You can really see the passion that Burton and Cage shared for this project in these clips. It’s sad that we couldn’t see their vision truly realized, but it’s pretty awesome that we got just a taste in “the flash.”
And then after the success of that movie, it expanded into DCEU of that universe but suceeded and managed to build up 22 movies towards crisis on infinite earths
Nicholas Cage seems like a genuinely nice dude to hang out with. I know he's a huge Superman fan and I don't know how this would have turned out, but I'm sorry he didn't get the chance to play the character.
That's kinda the point. This was supposed to be a completely new Superman. Not the Richard Donner version. And I honestly would've liked to have seen this new alternative take on the character. At least he doesn't snap people's necks off in this version.
You can love or hate Nick Cage's acting, but there is 1 thing we can ALL agree on: he is great (way good) at acting 2 identities. I feel that his Superman/Clark Kent swap could had been perfect. Hiding his identity at plain sight, just by acting "smaller", more vulnerable, more human. Now THAT is something I would love to see Cage tackling.
Cage actually recently said that he would've approached his Superman similar to his performance in City of Angels (1998). I had to watch the movie myself to see how he was. And he was very calm, talked low and always had a warm smile. (I mean angel? Superman? It's close enough.) And after seeing it, I was really upset he wasn't Superman because that movie's performance showed he could've been a really good and likeable Man of Steel.
I like the no underpants thing. The circus strong man reference with those exo-draws tethers superman to one certain time and nobody gets the reference anymore. I say let him be alien the new 52 design was fine
And the fake muscles built into the suit and having them kinda highlighted using darker blues to make it look like there's shadows. After Man of Steel, just look at the suit and it looks like they painted on his muscles.
It’s actually the metallic padding underneath the suit. The fabric of the MoS suit itself becomes slightly translucent once it’s stretched over the padding, hence the sort of visible abs and biceps. The Justice League version specifically used shiny metallic under padding so that the suit - under the intended lighting from Snyder’s shoot - would make the suit take on a vibrancy and almost sparkle. Unfortunately, the way it was reshot the suit took on a weird turquoise color and the padding ended up looking like smeared deodorant and just was a complete abomination. There’s promo footage that was shot by Snyder that was officially released (I believe the AT&T branded 2-3 minute long character promos) where we see the suit in its proper lighting and color grading and it looks really nice. Without it necessarily looking brighter or more colorful, the suit appears to have evolved to match the theme of a happier, more confident and mature post-resurrection Superman.
Cavill’Superman was just a little outside the box, and many people didn’t like it (I’m not among these people). So I don’t think it would have been a success
But that was meant to be a new take on the Clark Kent alias of Kal-El, who often portays his fake image as this klutz, socially awkward, naive and regular Joe kinda guy with a sci-fi fanboy nerd twist. Point is Kal-El does this to draw attention away from him for the fact he is the GODDAMN MAN OF STEEL himself...SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly didn't mind that. It made Clark look more like an alien freak than Superman as he tries to be human, resulting in him looking freakier in the process. He would look so dorky that literally nobody would believe this dude would be Superman. Which is also why they cast Nicolas Cage to begin with because they wanted people to understand that he is an alien.
He then looses his powers and Is places under arrest so he agrees to have his face switched with Lex Luthor (played by John Travolta) to go undercover and thwart Luthor's evil plan, the ending of the movie takes place on a plane full of convicts nicknamed Con Air
That's why you never hire people who don't know jack crap from the origins to the modern version of any comic book character pre SJW. Fans want an actual depiction. Not a water down version of said characters.
This would've been the most amazing most wonderful train wreck the world would have ever known. "What does the cape mean, exactly?" Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
lol even the whole energy of the room, the conversations they're having, it all feels so half-hearted and defeated. Like they somehow knew in the back of their heads, "This is not working, and is just a waste of all of our time."
@Teddy Holiday lol no way man, that is some of the most plodding and forced enthusiasm I've ever heard. Maybe they were coming down off the Hollywood coke by that point, idk. I mean they're clearly trying to be "into it" but it all feels super hollow and kinda aimless to me.
@@tuanjim799 Uh, you know this isn't a movie, right? They aren't performing for you. They're doing a job. Maybe you've never had one, but this is what people with jobs sound like.
That would’ve been a great Superman movie to watch as a kid. It’s interesting to see Nicolas Cage collaborating with Tim Burton in this video. For a brief time anyway. Hopefully, they will make a new movie that might work for both of them in the future.
Who knows, if this film would have been made in 1998 and been successfull then they would have created a DC shared universe with batman & Robin at least a decade before it became trendy. In all honesty no matter how bad the film would have turned out it still would have been better than superman returnes. I still enjoy Batman & Robin for what it is despite it's campiness, probably because i have fond memories of watching it as a child
How sad to know that while in this room Tim was doing costume fittings with Nic Cage, one of the producers, I think it's Peter Guber, was trying in vain to convince Warner producers not to cancel the movie. I hope The Flash movie corrects this mistake from Warner's past, I really hope so, for the sake of the DC universe
Tru Dis yeah you guys weren’t screaming that when they chose him as the Batman ; nor did you probably do the same for Heathe Ledger when he was chosen to portray the Joker, now did you?
I worked on the suit for Superman Returns. People have no idea how much work goes into costumes sometimes for years before principle photography begins. Very hard and rewarding work.
@@FinalConsensusNot one of the people that worked on the suit (several decades too young for that haha), but if I recall correctly from the behind the scenes book, he was too big for the suit they made so when they resized it they didn't do a great job. I'll have to look again to fact check later.
People also forget that the first suit shown in the video was a TEST. It wasn't finalized. The final suit they made actually resembled his original red, yellow, blue suit, with the red underpants but the spandex was a rubber bodysuit and deeper blue color. And I feel people judge it unfairly because you don't have the lighting and sets, and the world Tim Burton would've established.
Damn, Nic was all for it and same as Tim and you can see the excitement and anticipation to start filming and doing scenes in their faces. Such a shame that it never lifted off.

They should include Nics version of Kal-El in the upcoming Flash movie. Even for 5 minutes because he's such a massive Superman fan. The entire DCU is getting rebooted after The Flash anyways so it would be awesome to see Keatons Batman and Cages Superman, both envisioned by Tim Burton, appear together finally.
