I've been playing go for a a little under a year now, and I've skimmed a few books, done plenty of tsumego, but I'm only 5 minutes into this lecture so far and I feel like you've taught me at least 5 important lessons I'd never known before this. im going back to watching the video now but i just thought you should know what a fantastic job you're doing here
Hi, Nick. I'm glad I found your lectures. I know the primary purpose of Go is to play against others (after all it is a game), but I prefer to analyze games, especially those of the masters. Your analyses of games between both amateurs and pros is quite enlightening. Thank you for sharing your perspective and expertise.
I am just beginning to learn go. I have been pretty confused about opening ideas and main strategic ideas. Thank you so much for this video. Using at least a minutes or two to go over each individual move and the ideas that follow it was very helpful.

I know that you're a guy but seriously ILU. The moment you said "boxes" for the first time, 2 years of my life learning this game just fell into place. I've honestly never understood Go strategy until today, until this video and for that I have to say THANK YOU! I just kept asking myself why i was failing so hard. Played online, played computer, bought a board and played friends and I kept losing and I didn't understand WHY! I've read books, studied games, asked for help from my friends and et voila *one word* makes this all make sense.
I'm right there with ya. I gave up and quit playing for over 10 years because losing every game and not understanding what I was supposed to learn from it just got really frustrating. It helps when you have someone explaining things to you in a way that makes sense. Hopefully I can learn enough to actively improve my game this time around.

i just learned about this game. i just love the face how much interpretation goes into the first move. Player one plops a stone down and it seems to be the most awesome thing. And I'm just sitting here, wondering what the hell is going on....
@CandidlySubtle he is using the KGS CGoban client, which has a built in SGF editor. You can download SGF files of various games on the server directly from the archive on the website, then load them up on the CGoban client and review them yourself or with others.
i know Burton!! when i was around 13kyu he played a few games with me and helped me out!! hes a really good guy and one of the few people whos name i recognize right away
I have this weird problem when playing go where I look at the opponents move and read it out a bit, then go "hmm, that's interesting. I wonder how they'll play it out if I let them get away with it." It costs me many games, but it's entertaining :D
I'm a super super super beginner player. My bf is 7k on go panda and I'm trying to get into it but I'm still learning all of the terms and trying to recognize moves. I'm just curious if anyone could recommend beginner tutorials/videos? I watch a lot of Nick's videos with my bf. I love the games him and Andrew play against each other, but I have trouble following/comprehending every thing because it's above my level. >_
+Kyrae Jenkins It's above all of our heads haha. After you look at this website you should be able to follow Nicks most basic Go videos. Maybe look at Nicks videos on the beginning of the game.
Oh man, when they start playing bad moves around 34:00 I was dying of laughter at your commentary. As a 15kyu, it's good to know even 5kyus have trouble in normal situations.
Awesome video. I am a new player and these lectures have really provided some beneficial insight. I was wondering, what program do you use to play online with other players? I am interested in doing that, but I wasn't sure which program to use.
for the down left part, what if black plays f-3 instead of jumping to corner? it seemed like the best move to me because white's potential will decrease badly, what do you think?
at 12:56? Following the main line joseki on eidogo from F3, it seems to me that variation doesn't do as well on the bottom side as the joseki C3 that Nick showed. In either case, it seems the white stones will end up playing nicely with the three on line 9, which makes me think B11 should already have been C3.
When I setup my board I had labeled the board 1 to 19 and then A to S, I included the letter "I" and not the letter "T". Does that mean I have a better chance of making I's then my opponents?

Or should i look for some Go clubs/meetings near where i live? OR something completely different? So all in all I mean what´s the best way to start with Go?
Infinite Creations I'm only 5kyu but I'd say just play a ton of games online and in person if possible. Read books when you have free time and aren't playing until you get stuck at a certain rank, then maybe focus some more on reading. play your first 100 games as soon and fast as possible. :)
John Arenas You mean "LOOSE your first 100 games as soon and fast as possible" haha, I heared that somewhere before xD I will try my best, but noone of my friends knows GO :C ...but i read somewhere that near my town there is a kind of a "Club" (nor really a real club, more just a weekly fun-meeting) where people meet once a week to Play. Maybe I will try to go there sometime.

Hello Nick, I don't know why you said white was wrong when white plays on 4th line on the upper side, It's not just about making eyes, this is a common sense that 3rd line seek for cash, while 4th line seek for potential territories also, black play on 2nd line to steal the eyes of white is irrational move at all...it will just help white to build a wall affecting the middle, which is much more valuable then what black gain under 2nd line, and also fit the strategies of white since he, or she played the double stars opening...
Funny how you say that Q4 is in the "correct" corner, when many top pros play the star point in the opposite corner. Both are good moves. It's really hard to say that one is better than the other.
I love to switch it up with lower kyo players 😂 play Tengen at the start if im first or second.. throws their trail of thought off.. higher kyo or Dan players know how to reply but funny to see thier reaction lol
I'll be honest I have never actually played a game of Go myself outside of a little 9x9 board app and don't even own a set but I've read about some of the concepts and am intrigued. This could just be my ignorant opinion but it seems like Black just lacked fighting spirit in this game and played a lot of scared moves when he could have cut White off at the knees at multiple points. That could have made all the difference in he world given in this game White won on the komi bonus.
Yes but you cannot be an insei in Japan past age 23. Adults are free to take the pro exam but cannot study as insei. And there are now American professionals so it seems more likely that you would be able to become a pro here instead of in East Asia. I would not recommend trying to become a professional unless your AGA rank is around 4-dan or 5-dan, or if you're a 9-dan on KGS.
LolSpecLol I don't know much about go, but if you are simply an amazing player even without being an insei, couldn't you be a pro at any age? If someone else sees your talent in action and sponsors you, does it really matter if you studied or not?
Jvizzlezz LONG POST AHEAD! You aren't just born with amazing talent at Go, everyone who intends on becoming a professional needs to study diligently, it takes a lot of time and effort to become a professional, and no you don't need to become an insei to become a professional in Japan, in fact you can only be an insei up to age 23 or 25 (18 if you're Japanese, Chinese, or Korean) but you can continue to take the pro exam until you're 30. Basically you won't get strong in Go and get sponsored unless you 1) play constantly 2) study constantly 3) generally, learn the game early in life, sometimes there are exceptions to this. 4) review your games with stronger players 5) take lessons from dan level players and professionals You'll want to try to sit in on as many lectures on KGS by professional players as possible, maybe even pay for some private lessons. It takes most insei years in the program before they actually pass, and the overwhelming majority will not in fact pass. As I've stated, now that the AGA has their own professional system, it seems likely that path would be the easiest for an American or Canadian intending on becoming a professional Go player, however it will still take considerable skill to pass even via the AGA, as all 3 current AGA professionals would be 9-dan on KGS, and one of them actually was before he was promoted. You basically have to have what it takes to make it into the insei program's B league at the very least if you want any chance of passing here in America however. If you want my advice, and you're sincere in your desire to become a professional, I suggest you keep studying until you reach around 3-dan to 5-dan on KGS, then head over to South Korea or China and spend some time studying under professionals over there. In the mean time, there is an amateur insei league on the KGS server ran by Alexander Dinerchtein 3p from the Korean Go Assocation, which would be certainly worth your time and would be great for getting strong in Go. Alexander also offers private lessons for a price, which can be found on his website or his KGS profile called breakfast. If you do go to China or South Korea like I said, two schools that I myself am looking at for attending are as follows: China - Guo Juan's Go School/Exchange program, just look up "Guo Juan study in China" on Google and you'll find it. South Korea - Blackie's International Baduk Academy, ran by a 9-dan professional in South Korea, it's a very good school and is a bit more than Guo Juan's school, but both are worth the money and the trip. Be warned, they're rather expensive, as you would expect from a trip to Asia. The prices can be found on both their websites, and their websites are relatively easy to find, let me know if you have any problems finding them or if you have further questions.

15:50, you said black won't let white take the bottom left territory to his/herself. shudnt we call white a her, just because we're calling this game Go, meaning it's the japanese version..cuz black/white is kuro/shiro and shiro is a girl name
I disagree that 42:58 is that bad of a threat. White does not gain 2 points as 1 of the points was territory he was already going to get anyway and the other is the territory he lost by playing a stone in his own area to capture.
i gave up trying to learn go because it's a game not for everyone to learn sure losing 100% is somewhat a way to learn if you actually know what your doing wrong otherwise i'm not learning a thing. me you just know when something isn't for you lose interest and pick up something else. I call this hobby jumping.
@@thingthought9930 i can’t tell if there’s an increment but its a 25 minute game and they took 2 minutes each for the first 40 moves. Seems they made it a blitz!
