On December 17, 1969, Johnny Carson hosted the marriage of Tiny Tim to Miss Vicky in NYC on The Tonight Show. "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" was the nostalgic hit that launched Tiny Tim's career. It was originally recorded in 1929 by Nick Lucas. Being a big fan of Lucas, Tim asked that Carson invite Lucas on the program, and here he sings "Looking at the World Through Rose Colored Glasses" and "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" backed by that great Tonight Show Band and then talks about his long career and his long marriage.

What a pro! Singer, actor, band leader, highly talented guitarist, multi-instrumental musician. He plied his trade for 40 years on stage, screen and recording studio. He just strolls on here at age 72 and effortlessly knocks out the songs with a totally clear voice like he was taking a stroll in the park. He was from an era when to be a star you really had to have talent and dedication to your craft.

Truly amazing to see a performance 52 years later of a guy who was one of the biggest singing stars of the 1920s. And at age 72 he was still singing like a pro. He's also the first singer to have a Gibson guitar named after him.

He didn't look at the fretboard once!! I've been playing for over 25 years now and I can't play that cleanly, and some of those chords he frets are nuts!! An amazing guitarist that nobody talks about.

I first heard about Nick Lucas today, he was a pioneer on the guitar and is woefully under appreciated. He has a massive discography and his version of "Tiptoe though the Tulips" recorded in 1929 was a million seller. nicklucas.com/biography.html

It's the type of great guitar playing that only people who have tried to truly play the guitar would understand. The non-musicians think that someone noodling a mindless shred solo on an electric is good guitar playing. Nick Lucas was fantastic

I always knew that Tiny Tim did a revival version of "Tiptoe..." that went way back to the 1920s, but was not aware of who was the original person to sing it, until today. Nick Lucas was such an inspiration. He deserved much more recognition.

It originated from a 1929 movie, The Gold Diggers of Broadway, which is lost. The entire audio still exists, but only a few footages have been found. One of those footages is the original version of Tip-Toe Thru' The Tulips With Me, sung by Nick Lucas and chorus. The footage exists on RU-vid. There's also a footage which i believe is the ending of the movie. The ending scene is a big musical number which includes many of the songs from the movie; Song Of The Gold Diggers (the production number), Painting The Clouds With Sunshine (the other big hit of the movie, which isn't as popular as the other one), Mechanical Man (a comedy song long forgotten), and this song. Tiny Tim's other popular song, Livin' In The Sunlight, originated in a movie from 1930.

Nick was a solid stylist and performer vocally and on the guitar. An old pro entertainer and a major populizer of pop/jazz guitar. I'm glad Tiny Tim brought Nick, his inspiration, on the Tonight Show. Nick was charming as well. Johnny might well have taken some marital advice from Old Nick. ;)

Despite being mostly lost one of the few scenes left of the movie from 1929 is Lucas playing the original version of this song. I like this version better though. Not a fan of the style of singing from the 20s, feels too theatrical. Which I suppose it should since the scene is of Lucas playing in a musical. He's playing the same guitar as in 1929 as far as i can tell.

jason bailey No slight on Mr. Lucas but if it wasn't for Tiny Tim I doubt people would have known who he was in the late 60's and beyond. Yes Tiny Tim turned "Tiptoe thru the tulips" into a joke but at the same time he also turned it into one of the most well known songs ever. Not bad for a guy who was taking a piss at the song. ;)

Well, the part about this model guitar's importance is only my opinion, (based on my opinion of the two highly different artists who used it). If you find it funny, so be it. However, Gibson -did- make a "Nick Lucas" model guitar, Patton -did- play one & -is- holding in it in his best-known pictures. If you find -that- funny, then I guess truth is funnier than fiction.
