Niagara City Cruises is opening for the 2023 season tomorrow, marking the earliest opening date ever in the boat tour’s recorded history.
“2023 is our comeback year, and we are excited to be able to welcome both locals and tourists alike to the iconic destination,” Chief Operating Officer of City Cruises in Canada, Mory DiMaurizio said.
“This is an historic event for boat tours to the base of Niagara Falls marking the earliest on record that Niagara City Cruises has ever operated, and going back before our time, there is no recorded opening of the Niagara Falls boat tours operating as early as March.”
Tours run tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will continue to be offered for the next four days. Tours will additionally be offered on the weekend of March 24 to 26.
Daily service begins on March 31 with tours to the base of the falls running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Expanded summer operating hours start at the beginning of May.
Niagara City Cruises says the opening date for the season largely depends on when the ice on Lake Erie melts away.
With only one percent of Lake Erie’s surface covered with ice due to a mild winter, the New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation were able to remove the ice boom early.
An ice boom is a device used to limit the amount of ice entering the Niagara River in order to lessen the likelihood of ice jams.
Ontario Power Generation says the Niagara River ice boom consists of a 2.7-kilometre span of floating steel pontoons that are linked together by steel cables and anchored to the river bottom.
Tickets for boats tours can be found at Niagara City Cruises’ website, and also in-person at the Niagara City Cruises Main Ticket Plaza located at 5920 Niagara River Parkway in Niagara Falls.
