Nia Ashleigh is a 3-time YoungArts Awards winner. She has performed for Clive Davis, Dionne Warwick, Andra Day, and taken bows on the stages of New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Ashleigh has also appeared in "The Lion King" on Broadway.
Michael Muenchow has held lead roles in many musicals. He has been in such musicals as "The Sound of Music" (Gateway Playhouse), "Bye Bye Birdie", "Cinderella" (Rossini's Opera and Rogers & Hammerstein's), "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and more. He has also been in productions of "Les Misérables", "The Exonerated", "Amadeus", "The Boys in the Band", and other theater productions.
"The Lion King" is a musical play based on the 1994 Walt Disney Animation Studios animated feature film of the same name with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, along with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. Directed by Taymor, the musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. The show is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.
On June 20, 2017, Broadway Sings for Pride held a Broadway-themed concert, as part of "NYC Pride: Family Movie Night", at Pier 45 (Hudson River Park), in New York City. Prior to the very special screening of the film "The Lion King" at dusk, family friendly selections related to New York and "The Lion King" were performed. Broadway Sings for Pride is a multiple award-winning, non-for-profit organization that brings together Broadway talent, activists, and celebrities, to educate the public, raise awareness of the needs of LGBTQ+ youth, and support these young people, so that they may reach their full potential.
Ashleigh and Muenchow performed the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" during the event, where Shefik served as Videographer. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" is a song from the animated film "The Lion King", composed by John with lyrics by Rice. At the 67th Academy Awards in March 1995, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The same year the song also won Elton John the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
It was a chart hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 14 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart, and achieved even more success in the United States, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a number-one hit in Canada and France.
