Nick & Ant On Open Relationships, Threesomes and a HEALTHY Sex Life 

i was with my husband for 20 wonderful years , we were very committed to each other , I lost him to cancer 4 years ago. he was 40 . i miss him very dearly . we would have just celebrated our 24 anniversary .. stay committed to each other , it is worth it ,

I rather be alone than in an open relationship.

As a gay man in his 50s I’ve witnessed quite a few friends and acquaintances in open relationships or threesomes over the years, and none of them worked long term, literally none. Jealously, resentment, or leaving their current partner for “someone better they met” are common, and in threesomes you normally find one pair become closer which pushes out the third person. I think 2 years has been the maximum I’ve personally witnessed with people I know. Luckily the majority of people were strong enough to say “OK, this isn’t working, we need to stop doing this” before it destroyed their relationship. However I have also known a couple whose relationship was stagnating who opened their relationship up to a threesome which reignited their passion for each other, and they became monogamous again a couple of years later and in a stronger position when the third person started to get closer to one of them and they recognised it was starting to damage things. Not saying it can’t work or can’t be fun for a short time, but it’s a very emotionally complex rollercoaster.

My husband and I had a twenty year difference in age. He was 40 and I was 20. He had twenty years of freedom before we were together and I kind of had zero. We were madly in love but we both had compete freedom sexually both separately and together. We even went to bathhouses together. We were in a loving relationship for 48 years until his death 7 months ago. We discussed everything. There were never any secrets nor was there jealousy.

I have been following you and watching your videos for many many years. There has been a huge gap from Covid where I haven’t seen you and your content. Recently your content came back to light on my RU-vid and I’m so glad it did. This is my favourite ever video of yours & I loved the input from your older friends. I think that open relationships can work.. but only if both parties feel the same about the opening the relationship. Sometimes, although both parties want to open the relationship, jealousy can slowly creep in & then things can disintegrate rapidly. Unfortunately that happened to friends of mine who were together since their teens then married after about 6 happy years together. They decided to start having threesomes about a year into their marriage & it was like the kiss of death to their relationship. They are now divorced & things became reallly ugly between them before they split up.. On the other hand, some other friends of mine are still completely in love after years and years of being open. I’m almost 59, my husband is 40…we truly thought we were much closer in age. Love set in and it was too late to not be together because of the age difference. Anyway, I’ve never been open nor has my husband. We’ve been married 15 year. Going through the great times along with the crap times is what strengthens our bond and commitment. It is absolutely foreign to me how throwing a 3rd person in the mix would ever help that bond and commitment. For me, no way to be open. Plus, who has the time for that?! The time spent looking for another person should be spent on your relationship and why one sees a need to add a 3rd.

When you have open relationships there is no true commitment to the person you love only your next hookup...commitment means total love and devotion to the one person you love not to a husband swapping orgy.

Open relationships for the most part arent good for your relationship. If you are just looking for fun with your bf thats fine but if you want something with them for life i dont recommend it. Relationships are hard enough and if you add other people it usually does not bring you closer to your partner. Some couples can do it but in my experience relationships dont last long term having an open relationship and by long term i mean for life. In the end you have to know yourself and your partner. Be open and honest.

This is a very interesting conversation. In reading a number of the comments I noticed a common sentiment expressed that echoed Nick's feeling about open relationships: jealousy. It has always been fascinating to me to see how westerners have romanticized jealousy and some people even crave their partner to be jealous as a sign of love or loyalty. I'm not saying this is wrong or right but I personally don't understand it. I remember having jealous feelings of my husband having a gay friend (after some irritating situations with that friend) and I asked myself why I was jealous. And I kept asking myself why until I got to the principal answer: I was simply afraid that he would leave me for this guy. But I knew that I didn't want to live in fear of my husband leaving me for anyone. Which meant that I would have to talk to him, share my feelings and trust him. If he kept that trust perfect! If he didn't, sad day and we would have to separate but at least I wouldn't live in jealousy or fear or even anger towards his friend. I disagree with this take on Open Relationships.

I’m gonna say it. I listened to all episodes and Ant just interrupts the flow of every conversation, especially when it’s a deep conversation, he always interrupts it with some crude irrelevant ’joke’. We can see he is somewhat insecure or not fully mature, passing on his opinions as loaded questions or remarks. The conversations are so interesting until he butts in

Fear of commitment and fear of loosing freedom to have sex with others is how I see open relationship is and we are finding excuse to normalise it, in fact, it is now dominating on how gay men should have relationship these days and seems monogamy is being left out. Because of this, It's way harder to find a relationship and even date for those people who want to be in monogamous relationships.

You don’t need an open relationship if you find the right person who is willing to listen to you, give you space, feed your soul, and please your body, even when they are not necessarily in the mood themselves. That, is the definition of a partner. One who will go to great lengths to make you happy, but not willing to lose themselves in the same process tho… balance… It’s a give and take… I tell my partner at the end of the day, hey I’m at 70% today, can you at least give me 30% help?
