How can anyone ask if its a Cohen cover? Listen to lyrics, its obviously a song about Nick's struggles with the temptations of drugs. Genius song by a lyrical genius.
That end chorus... Every single song on this album is like a movie being played in my head !! Been a fan since the Birthday Party days , and not one album has left me dissapointed , not one !
This concert footage (from "God Is In The House") is great. The only missing aspect from this is the voices of Kate & Anna McGarrigle - that outro still wrecks me.
Oh, God, what an absolutely gorgeous song - Warren's violin is other-wordly perfect, as always, setting the scene for Nick's story - of redemption or damnation - sung in that voice that is Nick Cave. Beautiful video.
Somebody asked what DVD this particular performance is from...it's not The abattoir blues tour...it's from the DVD 'God is in the house'... performed in Lyon, France. A must have DVD for any Cave fan!
Last night I had a vision of a young woman with golden blonde hair and snow white angel wings sitting on a cushioned seat in the cove of a large bay window. It was the dark of night. She was looking over her shoulder at the rain coming down as droplets streamed down the windowpane. In her eyes I saw a look that said 'Will this rain ever stop falling?" I have had schizophrenia for about 9 years now. It's a very depressing affliction. I wish I could say I had more visions that captured such beauty. It's only every once in a while. Anyways it made me think of the words in this song. Dark night of the soul...
@@cubeb3 thanks man. appreciate it. this song, children and jubilee street, mercy seat are my favorites. so intense and visually poetic. children is about the trains to auschitz and the gas chambers. one of the saddest songs ive ever heard

he was never a junkie...believe me, he lived with some who were, dabbled a bit, knew the emotion of it all..but he? no....an image, an actor, a good one , but an actor non the less
My dear, there is NOTHING bisare in this, it's on the contrary very concrete: A broken man who is not able to have a partner and who is vegetating in this world and a contrast of it and a song of joy. "Where is a vine, new vine, where is a feast we were promised?" Morrison, An American Prayer
but no cohen, bowie, cash, dylan or any other songwriter was or will be as good as nick... never ever... later, when he sings to the devil in hell, even the devil gets depressed...
