This month marks eight years since the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) first-ever menopause guidelines were published in a bid to improve the consistency of support and information provided to women during the menopause.
The guidelines were developed for healthcare professionals, and for women themselves, and cover menopause diagnosis and management.
But what does this mean for you and the level of menopause care you should expect from healthcare professionals?
In this video to coincide with the anniversary, Dr Louise Newson and Newson Health Chief Clinical Officer and Operations Director Katy Jackson discuss:
- Key recommendations included in the NICE menopause guidelines, including HRT, menopause-related low mood and testosterone
- How the NICE guidelines are used in practice at Newson Health
- The importance of individualised care, and shared decision making
- How the NICE guidelines can empower you to receive good menopause care

I wasn’t allowed to see a doctor, I had to speak to one over the phone. I was crying when she phoned, I asked for HRT and the first thing she said was do I know it has a risk of breast and womb cancer and do I still want to go ahead? I said yes, I’d done my research. She asked me if I was suicidal, I said no but I didn’t particularly want to go on and she offered me anti depressants too. End of conversation. This was 4 weeks ago. I appreciate the doctor is only following a process but how I was treated was a disgrace. It has to stop. Thank you Dr Newson for everything you have done and continuing to fight for the treatment all women deserve.

Offering antidepressants has been drummed into doctors and ensures they are not held liable for patient self harm once it’s stated out loud. Women needing HRT actually need a full assessment and follow ups but this is time and labor intensive and even those you pay privately cannot seem to get out of the fast lane especially here in the US you get 5-10 minutes at best and the whole time the doctor is documenting on an iPad and not even looking at you. Welcome to an overwhelmed system charging huge amounts of money.

HRT is a no brainer for me , changed my life , clearer skin,mood ,hair ,no sore joints, no crappy mode, feel 20 years younger, it’s a miracle drug. I have a blood test every year. Mood, happiness , feel can do anything on hrt. Thank you for your updates.

Thank you, really helpful. The most useful thing I learnt here was that the guidance is 8 years old, and should be more up-to-date. X

Thank you for discussing the treatment of tetestorone.I had a hysterectomy and removal of ovaries and immediately entered surgical menopause .Within 6 weeks i felt suicidal. However, i have been lucky enough to be able to access Hrt and afford the private prescription for Androfeme, the female testosterone discussed. Not only has this helped libido but my mental health has improved, my energy levels are better and less joint pain. This really needs to be offered for all ladies on the NHS.

Sadly most women don’t realize whether/how they need to ask for testosterone. In the US you have to clearly state sexual dysfunction (this is self reported and not provable) to get it and it’s not FDA approved so not currently covered by any subsidy or insurance. Maybe the only good thing about having surgical menopause is I finally got the help I needed and no one stood in my way.

I looked at the new proposed Nice Guidelines for 2024 and I found there was a change in the guidelines that seemed different from the eight-year-old guidelines .e.g. the longer you are on HRT the bigger the risks (like strokes) compared to non HRT (when I was hoping to be on them for life). It would be helpful to have your input on this as I may be understanding them wrongly Will you be doing a Podcast on the proposed change in advice?

I've tried estradot patches even the high strength of 100mg , I wasnt absorbing them as all my menopause symptoms came back , co,d and hot flushing, parastia, fornication, UTI! My dr put me of oestragel , I'm on it for 4 weeks I'm still getting a heated body and flushing, poor sleep anxiety! I'm await for my mireena coil to be removed as its misplaced lower in my uterus, I'm awaiting to get this replaced as I still having periods as 54! I'm also offered utragestran 100mg at nite for my sleep anxiety, I'm worried to take it ,as I'm progesterone sensitive as I've always suffered from PMS.❤

... I"m your age and also still peri... and I also had PMS, but the only effect I saw when I started to take progesterone pills with utrogest (100 mg - only a few days ago) was becoming tired more quickly at night, calmer and deeper sleep and much improved mood (because of that?). I think, there is absolutely no reason to be afraid as progesteron is the least "effective" of all 3 hormones. Keep my fingers crossed for your journey 🤞🌼

... and try different variations: the patches must really stick on properly to allow absorption and there are different tricks how to achieve that (watch more RU-vid clips on that) or switch to the gels that you rub in properly with your hands into the upper thighs or forearms. The skin should absorb the gel relatively quickly within 1-2 minutes or so. Dr. Louise Newson also has short clips with info on that...

Is there an age cut off to start HRT?
@noramaddy4409
@noramaddy4409 6 месяцев назад
No, there is not but the doctor might tell you that there is!!! Read Dr Louise Newson`s book and check the information by following up with other authors on the subject. Doctors surely know this information but continue to tell women all the lies about breast cancer risk etc to discourage them from pursuing HRT treatment.
