just a few seconds before. I'm not defending Marchand, because he deserved to be suspended, but we should at least discuss why he was upset.
I'm glad they suspended Brad and hope they keep that. Two guys fighting I'm cool with. Sucker punching someone in the back of the head, not so much. Spearing someone in the face while a ref is escorting you away, not cool with that either. Honestly, though, I think that's what did it. The ref probably said "go or else" and Marchant said "or else what"...and then found out.
He's a spoiled brat that has had everything handed to him his entire life and it shows in his behavior on and off the ice. I'd like to see his weasel-ass suit up back in the 70s. He'd run from the ice and never look back after a few minutes if he could still walk.
I think the reason punching a goalie is a more suspendible offense than punching other players is because legally other players are allowed to fight back. According to the rulebook a goalie leaving the crease durring an altercation without permission from a referee is a penalty and if the altercation is in the crease he has to go to an area designated by the referee. Edit: I know fighting is a penalty but with all the restrictions for goalies they seem to, as a result, also be more protected from fights.
The biggest Dang-it is that only one penguin (Letang) was trying to defend the goalie. Crosby was almost patting Marchand on the back afterwards. Even the slash afterwards, Rust just watched him skate away. Like defend your goalie, jeez.
Literally the fact that Marchand got suspended 6 games for that…and Tom Wilson got NOTHING for what he did to Buchnevich ANNNNND Panarin?!?! It’s absolutely insane. Actually.
As for Marchand I think you're right on so many levels. I think its player safety having a "change of heart". I dont think its specifically about the punch but the fact that it was a cheap shot to the head PLUS the additional intentional hit with the stick to the head. It was a intentional, dirty and intent to cause harm to a goalies head. I'm curious as to why Sean Avery was shunned(which he should be) but Marchand has done way more plus worse yet he's still playing in the NHL? What is the difference?
The reason touching the goalie is more severe than touching any other player is the same reason you thought Marchand wouldn’t get suspended. Precedent. Both penalties and suspensions have been far more severe for actions against goalies.
they were supposed to be given out at like one of the first games postponed in 2020 and then a million years later or possibly two when they announced they were gonna try again everyone lost their goddamn minds
I've seen the following high sticking calls before: - A player shooting the puck in to their opponent's face - An opponent getting hit in the face by their own teammate's stick - A player lifting an opponent's stick in to their own face and the opponent getting a penalty Yet, I have never seen THAT before. Oh, poor Tyler Motte...
Good call on the Backstrom gloves stuff. Hope they do the right thing by the fans. I bet the players would. Hell. Larkin bought a fan a beer. (Was that a hat-pick? It should've been if not.)
I've seen a few high-sticking calls where the stick that hit a player was actually either the player's own stick, or one of his teammates' and not the person who got the penalty called against him, but I've never seen a high-sticking call against a guy who did not even have a stick in his hands at the time.
You could have challenges in an All-Star game, but make it in a funny way! - Coaches are invisible in these games so let them have their moment: challenging the referee to a boxing match in the center ice, or let them perform some task to win the challenge - just make something silly and make fun of the whole challenge system! (and each coach would actually have to challenge once in a game)
Looking at the Marchand suspension wrong. 2 minutes for roughing (the punch) and a match for intent to injury (the spear). So ranting about would he get a suspension for punching in the playoffs is moot. He didn't get suspended for it here either. It was the spear go the head which wasn't in the heat of the moment but rather a deliberate attempt to injury Jarry.
Sucker punches are generally different than in fights and stuff like that. You then add in the spear, the fact it was against a goalie, and his previous history, then the suspension makes sense.
Hey Steve just wanna let you know how far your influence goes I was playing my men`s league on the weekend, and we chipped the puck in to the corner. Goalie came out to play it, missed it, I grab it throw out front, goalie was able to scramble and get back to stop the puck and grab a whistle. I`m skating to the faceoff and I say to the goalie `Dude, if you`re a goaltender....` He screams ``TEND THE GOAL!!!`before I finish. We had a good laugh.
Why do we "care" about the integrity of the game during the ASG but not during a skill competition? MONEY The players get a bonus for winning the ASG and you can bet on the game, too. While you could wager on some of the skill contests, the shootout challenge was not one of those. I'm not agreeing with it, but I'm just saying when the results have financial implications, it'll be treated differently.
Ya can’t forget that the canucks dang it is compounded by the fact that it could have been 3 goals in sub 30 seconds if there wasn’t a fight mixed in the sequence
I would have suspended him an additional two games after his comments about his suspension. 6 games for Marchant is light. He touched the goalie twice. The melee that could have set off is incredible.
I was really thinking Patrick Liane missing the hat trick on an open net by clinging it off both posts would have made the list, but apparently I was wrong lol
You can't fight 12x in a single game only up to 3. A player who commits three major penalties (including fighting) during a game is automatically ejected, suspended, and fined.
I think hooking someone's stick so hard it flies up out of their hands (and often times up in the air about 15-20 feet) should be an interference penalty. Such a cheap way to take someone out of the play imo
They've been suspending people for sucker punches a lot, and that's exactly what Marchand did. If Dylan Larkin gets 1 game for punching Joseph after getting boarded (who has no history) Marchand got exactly, if not less than he deserves with his history. If it would have been a mutual fight, sure, no suspensions for anyone, but he got butt hurt after a save was made and they were losing, it does look like Jarry said something to him, but who cares? However, I agree with your playoff analysis of the suspension.
He was suspended for roughing, punching someone when not in a fight is roughing... You can't do that. Rinaldo was suspended 6 games for sucker punching a player a few years ago. You want the precedent? there you go!
I played a tourney at the Pepsi Center in Denver as a kid and found Phoenix Coyote's goalie Sean Burke's helmet in my stall, and decided it was best to give it to an employee when I left.... wish I kept it a day or two to see him wear a backup helmet and feel like a part of NHL history, instead felt like being a good guy. Not worth it would not recommend 0/10
In response to your “why is it a suspension for hitting a goalie in the head, why?” question, use your Sports Net Jedi connections and reach out to Jeff Marek of the Jeff Marek show, or Elliotte Friedman (32 thoughts) who was the guest on the show who talked specifically why hitting a goalie will get anyone a guaranteed suspension compared to a head hit on another player. Or go to SN 960/Jeff Marek show/Marek & Friedman: Meltdown in Montreal (February 9 2022 broadcast, fast forward to the 8:00 minute mark and it has to do with Lucic when he ran over Ryan Miller and this hit was brought up at the next NHL GM meeting)
Steve im with you on the punch to the head. Its the high stick to Tristan that is getting him in trouble. You know the old adage in hockey; its the retaliations that gets you in trouble, the first hit never gets notice but the second one gets you a penalty, or in this case suspension. Just not sure why you're not acknowledging this. Love your work keep it up!
NHL Player Safety probably decided the consequence when a punch was thrown at an unsuspecting player. Marchand threw a punch at a person who was not aware that it was coming. And looking at the official NHL rules " (NEW for 2005-06) (NOTE 3) Automatic suspensions will be assessed to players who are deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at any time in overtime". Looks like Marchand instigated it in the final 5 minutes.
That is spot on re the Caps. When I read that RMNB story I said you gotta be kidding....a bobblehead!?!? For returning a box of Nicky's gloves?? What cheapskates!!
