In a new episode of VICE Meets, we sit down with Nick Cave to talk about the release of his new book, The Sick Bag Song.
The book was written by Cave as he and the Bad Seeds undertook a mammoth tour of 22 cities across America, and in it you can feel all the exhaustion, romantic longing, musings, memories, and moments of significance such a marathon entails. It's an epic poem, written-quite literally, on sick bags-in the manner of The Wasteland meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Here, on an empty airplane, VICE's John Doran talks to Cave about his wife, his home, and his childhood, the "dreaded" act of songwriting, and his artistic influences-from American poet John Berryman, right through to the Bible.
Cave's book will be available exclusively from www.thesickbagsong.com, in all kinds of special editions and formats.

why is Nick Cave such a sweet soul? Like i've been fan of his music but this is the first time i've seen an interview of him. He looks at the interviewer straight in the eyes when he's talking, pays attention and everything he responds is so interesting to me. "there is nothing behind the mask" my favorite part hands down.

you should watch the german documentary about his time living in Berlin. tells so much more about actually him than this. this video feels like a typical aging rockstar interview, especially with the new "book"

Hahaha i don't get this comment section. "Self indulgent" and "egotistic" and "talking about himself" thrown around left and right. The only part where that was true was when John started talking about how he too had written a book, but as for nick cave coming of as egotistic and self indulgent? Uuuh, well, it is an interview with him isn't it? Where he's supposed to talk about himself and his new project? But man why haven't i blocked youtube comments yet? Say what you will about Nick Cave but give him credit for working endlessly since he began his career in the late seventies early eighties and at times produced some seriously great work and don't take my word for it because the people who approve of his work know more about what makes it good than those who negatively criticise it. It seems to some degree that he's aware of and plays off of the myth and legend that precedes him, to satisfy the fans and to annoy the anti-cavers. (Note: "seems")

The comments section is gold, lot of pretentious holier than thou crap about this being too egoistic/self-indulgent, while doing the exact same thing themselves in their comments. Sans egoism you learn to understand other peoples views or just avoid and ignore them, fighting ego with ego doesn't achieve much. (I realise the irony in my own post's intent but I think that just serves to prove the point ;)). Some of you thankfully are not really that closed-minded and are just echoing other peoples comments without realising it, and to those of you I'd just recommend actually listening to the video rather than the comments. Personally I think it's nice that occasionally an artist can actually sit down and have a proper talk about their ideas, where they came from, and how it relates to them and their lives, as opposed to just answering 2-3 of your own pre-prepared questions, spending another 10 minutes using cliché catchphrases to plug any and every product you've ever released. Nice one Nick ;)

The man is one of history's greatest poets. Most of our bands inspiration is rooted from Nick's work. Story telling lyrics with the musical tone of post punk and God condemned country ballads. Southern nights cursed by storm clouds that baptize good folks in the ink of sinners. Without him and the Bad Seeds, the modern Folk Noir movement might not exist.

Nick is a vampire. Anyone from Australia will tell you, there is no place to hide from the sun here. Nick was born into an uninhabitable land for one such as himself. He had to move either south or north away from the equator. There is just more land in the north.

Ignoring the fuckton of astounding songs and written words in this guy's catalog, he is still a million times cooler than any of us can ever hope to be just for those one or two scenes from Get In The Van. Save for a few spot-on remarks, the comment section here reads like the twitter feed of some waffle house waitress from a Bill Hicks joke. Learn the difference between British and Australian, egotistic and revelatory. At least then your criticisms will sound intelligent.

So much strife in the comments for this video. I think Nick Cave can come across, to some people, as being arrogant. Me, I don't know what he's really like and I don't see why it should matter. All I know is he has written many songs that have touched me in some way or another. I've been listening to Push The Sky Away a lot lately. There's so much in there, it's a great album IMO.

+MadsAndersen1 to me its because hes well educated and he uses alot of big words that some of the commenters here wish they knew what they ment. im a big fan of nick cave and ive seen a few of his interviews this one was interesting but ive seen better tbh. ive read a reasonable amount of his work and been a fan of his for years. so i just think these guys are silly trolls that clearly came here to start a war, with no intention to learn or maybe even try to enjoy themselves

An interview is self indulgent at it's core. It's the only social situation where your obligation to the interviewer and audience is to talk about yourself, you are the focus. You could argue that any participant in an interview is an egotistical narcissist.

Very true, which is why a lot of people hate doing interviews and waxing on about themselves. A lot of artists just have to stomach doing interviews for the publicity it gived.
