I’m delighted to hear this again. I recorded it live in December 1980 at the Mitre Folk Club in Stourbridge, West Midlands. At the time I produced and presented a folk music show on Beacon Radio, a local commercial station. Years later, I passed the tape of the programme to a BBC sound engineer, Ralph, who was overseeing the production of this double CD. My recordings of Master Kilby and Sonny Brogans Mazurca are also there.

This channel has a lot of really great songs. I'm not into any of this and it just not really doing anything for me but its great music. Gotta find something here that gives me that feeling. I did type "kick" but that's not an accurate word for the music here.
It's a fine rewriting if Ann Lister's masterpiece but it is shameful that this idiosyncratic version has ten times as many views as Ann's original. I feel this misses the underlying point of the whole song. It is about a parent''s pain on seeing a son's failure, not a son's guilt about causing his mother's grief. Why shameful? That implies malicious intent. Come on! I had never heard of this before, and to be honest I have never heard of Ann Lister - I'll now go and have a listen. Which I would;t have done had this not been uploaded here. For goodness' sake - have your own likes and dislikes but don't go looking for ill-will where it doesn't exist!
