With my wife Dace we continued touring this side of the map and arrived in Serbia, the epicenter of the old Yugoslavia with its strong Slavic culture. We are going to walk through its streets trying to perceive its way of life to share it with you.
In few places in the world can you see so much beauty concentrated in a few blocks as in the center of Nis, the most important city in southern Serbia.
Nis is the third largest city in Serbia and is located in the south of the country, on the banks of the Nišava River. It is a city with a population of 192,208 inhabitants and 260,237 in its metropolitan area with a rich history and culture, dating back to ancient times and that can be seen in its streets.
But the swaying anatomies that swarm around us also speak to us of a prosperous present and that is what we are going to focus on during this visit.
We invite you to leave your opinions about it in comments. You can also tell us if you prefer us to visit cities, small towns, natural paradises or beaches. In our next videos.
Nis has been inhabited since ancient times and has been ruled by different empires over the centuries, which is reflected in its architecture and culture. The city has a variety of archaeological sites, museums and monuments that document its past.
From its main and liveliest streets you can see the majestic mountains that frame the city and the river, which separates it from the old part. You can see that part of Nis in another video that we uploaded to the channel.
Nis is surrounded by beautiful nature. The city is located in the valley of the Nišava River, which is surrounded by mountains and forests. There are many opportunities to explore nature, such as hiking, cycling and fishing.
Nis has a lively nightlife. The city has a variety of bars, clubs and restaurants that offer entertainment until late into the night, we were able to walk some of these streets and appreciate how the locals enjoy their routine at the end of the day.
The people of Nis are generally friendly and welcoming. Visitors are always welcome to the city.
If you are thinking about visiting or living in Nis, here are some tips:
Serbian is the official language of Nis, and learning some basic phrases will help you communicate with local people. Although Nis is a city with a rich culture, not many speak foreign languages and it is important to be respectful of their customs.
Visit Nis in summer, although Serbia has hot places several months a year, it is best to endure the temperatures of the summer season and enjoy the urban liveliness.
Don't dedicate just one day to Nis on your journey. When you arrive you will see that the city is attractive, has a lot to enjoy and is economical, a combo that is difficult to miss.
The scale of a medium-sized city in Nis is ideal for exploring it leisurely, at the pace of passers-by, and being able to get a complete idea of the city in a single visit. Serbia is a country that has a lot to discover and this is a very representative city.
