Ex-military sniper, Nicholas Irving, shared his perspective on self-defense. While Irving acknowledged he'd never engaged in hand-to-hand combat himself, he relayed stories from colleagues who had. However, when asked about self-defense in civilian situations, Irving's first advice was to walk away. He emphasized the unpredictability of the other person's mental state or potential for violence. Should self-defense become necessary, Irving suggested carrying something like pepper spray for protection. If left unarmed, he stressed the importance of targeting vulnerable parts of the body such as the groin, solar plexus, or throat. He also underlined that defending oneself should never be fair or polite, but rather raw and ruthless. And yet, before resorting to any form of physical attack, Irving recommended trying peaceful resolutions, like seeking help or informing an authority figure. Irrespective of the situation, his advice was: "It should never be a fair fight."

One of my old co workers looked like he fixed computers for a living. 5’5 with huge jeffery dahmer glasses. Turns out he was an amateur mma fighter that just got home from the military. After i met him, i adopted the mindset of just assuming everybody could be a killer and i should just avoid conflict unless necessary. You really never know who youre talking to.

You can die in a fist fight. I’ll never forget seeing a fight downtown Cleveland, one guy was punched and when he fell, he hit his head on the curb and later passed from his injury. That changed my entire perspective on street fights.

Too many people watching TV and thinking the real world is some sort of UFC or Boxing etc. When you're about to be in a fight, your natural instincts are going to kick in so hard, you don't have time to play by "rules", your body is literally in survival mode. I've also noticed a lot of these gym guys use this excuse to fight by their rules, when they're up against someone who they know is weaker than them, because when it comes to someone who is similar to them, they want to be peaceful. It's actually really funny, the world isn't a big TV screen.

That wasn't good advice to give to civilian in United States. First line of defense is walk away. But you are only allowed to defend yourself according to the threat that was presented. So unless this person had a weapon for you to take their eye out, you will be held responsible for the type of beating you give them if it's not deemed reasonable.

There is no crying 'No Fair!' in the streets. That's like gangbangers who are always shocked when someone gets caught and tells on everyone else. The other gangbangers are like, "How can you tell! This! I was told the same thing by two of the toughest martial artists I know. One of them was on the cover of black belt mag back in the day. My other friend fought NHB back before MMA became popular. Both these men said they're getting the heck out of there because "anything can happen".

I received an honors award from the community because I did not use lethal force (in which I could have and been justified) That just goes to show you never know someone’s skill set so don’t start fights, train hard, pray and protect yourself and your family at all times if you cannot walk away.
