Peep Show is one of the best comedy shows ever, the cringe moments had me wanting to crawl out of my skin. I've had to stop it many times just because I was so filled with secondhand embarrassment. No other show has effected me in that manner.

one of the best british comics is stewart lee, and he'll never cross over because his humor doesn't really work in america and it doesn't seem like he gives a shit about appealing to an american audience

Frankie Boyle and Hugh Dennis on scenes we'd like to see on mock the week were on par with the best US standup comics, it's just british humour is better for ad libs and quips and conversations and people who go on a little detour are seen as bores, but US comics are better at (extremely hilarious) monologues

A lot of it is class-based, yes. "Dirty guy in fancy setting" is kinda lame though. The most popular is "lower-middle trying to be upper-middle". (The US equivalent is Andre's Steakhouse: dumb guy trying to be entrepreneurial by misusing fancy words.) Fawlty Towers and Keeping up Appearances (Nick's favorite show for some reason) are all about the class system, and how pathetic people are when they attempt to climb up to a higher class.

I recommend "Jaaaam", the remixed version of "Jam". But yeah, Jam is so good Stereolab made a song based on it. The first time I heard the lyrics I was like "wait what the FUCK? I know what this is!" The plumbing/baby skit is really the final word when it comes to dead baby jokes. Morris just takes human despair, adds a very creepy atmosphere, and turns it into comedy gold.

Each to their own, but both were like cult successes here, didn't really get much of a large audience. If we're gonna go Cult comedy, it's got to be Garth Marenghi's dark place. Overall though, I'd say Peep Show and The Office are undeniable.
