Truly a stunning depiction of Trauma related to Korra's final battle in book 3. A different class of episode, this masterpiece stands alone in its unwavering dark telling of Korra fighting against the scars of her past. We were floored from the minute it began, and ENTHRALLED by THE RETURN OF TOPH!!! We cannot WAIT to see what happens next, and have adored this season thus far.
Book 4, Episode 3, will premiere Sunday, 5/9 at 12 pm est!

Even though as a CHILD, that PTSD and Survivor's Guilt should've f****d Aang up for YEARS. We literally got ONE episode out of the ENTIRE 3 SEASON ATLA where it was weighing him down. After that? @@LettsReact Mostly, a lot of people think Korra is "the worst avatar", for she "loses all her fights", got her link to her previous lives destroyed, etc... Which is stupid. She wins a lot of her fights, and the one she loses have real impacts on her, sure... But surpassing trauma is a very impressing feat in itself. As for the rest... She fought and defeated FUCKING VAATU during a 10.000y cyclic event, restaured the air nation, stopped one of the most dangerous criminal group in the world, and what she will be up to in the 4th season. She fought some of the stronger benders of the world, but also had to tackle more morally complex situations than what we saw in AtlA ( beating a tyrant was pretty hard sure, but it wasn't very morally nuanced. Ozai was a bad dude, and had to be removed ), like how spirits and Humans interacts for exemple... But yeah, sure. She is "the worst avatar !"... When we already know there was an Avatar born in a time of peace, which used his avatar state for SURFING, and lost his life trying to avenge his loved one... By getting his face stolen by the same spirit which stole his lover's face. I mean... Come on Kuruk ! You had ONE JOB !

Honestly this is one of my favourite episodes of all of korra and avatar as a whole, it was really interesting to see her journey from being this really confident being to someone who really doubted her ability’s - something I don’t think we all say coming from korra. Watching her struggle and not be the perfect gifted child she has been since she was discovered as the avatar. I think this episode also shows the links between korra and zuko - struggling with their identity. Overall there are so many moments in this episode that for sure make me tear bend so I hope you guys enjoy it.

I praise this episode for its accurate portrayal of the frustrations and effects when trying to recover from a handicapping event. As a caretaker of a stroke victim, I've seen the desperation, emotional depression, and need to direct all that frustration at somebody that occur during this time. To anyone whose loved one has similar incidents, they need all the physical, medical, and psychological support that they can get. The longer a recovery takes, the more taxing it is on the mind.

The time when this episode / Book 4 was released, I assumed that the awareness for mental health and trauma was minimal than now. I remember that people criticised her mental struggles as a huge plot hole as they tried to reason that she’s physically strong yet losing fights, yet they really unaware that she was battling with her mind and trauma. I was a young teen back then so I was on a turmoil on liking or hating Korra due to the public reaction at the time. However, now in my mid 20’s.. I love this character. I finally understood her struggles and growth because I been there. I got in a tragic accident that I had to go through not only physical therapy but the biggest struggle was to actually overcome my fear and trauma to finally drive again and not having panic attacks in a vehicle, even when sitting in the passenger’s seat. That took me 3 years.. That event alone is just one of the struggles I went through in my life and it’s really empowering to see the progress.

I always thought that the reason Dark Korra had a manifestation that could hurt her harkened back to something that Iroh said. He mentioned that, in the Spirit world, your emotions could become real, is part of it. The Avatar is the bridge between worlds, and houses the most powerful light spirit within her. So I think that with her severe trauma her fear is now far more powerful that her rational mind. And one of Korra's fears is being too weak. With her fear being so powerful, I think her fear is now controlling the light spirit within her and fighting her. Or maybe Rava was using her fear to push and guide her to the swamp to get the help she needed.

The way I explain that "hallucination" Korra: So, we know now that the Avatar is an amalgamation of Raava and Korra's own spirit; i believe, then, that Raava can now know what a human goes through physically and mentally thanks to that merging of souls. With that in mind, I think that when Korra was poisoned, for the first time Raava was forced to be traumatized too; i think that Raava learned just how scary it is to have a deteriorating physical body be more in control than she is during the Avatar state. So Korra when through TRIPLE the trauma: she was traumatized physically (with the poison torture), mentally (with Zaheer as the abuser), and spiritually which would leak into Raava. This PTSD that Korra is going through, is now something that Raava has to go through too; and since it is new to Raava, I think that Raava's subconscious (if she has any) is manifesting as a form of energy (energybending) that is corporeal and would then be visible to other spiritual bodies. I think that Korra's mistake when talking to the spirits in the Tree of Time, was that she didn't realize that their "help" would be very different from the help that people have been giving her. When the little spirit asked if they could help her she declinedand said, "...For years people have been trying to help me..." 🙄 umm, yeah... PEOPLE have been helping you, they were SPIRITS and they were trying to help Korra which would in turn help Raava. I think she was just too blocked to rationalize that the spirit's help would be different than the "help" she was getting from humans.
