I must've seen these ads a million times growing up. But that voiceover guy sure had a calming, comforting presence. I feel like I should send him a father's day card.
Boy I wish this was their schedule now! They used to air so many good classic black and white shows. I remember that little series of beeps so well also. Now all they show is the crap that every other channel shows, garbage from the last 20 years that sucked when it was new and sucks now. Thanks so much for the good memories here.
I loved Nick at Nite back in the late 1980's when they showed My Three Sons, Laugh-In, Patty Duke, Saturday Night Live, SCTV, Fernwood 2-Night, and the black and white episodes of Bewitched.
The good old days of TV!! I refuse to watch TV today because of the fact that it went downhill. Sure I have a couple local stations here in the Milwaukee area that have retro spin-off channels. But they don't compare to what Nick at Night and TV Land use to air. They are limited to only a selected package of retro shows (I believe it's Vicom's fault). This brings back fond memories of sitting with my mom at night with a bowl of popcorn watching great TV.
I think Dwayne Hickman would be most flattered by that statement. He was a wonderful actor and is still making appearances at tv conventions and comic book shows, last I heard.
Awesome love the Donna reed show don’t remember seeing these promos interesting I remember seeing the Donna reed show on nick at nite in 1991 until 1994 when Nick at nite took it off the air☺️
I miss this so much. TV land and Nick@nite used to have a lot of different classic shows on now Nick@nite only shows Roseanne all the time. Disney Channel also used to show classic shows like The Mikey Mouse Club! I was born in the 80s but I used to enjoy watching old shows late at night as a teen, they felt like an history lesson.
FACT: That was George Coe of SNL fame doing the voiceovers. He was only on the first 2 episodes of Saturday Night Live when it first started. I think he had a pretty decent career doing voiceovers for Nickelodeon/Nick At Nite for almost 20 years.
These are wonderful. I miss the old Nick at Nite so much; I was lucky to tape some of this myself. Mr. Ed, My Three Sons, Susie, Car 54, I Spy. Great stuff. Thanks for taking me back almost 20 years!
Do you remember the Nick-at-Nite segments that featured stand-up comics? I think Ellen DeGeneres was in a couple of them, and there was a guy who imitated the lag of the voice track in spaghetti westerns, etc.? I'm trying to track those down online. They might have called it the Nick-at-Nite lounge.
If you GOOGLE Ann Sothern, there is a "In Memoriam" posting dedicated to that grand lady that is quite factual. Not only were she and Lucy great friends and part-time professional rivals, they appeared in several productions together.
They turn up on TV Land every once in a while, along with original programming, like we're seeing here. For example, they ran a show with Florence Henderson (Carol Brady), Shirley Jones (Shirley Partridge) and Marian Ross (Marian Cunningham) some time ago -- forgot the name, though.
Many, many years ago Nick at Nite aired a half hour special called "We'll Be Right Back", a collection of TV commercials from the 1950's to the 80's. I will be putting it on RU-vid very shortly!
I love some of those, especially the Private Secretary ad that mentions St. Elsewhere being canceled. TV Land is where I first saw (and quickly grew to cherish) St. Elsewhere.
God I miss old school Nick at Nite. Feel that Viacom could start a classic NIck at Nite called Nick at Nite black and white showing only clasic black and white tv and in the old school Nick at Nite promos. I miss the 20th century
In 1985, Nickelodeon began its "Nick At Nite" service, which initially aired Monday through Friday from 8pm(et) to 6am(et), focusing on "classic TV", starting with "THE DONNA REED SHOW", "MR. ED" and "MY THREE SONS". By 1995, it had expanded into a full-fledged "sub-channel" (every night), with dozens of "classic TV" comedies [and some dramas]. This led to "TV Land" in April 1996; by 2000, most of Nick's "classic TV" lineup was slowly replaced by more "contemporary" ones....these days- eh!
i remember being 11 years old and watching all of this in a ritalin haze night after night. that stuff may have not helped me in school but i remember these promos word for word.
I agree. They've been doing these mini-marathons of Roseanne and Andy Griffith lately. Oh, and western stuff like Bonanza and Gunsmoke in the afternoons. Let's get some more variety back into the channel.
This is the Nick at Nite I remember. These days, they show 1990s shows. Like they are that old. Sure, at the time, it was only a decade prior if they show episodes of 1970s shows, but still.
Exactly. They are showing the same shows that are on everywhere. These days it seems there are a handful of shows that are shown on every station and nothing else is aired. I don't understand how it all got so rotten in just 20 years.
Stratman2534 That is a fantastic idea. It would be just like the decades radio stations on XM Satellite Radio except it would be tv stations for each decade. If they put those on tv I would watch them.
I miss the days when Nick @ Nite played more than three shows. Why N@N thinks people want to watch the crap they play now is beyond me. Remember the cartoon Nick @ Nite promos from the early '90's? I'd love to find those again!
I loved NIck at Nite 30 years ago. (1988) I would always be sure to set my VCR so I could record shows to watch such as, Mr. Ed, My Three Sons and The Donna Reed Show at a later time.
The promo/lineup announcer is Wendell Craig, now heard these days introducing "THE CBS EVENING NEWS" on weekends; he was later succeeded by Bill St. James.
Ya I thought of that too, with their non actor sitcom show. And then the critics gave it to them good for not using real actors. And look how it is now..haha.
The fake news reports Nick At Nite had were called "Global Village News" I taped a special they did called "The 80's: Ten Years That Came In a Row" As soon as I can I'll get it on RU-vid!
I miss the old Nick at Nite! We really need a CLASSIC TV station!! Neither Nick at Nite nor TVLand are CLASSIC TV anymore. TCM is for CLASSIC MOVIES. Ted Turner should BUY all these old shows that Nick used to air back in the 80s and 90s and make TCT: Turner Classic Television! :) Hey, sounds like a GREAT idea!
People complained for years on their TVLand and Nicks websites to bring back all the old shows and make it like it was. They never listened or cared at all. But people kept on with petitions. I liked their old promos, they were creative and amusing, basically Nick@Nite and TVLand are were killed off. It will never be like it once was. Right now, in fact I'm thinking back to that funny My 3 Sons song they did. You all remember that? It was funny.
They didn't really make fun of the show. It was like when they did the my 3 sons song, some might say they were making fun of the show, but it really wasn't. The viewers would have been angry at them making fun of the classic old shows. But I agree their humor was different back then and funny too. Thats why people like watching their old promos too. They were creative and clean.
@jawbreakerjo You got that right! The closest they have to old skool Nick at Nite or TVLand now is Retro Television Network. (They even have the old touch-tone signal you would sometimes hear on Nick at Nite!)
I'm tired of niche channels abandoning programming they started with. Sci Fi, Nick at Nite, TV Land, Cartoon Network, Bravo. None of them resemble the channels I originally loved! I know you can get the shows on DVD, but it's not the same. Miss the old programming!
he meant they weren't as conservative because they afraid to take RISKS back in the 80's. Now they stick with only shows that are guaranteed to be watched by huge amounts of people like That 70's Show and Friends-in other words, the same crap everyone else shows. But back in the 80's they weren't afraid to show marathons of Mr. Ed in prime time! And make fun of the fact that that was what they were showing. They had balls back then. Now it's just Friends, Friends, Friends...
That is NOT a contradiction in terms, but a fact. SOMEONE had to be the firstest with the mostest during the beginning of the medium. Like all great things, these shows have stood the test of time. Any one of these series is far better than this "Reality" dreck foisted on us today -- that goes for "American Idol" too.
Yeah, I can see the shows either in DVD or here on YT but it's not the same as it used to be with Nick and TV Land. They really celebrated the shows with the promos and other stuff. Plus, I always prefer catching things on TV as others watch it at the same time rather than on demand. On demand feels hollow to me. Just not the same as watching late at night knowing so many others out there were watching at the same time.
It's just sad that television is no longer like this, anywhere. The fun promos, the hilarious commercials that stations like Nick at Nite and TV Land used to put on for us to enjoy. I must say that it was great to watch television back then. Now it's all about people trying too hard to sell their product. The quality has greatly worsened since this 1988 promo was put out. The commercials, the tv stations, the shows, most of them all suck. Venture capitalism got the better of television.
These promos were great. I remember they used to have these great specials, like 'First and Last' which showcased first and last episodes of a series, or Stars come out at Nick at Nite, which presented episodes where famous stars from other shows appeared earlier in their careers. I recall Henry Winkler (the Fonz) in a Mary Tyler Moore episode. Yup, these Nick at Nite clips bring back so many great memories of staying up late with buddies to catch Get Smart, Hogan's Heroes, MTM, and so many others. Having them all on Hulu just isn't the same as watching it with others around the country. We lost something special when we got 'on demand'. I think people know it, but don't realize it. I miss TNT, Sci-Fi Channel, TV Land (which took the baton after Nick starting showing Rosanne constantly) and the old AMC with hosts. TV used to be great, indeed. Don't even get me started on MTV. At least there's MeTV and Antenna TV now. Wish I could get them here in Japan.
Yup, they totally ruined it and loyal viewers would watch the old shows over and over again. I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes seeing the old promos and thinks how life was then, and misses it.
This was around the time when it first started (give or take a year). Nickelodeon didn't really have any evening programming in the early 80s (I think you got the multi-colored bar thing at around 7 pm until 7 am); then along comes Nick at Nite! Yay! Loved watching those reruns of "My Three Sons" and "Mr. Ed." Now all I see, unfortunately, is "Fresh Prince" and "George Lopez". Luckily there's TV Land now.
I love those kind like the one at 1:46. I still remember "Your boss is a butthead. The sun is a dying star. Car 54 can help." "Ooh! Ooh!" I loved the original N@N and TVLand. They used to be great channels. Now they suck wind like every other channel.
Yeah, I personally think this is a major factor of why so many people are not happy - there's no unifying show or activity that we all can share. I fly a lot and even though the in-flight selections are vast, I prefer it the old way, where we all shared the experience of watching the movie together. Those were my favorite times flying. Just like in movie theater, as opposed to a bus station with everyone staring at their own gadget.
lol! I used to watch N@N about every night back when there was My Three Sons, Mister Ed, Donna Reed, Car 54, all in a row. And I remember right before a show, N@N had that dude who put together his living room and turning on the tv always something funny happened. Doesn't seem like much now a days, wasn't even much back then I guess but I'd still like to see more of those.
According to Viacom's Nick @ Nite information page. Nick @ Nite is trying to aim their programming choices towards men and women around the age ranges of 18 through 49.
@trapadoored I did post it about three years ago but RU-vid took it down after a few months because of copyright infringement. I'm thinking about contacting Viacom to see if they will let me repost it.

@xlogold Oh sure. I know very well. And miss them very much. I was just surprised to see someone make a political connection to it, whether by programming or ownership of stations. So what do you mean by more conservative today? Less crazy? In that case, I agree. But if people don't like how TV used to be great and now sucks, look no further than Viacom, owned by Sumner Redstone who is responsible for the major changes. When Ted Turner ran TNT, it was 100% better, too.
If you think about it, the late 80's when nick at night started was looking back to the mid 60's. Right now, the same time frame is the mid 80's, basically when NIck at Nite started. I agree about George Lopez, he sucks bad, he's a token in my opinion.
