I'm guessing someone hit the wrong button and switched to a backup feed. Oh, and the dial tones at 0:24, IIRC, were a signal for the cable headend to cue the local advertising
That's a pretty interesting slide, looks more like a placeholder of some kind than an actual technical difficulties card. I wonder what kind of situation prompts a slide like that to be thrown up so suddenly, I'm also curious about the dial tones, if those were actually heard on air and weren't just part of the tape. Any possible explanation for this stuff?
fashionably late, but here to clarify the tones: they’re called “touch tones” or DMTF markers, and were used on American cable networks in the 80s to allow local cable providers to insert advertisements on the channel feed. if you look up “silver ball” era Nick idents (pre-1984) and do some searching around you can find plenty of examples with the tones. more generally, they’re a cue, or signal that some preset automation should kick in (the Wikipedia page for sign on/sign off sequences says touch tones can switch transmitters on/off, but like many things on that page it’s an unsourced claim). I’ve seen more recent examples of these being used in Russian radio, where multiple time zones and a wide geographic range are a prominent problem - DTMF markers allow for stations there to more easily switch to local news or ad output, and are embedded into jingles so as to be inconspicuous: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rbjA3a8eUyA.html
0:24 The DTMF signal to me sounds like 14#7. That’s strange. It sounds similar to the usual local lead-out signal 147#. Why are the tones in the second half of the sequence switched? 1:44 This one sounds like 14##. What’s with these strange signals?
Now that you're a bigger channel, it would be cool if you could reopen your Discord so that viewers could submit stuff to be uploaded to this channel. I'm surfing the Internet Archive all the time, and I've got experience with... other parts of the web where this kind of content can be found. And I doubt I'm the only one. Just a thought, your content is amazing :D
That was the plan for it to just be a submission place, but I kept turning it into a full-fledged server and then it became a spam fest with barely any actual conversations happening, which I wasn't happy about. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, next week, next month, I dunno. Also thank you, glad your enjoying the content.
