In the ensuing years, Mary decided to “get even,” by persuading King George to rescind the offer of asylum. Queen Mary had no idea of the consequences of her actions. I’m certain she suffered for her choice.

@@Petal4822 He did not do so for very valid reasons. At the time George declined them asylum, no one know they would be murdered. It was simply assumed they'd go elsewhere. If N&A really cared about those children, they would have sent them abroad at the outset. They chose not to.

Even IF King George V decided not to accept the family for asylum- and that story changes every decade - it wasn’t a matter of a cousin not taking in his cousin’s family. It was a matter of another country accepting deposed rulers who had the reputation of being murderous autocrats. No a lot of the subjugation of human rights was not Nicholas the person’s fault but it was done in his name. George had to think about his own people. And if the PM had wanted to send a ship for Alexandra and the children, he could have done so. The PM had the authority to do that- he technically didn’t need George’s permission

It was a coup from above and from within the State - the people never lost their love for their Tsar!

Aloofness was their downfall

As someone else stated, aloofness was their downfall, directly contributing to their murder. It’s important to distinguish between their personal, private lives and their public lives as rulers. Nicholas and Alexandra were very much in love and had a beautiful family and happy home life. Quite an idyllic personal life by all accounts. But Nicholas was ill-prepared for life as Tsar and made horrendous decisions, took bad advice, etc. He clung to autocratic rule with absolute authority in the face of changing times, to his great detriment. Alexandra was gripped by overwhelming fear for her son and embraced Rasputin who seemed to be the only one who could offer help. The Russian populace was aware of Rasputin’s character and her refusal to acknowledge the problem or explain Alexei’s situation at all exacerbated the problem. Instead of offering at least some information and explanation to the people, she withdrew almost entirely, focused only on her own problems. Neither ever acknowledged or sought to alleviate the suffering of tragedies like the trampling of people at their coronation. Worse, they attended a ball that night. And they continued to make similar, poor ruling decisions up until their murder. Admittedly, they didn’t seem to have malicious intent, but they were utterly incompetent as rulers. They completely failed to see and acknowledge the changing times, instead falling back on autocratic rule with absolute power, outdated even then. They cruelly ignored people’s suffering, causing PR nightmares without realizing what a big problem they created. Bluntly, they made supremely STUPID decisions as rulers. Alexei’s health should have been at least been minimally explained. Rasputin should have been banished. The tragedies and people’s suffering should have been acknowledged and alleviated to the extent possible and balls should have been cancelled. Autocratic rule and absolute power should have been relinquished in favor of some form of democracy. Etc. Most of all, Nicholas and Alexandra should NOT have withdrawn from the public or cocooned themselves away from public life. Eventually, it all added up. Their fate and the end of the Romanov family was an absolute tragedy. However, their own behavior as rulers directly contributed to their murder.

The sadder story is how these royal families abused their ppl for hundreds of years. Ppl starved and died under these ppl while they stayed n the lap of abundance

I watched it. It was good but I'm picky when it comes to fictionalized fact or factualized fiction, depending on the subject matter. I still enjoyed it despite the inconsistencies though.

King George wanted to save the Romanovs, but his prime minister and parliament wouldn't allow him to do it. The king of England has no real power. The elected parliament has all the power. It has been that way since 1688.

I might be wrong but I remember hearing that Nicholas’ father saw him as unfit therefore, did not prepare him. And I believe most monarchs ascend the throne around the age of 40 except for cases like Nicolas where his father died young.

He could have been trained from his teens as QE2 has done for WiIIam. He really was not suited to be a leader. Just as David wasn't. He was a party boy. Left red boxes around, wine stains on official documents. Shared state secrets with Wallis who was having a thing with the Germain ambassador. But then again his brother wasn't trained or particularly suited to the job, but rose beautifully to the occasion.

Nicholas’ father didn’t see him as “ mature” enough or “ready.” In addition, Nick’s father thought he had more time. It was unexpected, for the Tsar, who was otherwise strong and healthy, to come down with kidney disease/failure, and die in his 40s. At the time Tsar Alexander (Nick father) died from kidney failure, there was no such thing as dialysis. In addition, film 1930s 🇺🇸 film star died at about age 25 or 26 from the same thing that killed Tsar Alexander, and there still was no dialysis THEN either! I’ll have to look into the approximate year that kidney dialysis bec available to help ppl with kidney disease.

He was fine for the role of ruler. Russia has made a huge step forward in 20 years of his rule. The revolution is not the result of his and only his mistakes. A huge number of reasons for the Revolution stretches back to the 18th century.

I'm not sure if 'unfit' is the right word. They were somewhat unprepared and childlike; their letters show that much. One gets the strong impression they had far rather forget the whole thing and just be with one another and raise their kids. But how does one guide a representative of God?

And that is a lot of the reason why I don't believe in hereditary monarchy. Quite often the person who inherits the position does not want it, but it is considered a dereliction of duty if they don't assume it. And that is just stupid. No one else in the world is required to work at any job if they don't want it. This does not mean that they wouldn't be good at the job; but it is not what they would have chosen for themselves. Queen Elizabeth II is this type of person and her father, George VI, didn't want to be monarch either. He actually cried when he learned it was his fate. But poor Nicholas never wanted any part of it. He did it because he had no choice and then he had to pay for it with his life. If a hereditary heir does not want the hereditary position, then there should be absolutely no shame in passing it onto someone who does want it. And then there are people who want power and authority and then are disasters when they have it, e.g. Donald Trump. But hereditary monarchy is a ridiculous institution in our modern age.

I'll just list some of the achievements. He increased the funding of the Ministry of Public Education several times over. Russia was among the leaders in the cultivation and export of grain. For 20 years of His reign, the population of Russia has increased to 170 million people. And there was 120 million at the beginning. Every year the aristocracy lost more and more land. They passed on to the middle and lower classes of society. The deposits of ordinary people in banks grew. Also, Nikolai II became one of the founders of the modern system of international law. It was on his initiative that the International Conference was convened in The Hague. Nicholas came up with very radical measures for disarmament (even by modern standards), and therefore a small part of them was adopted. Before the First World War, Nicholas just hoped that it would be possible to agree at the negotiating table. But Wilhelm II ignored Nicholas's telegrams. But the portrait of Nicholas II still hangs in The Hague. By the way, it was Nicholas who in 1907 proposed the creation of the League of Nations. In 1921, US President Warren Harding warmly recalled at the Washington Conference the "Emperor of All Russia" and his noble aspirations. And one of the problems could be noted just the question of the quality of life of the common population, which became somewhat worse in the First World War. Serfdom slowed down many processes in Russia. And serfdom became much more acute after Ivan the Terrible's Oprichnina. The country needed to be rebuilt, and the government chose the easiest path. Then it became tougher because of the Time of Troubles. Then Peter the Great will merge the peasants and slaves into one estate. Of course, with an oblique attitude towards slaves. Serfdom reached its peak under Catherine the Great. But capitalism has already managed to lag behind Western Europe in many aspects. National and especially Jewish question. In Russia, Jews were welcomed only in 2 cases: if they had a higher education or accepted Orthodoxy. After the partitions of Poland under Catherine the Great, the majority of all Jews in the world ended up in Russia. It was the Jews who made up a large number of revolutionaries in the 19th and early 20th centuries. And they can be understood. A similar question was raised in Poland, Finland, Ukraine and the Caucasus. The living conditions of the workers were poor. And Nicholas and his family could not imagine leaving Russia and living in exile anywhere. They were basically in shock at their loss of power, and the government was so unstable that they may not have thought that leaving immediately was the best thing to do. They basically wanted to retire to Livadia in the Crimea and live as farmers and landowners but the Bolsheviks would never allow that. I believe Lenin had it "in" for Nicholas and his family because Lenin's brother had been executed by the tsarist government for revolutionary activities. I think Lenin was gleeful to be able to get revenge for his brother's execution. What gets me about the Bolsheviks was that all they cared about was creating chaos and grabbing as much power as they could. Much infighting, murdering one another, etc. It was a mess and they had NO plan for governance. They actually believed that instituting the Russian revolution would cause revolution all over Europe and in America. They were dreamers and fools and led the way for Stalin, who murdered millions and millions of his own countrymen. And the Russian people have been suffering ever since. Putin is former KGB and has stolen Russia blind --he is one of the richest people in the world because he steals anything he wants from the Russian people.
