I went to the U.S Nationals with my automotive class in high school a few times and it's still to this day probably one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. I hope to make a trip back one day.
@@chrissmith6267 go to NHRA Top Fuel ASAP. It's on the elites chopping block so it may not be around for long. I ten thousand percent guarantee you'll have an absolute great time.
I remember 20 years ago in vacation at Texas my father told John Force we came from Germany just to see him (father was a big fan of him) he immediately took my through his entire trucks and Setup and stuffed me full with merch. Didn’t understand a word at that time but that was and is still amazing and makes me smile and I tell everybody here in Germany how cool racing in the US is.
You have never heard sound until you hear these beasts in person. I highly recommend everyone go watch them at least once in their lifetime. It's impossible to explain how loud they are with words alone.
It’s literally one of the best experiences I’ve ever had growing up as a kid going to watch top fuel and funny car races! But like you said words can’t explain the sound and how loud they really are in person!
Nope, words don't work. Loud definitely doesn't do it. LOL It's like the atmosphere and time itself is being compressed as soon at the lights go green and they blast down the track. It's hard to breath in the stands! My favorite is when they are in the pits running the engine with the wheels in the air and just BLIP the throttle. It's like artillery going off! "mmmmmm *BRAAAAP!* bupbupmmmmmm" as people and crowd literally jump 3-4 feet away like a wind blast on tall grass. LOL
Until you go to one of these in person, it’s impossible to explain how this is. It’s not about how loud it is, it’s about how it feels. The pressure from these cars are unexplainable. I haven’t gone since they went down to a stupid 1000ft racing, but it’s still amazing.
My first time going to nhra was in the mid 90’s with my dad. He hadn’t been to one since the 70’s and I remember him telling me how they got so much louder and the feeling intensified. I brought my daughter to one a couple years ago now because they are something outta this world. You are right, you just can’t explain it.
I remember hearing the first NHRA noise when I was in the parking lot before they started racing. I was charging my phone in the car and all you heard was the drag car and the vibrations were huge. It’s one of the most greatest noises a car can make. It was a great experience. Thanks for showing more of how a drag race is done. This was so cool.
It's the best advertising they could.have possibly done. I think they've realized they are losing desperately to the internet people and holding so tightly on to the copyright and tv dollars. Tv dollars is pretty insane but not what it used to be. (The 90s) As more people gravitate towards both the internet and smaller more homebrew style racing both respectively.
The biggest thing is that they knew you when you first started out and they see how far you have come thanks for bringing us the content that you have done for years and years to come and not going mainstream
Seeing your perspective from a NHRA race is awesome! They really are on another level compared to any other Racing Organization (whatever you call it) out there. Hope this means you guys can film more NHRA in the future! Those dragsters are otherworldly in person. Cameras don't do them justice!
when he said it's just a different way of going dragracing , i couldn't agree more. i also hope they'd get permission for let's say a few events each year . i can only see benefits for nhra and 1320 .
I remember as a kid in the early/mid-90’s there being what had to have been over 100k people in the stands. It’s crazy to see so few people in the grandstands during eliminations. These are great events. The teams are super friendly and open to everyone, answer questions, take pics, you name it. No other series is as fan friendly as NHRA. If you’ve never been I would strongly recommend it. Great video.
In N Out flexin hard at the end 💪. They hands down have one of the cleanest, nicest looking private fleets in the country. Their rigs and trailers are top notch always.
Back in 1975, I went to the Top Fuel drags at Sanair Raceway near Montreal. Big Daddy Don Garlits was racing. It was the loudest thing I've ever heard, shook me to the bone.
This was a great video Kyle! I’ve worked behind the scenes on TV / film sets and live studios and it’s always amazing to see the rush behind the scenes as things are going live. Something I didn’t realise until working on these sort of things was the importance of a floor manager and what they actually did. I’ve also always been fascinated by the teams that run replays and arrange it all so quick. So happy you guys got this access finally too, what a great experience.
They use a steering brake setup for the rear wheels, you can brake each rear wheel individually and they usually have a hole in the floorboard that they can look out and see where they are going
Agree, he is super talented and has earned his success. I first heard him in the early days of announcing the Hot Rod Drag Weeks with David Friesandaburger.
Watching these cars in person for the first time last year was insane. Completely changed my perception on nhra drag racing. Like they said in the video, and what everyone in the comments are saying, you have to be there to experience how gnarly these top fuel cars are. Me and my car club got invited to have a show there and watch the races (they get invited every year, I was a new member) and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I would recommend anyone go and experience these cars at least once. It’s insane and well worth the experience.
One of the best videos yet. I am an old drag racer from the late 60s early 70s. To see the advancements made is really awesome. I wish we had some of the camera gear back then. I have some still pics taken that show the old pit setups at Connecticut Dragway. Miss those days.
I like watching top fuel from down track. the delay between the sight of the exhaust shooting up and the sound followed by the Doppler effect as they pass is my favorite way to experience them.
The fact you were finally able to do some recording at an NHRA event is epic, let alone the detailed behind the scenes look. Appreciate all that you guys do for the racing community.
Answer: YES! I love seeing 1st timers experience top fuel. You guys had a great first time experience as well! It was Fred at the lights with his mouth open shaking his head afterwards...literally saying there were no words. LOL
Lanny is THE track Encyclopedias Britannica! Im just shy of 50 and I have been watching Lanny work for a large portion of that. For ME, he is a highlight of every race I've been to. Just to sit and listen to him like that was incredible. Thank you for sharing your time with him.
Genuinely surprised you guys have never been to a NHRA fuel event. I’m a amateur road racer - about as far from this level of the NHRA as possible, and I love going to these things. The level of insanity is almost beyond comprehension. Thanks for the video, and bring us more like it.
I grew up in between Napa and Vallejo CA. 12 miles as a crow flyings from Sonoma raceway. We could hear the top fuel cars make a pass from our backyard
Thank you so much for this I haven’t been to an NHR a check in 25 years end it has become so much more advanced than I ever thought. Thank you thank you thank you
Thank you 1320, this video, even as short in duration as it is ha to be just about the MOST COMPREHENSIVE video I have EVER SEEN and believe me I have been enjoying drag racing since the early 1960's (I'm 75). For a fan who has little idea of what the sport at the highest levels is about this video touches on most aspects. For the fan (like myself) it give us a visit behind the scenes most will never have the opportunity to see. Thank you for all you have done for the sport of drag racing at every level, for all that you do now and for all 1320Video will be doing in the future. Happy 2022!
This video was epic! I grew up going NHRA drag races as a kid in the early 90s and absolutely loved it. It's amazing to see how far technology has come. John Force was always one of my favorite with his Castrol GTX funny car and even Big Daddy Don garlits was still doing exhibition runs. I can't believe some of these people are still racing that I watched as a kid. Thank you so much for your coverage of this event. It really makes me want to start going again and take my nephew
This is brilliant. Coming from England where i dont think drag racing has ever been on national TV. It's amazing to see what you get in America. Brilliant.
Incredible video guys. As a German drag racing fan I have one question I noticed on the NitrolympX here in Germany and in some videos from all over the world. In the past when they rebuild the top fuelers they did one or two throttle hits. If I'm informed correctly they did it to settle the clutch. But some years ago they did stop doing this. Why did they stop? It was so great when the nitro hammer smashed right into your face. Hope someone can answer my question. Happy new year to all & cheers.
Probably new tech where either they don't have to bed it, or maybe it's pre-bedded before they get their hands on it, these engines run right on the edge and these engines can grenade themselves literally on startup.
What a great behind the scenes video! If you have any interest in motor sports, you MUST attend at least one of these national events. You will remember it for life.
The Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters are insane to watch launch. The tree goes, then you just see these huge flames from the cars and silence then a split second later, they're MOVING and it's this barrage of noise. Got to love the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound.
it is awesome you all show the behind the scenes of the nhra i have been to heartland park it is off the chain how fast they go it is awesome to see them run
It's all mega money and technology. Amazing the data that is collected and used. No room for little guys to compete. Super coverage of the event behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing.
I love me some cacklefest! Grew up in the 80s and 90s watching some super cool old dragsters out there revving their nitro hemis. Crazy 2 engine all wheel drive cars from Tommy Ivo and Don Prudomes early cars and you name it. I’m glad they still do that for the kids to appreciate!
Awesome behind the scenes look at the NHRA. I've been going to the NHRA for years and have made a few videos for my channel ... I can't wait until racing season starts !!
Went to my first NHRA event with my dad, wife, brother, and sister in law at Atlanta Dragway which no longer exists. I'll remember that experience and the looks on our faces forever. I've been around drag racing my entire life and nothing comes close to the feeling you get when two top fuel cars go flying by at 300+mph.
I haven't been to an NHRA Top Fuel event in decades. Even so, Top Fuel RULES!! In my much younger days my weekends were spent at OCIR, Riverside, or Pomona when ever the "Thunder" rolled in to SoCal. Back then horsepower was peaking at around 3,500. Now? OMG! How much more does Mother Earth shake, rattle and roll when of these machines are pitted against each other on the "strip"? Back in the day it was EPIC!! How can one describe it now? You're giving me the "itch" to attend one of these again.
We dont get NHRA TV down in Australia - thankyou 1320 for bringing ALL the fun to us. I like the personal contact you fellas have with racers. Happy New Year all.
I go to both races in Pomona every year, I recommend people to go at least once. The friends I've introduced to the sport have turned into huge fans. Lots of actions, good food, good beer, and great times. My kids all go too and they love it.
Standing about 50 feet back off the wall and about at the 330' mark I experienced what is known as "Temporary Threshold Shift" as a pair of NHRA top fuel cars roared by. You're actually deaf as they go by. I could feel my insides vibrate so much it made my vision go all weird. One of the coolest experiences ever when it comes to racing.
I went to my first NHRA race in Atlanta this year. It was super awesome! Got to talk to Clay Millican he’s a super cool dude. They are loud! They rumble your whole body.
Thanks Kyle and the team for this new content -good to have more auto variety. Been into hot rods and drag racing all my life but the first time I went to the U.S. Nationals Indy back in early 90's....WOW, nothin' but WOW!!!
I remember watching the outlaw nitro funny cars down here in Adelaide Australia about 8 years ago so much fun to watch especially the jet powered drag cars thats something else 👌
This is an amazing video! Thank you for this!! This is amazing. As a fan as an critical eye and podcast host about the sport I love, I thank you for this!
That was awesome. You are right, we had no clue how much was involved in a full scale TV sports program. All for about 4 seconds of a show for a driver.
I sat front row at the staring line for top fuel once. I heard the roar for a split second, and after that I stopped hearing the sound and I could only feel the vibrations on my forehead. It was awesome.
Only the NHRA would open up like this to a channel like 1320. My mom worked for a team a few years a decade ago. Small tight knit community of competitors and production as shown by this video. 3 secs to 300+ is a thrill every time.
That was a kick ass video. That was very cool of NHRA to let you film there and all the track people to let you go into the trailers this was a cool video. Thanks.
