Elsewhere, Pileggi spoke about the ironies surrounding Rosenthal, about how he didn't believe in long shots, yet he married one and he didn't believe in luck, yet luck is what saved him when the bomb detonated in his car!

This is my favorite Scorsese film. People don’t realize how big and powerful the Chicago outfit had and displayed. They owned Vegas even more than NYC. They made so much money. No matter what people say from the 50’s up until Vegas days the outfit was the most powerful. Yes more than Gambinos or Genovese. Just because they are big doesn’t mean they had more power. There’s a reason why JFKs father and the CIA went to Giancana for things and not Carlo or Vito. However when Vegas came crumbling down that’s when NYC took that title from Chicago.

The ny commission was undoubtedly the most powerful mafia enterprise ever, especially during that time. Ny was in Vegas too. Ny started vegas!!! It's just that when Atlantic City had gambling legalized Accardo went to commission and proposed Chicago take Vegas and they will stay out of A.C. and the commission agreed. Vegas wasn't what it is today and Atlantic City was suppose to be same thing. Anyway brilliant move by Accardo. To me in researching the mob for a long time Tony Accardo and Carlo Gambino are the 2 best that ever did it

Pileggi's late wife Nora Ephron was also a writer and penned the screenplay "My Blue Heaven" with Steve Martin. While Pileggi interviewed Henry Hill gertting his life story for the book "Wiseguy", Ephron listened extensively to his ex-wife Karen's amazing, funny anecdotes about mob life from her perspective. These stories provided the inspiration for her comedic script.

So, you have an FBI informant running a casino for the Outfit, a high end escort who mostly loved money and excitement, and a power hungry gangster in Spilotro.....yeah, I'm surprised that triangle lasted as long as it did. Murray "The Camel" Humphrey (Welsh), Gus Alex (Greek) and Ken Ito (Japanese) are 3 members of note. Also, the Chicago Outfit didn't control Vegas. At the time, Vegas was considered an open city so any mobster could operate there as long as their business didn't affect what the Midwest Bosses ( Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Kansas City) were doing with the skim.
