When you realize how big Viacom is and you also realize that Spongebob accounts for 5% of revenue (not of Nick, but of Viacom). You understand why they have no incentive to stop producing more episodes even if it means a quantity over quality. The reason why Nick feels different today is because their content used to cater to all ages where even my older brother could watch drake and josh, icarly or spongebob and be engaged, but now their tv content is solely catered to children and that "charm" it had in it's effort to appeal to an audience of all ages is substituted with content that's more digestable and easier to understand for children. Children are profitable, and nothing spells this out more when a kids toy channel on youtube is making the most money.

Mason Bee I would agree with that. I remember I stopped watching Nickelodeon around 8th/9th grade (14/15 years old). I would have quit earlier but I had a little sister who liked the reality shows and I watched iCarly because I had a giant crush on Miranda Cosgrove. Watching Nickelodeon got replaced with watching youtube, unlimited access to video games and posting on forums. I look at my five little cousins now, who are all boys between 8 and 15 years old, and not a single one besides the 8 year old even watches an hour of TV. They watch youtube, post on social media, play video games instead. And it's not like when I did it at their age, where I had to go to a different room and get on the family computer if no-one else was using it. They can do all of it on their phones, the family computer, or their school-issued laptop in addition to the main TV. There are just too many things competing for their attention now to sit and watch TV uninterrupted. Another thing to consider is the all ages appeal. I used to be able to watch shows with my little sister because they made them have jokes and appealing aspects for middle school aged me too. We could both watch Fairly Odd Parents or Drake and Josh and laugh at it. Sometimes my parents would come over and watch an episode and they generally liked it too. My dad loved Drake and Josh and Hey Arnold. With Nickelodeon's current focus, there are so many fewer shows that have that age transcending appeal. I've tried watching some current shows with my youngest cousin and didn't like it. Same with my dad when we were with him this Thanksgiving. It's a shame, because Nickelodeon brought siblings, and sometimes parents, in my family together to watch their shows when I was growing up. Now it can't capture that magic anymore. Whether it's market changes, platform competition or their production decisions, it's a little sad to see something I loved as a kid turn into something mediocre.

@@Anderino I feel similarly. Growing up in the early-mid 2000s my go to channel was Cartoon Network and I watched almost everything they had to offer as well. Shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd n Eddy, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack and others were classic masterpieces that both me and my parents could enjoy. However, by 2007-2008 all of those shows that I grew up on were all but ending and being replaced by new shows I wasn't really interested in, and I had just discovered the internet and places like RU-vid around that time, and was more interested in video games and other shit, so I pretty much stopped watching TV all together. Sure, CN has had some good shows since then (Adventure Time, Young Justice, ect) but nothing that felt nostalgic to me. And looking at the channel now after all these years there's really nothing that captures the same all-ages appeal that they used to have, it's just trying to appeal to kids too young to use the internet yet, in a desperate attempt to keep cable TV alive. It's going the same direction Nickelodeon is going.

Actually even a lot of the "newer" stuff appealed to adults as well. I actually watched the network up until I was about... 22? 23? I forget... Anyway, around then shows like iCarly were coming to an end, and the newer stuff just didn't appeal to me. Going back to watch early seasons of iCarly is kinda hard for me, but the later seasons of the show was filled with things that would go over kid's heads. It died when the classic Nickelodeon cartoon series were not being shown anymore on their prime time segments. Shows like Doug, Rugrats, Ah Real Monsters. I still remember way back in 2003 and 2004 when people started talking about these shows that I had no idea about. I can safely say that the late 80s and early to mid 90s was pure Nickelodeon for me. It was around the mid-2000s that I knew that Nickelodeon had died for me and I was no longer the target audience (I was in my early 20s in the mid-2000s).

Yeah, I remember when Nick was fun and low-budget and they could slip in slightly edgier humor because nobody was paying attention. Salute Your Shorts really held up, in my opinion. Dated, but still funny as hell and it feels true to the way we actually acted and spoke unlike the newer shows which just feel weirdly slick and focus-grouped. A lot of the old shows are streamable now. Paramount Plus has several.
@huntercoleherr
@huntercoleherr Год назад
@@shadow_weaver That was still in the era where they just hired normal kids for shows. The budgets were so anemic that most shows just had kids wear their own clothes from home for wardrobe. Space Cases was probably their most ambitious show in terms of effects and even there, you'd see CDs just glued to a chair. They really had to stretch that budget. More modern Nick followed the Disney formula of grooming and raising kids for TV from birth, so it was a lot less relatable and a lot more wish-fulfillment.

I’ve actually gone back to watch some of the older cartoons on Nick and CN, and from what I’ve seen the quality has definitely faltered more than me just getting older. There’s still some new shows that are well animated, well written, and try to have a heart at times, but probably the biggest issue I have is their programming which for Nick is 70% Spongebob and for CN is 70% Teen Titans Go. The great ideas they show for at most a season and let them die in the background where there’s less viewership (essentially giving them the Chalk Zone/Teenage Robot treatment) and just rerunning a single show for most of their lineup. I don’t have much of a problem paying for cable again, but it’s stuff like this as to why I don’t see a reason why I would pay for something I can pick up for free with a hand-me-down antenna that gets more variety. Just like the music industry, there’s still good stuff being made today by talented people that audiences are asking for, the problem is that it’s being buried under all the regurgitated crap that makes it harder to find. Some have said in recent years that that kind of management is done by design to keep costs low by supplying the bare minimum, but it ruins the product as a whole regardless and hurts the franchise. Whether or not that’s the case for Nick, I do know that reruns of Spongebob for most of the programming schedule is an easy way to induce fatigue of the brand.
@Hamburgers4Haiti

It amazes me that Spongebob has done that since it hasn't been good since the movie when the creator retired. The first half of Season 4 was alright, I think they were still using some of the old writing points they had sidelined, but it was noticeable when it changed. I like to point specifically at "The Best Day Ever" episode as the truest start of the downfall. First three seasons are the only truly amazing Spongebob that created the shows initial popularity. Yet somehow, regurgitating mediocrity for 500 seasons or so since instead of letting the show end when it should have has proved profitable enough it seems. It's a damn shame since that seems to be one of the top reasons for Nick's creative decline, but at least we can always go back and rewatch the golden age of these networks.

The only way Nick has declined is the quality of the shows. The channel itself is really successful, but the shows only appeal to schmucks without brains and literal toddlers. Also, SpongeBob itself has made at least $13B from merchandising alone, meaning it’s made at least 5% of Viacom’s total revenue since 1999. That doesn’t even include revenue made from the popularity of the show itself. They’re keeping it around and are not unsuccessful in that regard.
@Legoluke197
@Legoluke197 4 года назад
And all of their older franchises that were running strong have been turned into lifeless cash cows that are shells of their former selves (ie Spongebob). Or they add in unnecessary extras that tank the show to cancellation. FOP is a prime candidate of this. I may be in the minority, but I thought poof was a logical next step in the fairy family dynamic. However, Sparky was mostly added as a comedic relief character...of which we already had timmy's dad and cosmo -- one for each of timmy's "families". Chloe was stated as being added as a female foil to timmy...except the smart choice to do would have been to expand on either trixie or tootie's character. I could go on for quite some time like this but you get my point.

Nickelodeon got bad for me around 2007, with lack of variety. The product has been stagnant in my opinion. Nick used to be entertaining for me and my parents to watch. Sponge-Bob doesn’t hurt Nick financially, it just hinders the product because the show is a cash cow based on how successful it was in the early seasons. With the focus more on Sponge-Bob, their quality of other animated shows took a hit. For an Example: I can go back (as a later teen) and watch Regular Show, Adventure Time, Rugrats, or even Invader Zim. Those shows still had an edge to them that bridged the gap between generations. They weren’t just aimed at kids, which meant almost anyone could watch it, which also made it a better show in my opinion. Nick just doesn’t have shows like that anymore, which is why it’s so sad to see their reputation decline. As a company I don’t think they’re doing bad, but as a product they’ve lost a good portion of their audience by targeting only one group instead of many. Idk if this comment makes sense but hopefully it does

If you take a closer look at Nick you'll find that many of their shows suffered from behind the scenes issues, often as a result of the network. There are numerous cases of shows throughout the 90's and 2000's that got screwed over by them, good and bad alike. And once Spongebob became their undisputed cash cow franchise they started focusing on how many ratings a show could draw in right away, and anything that didn't automatically get the same kind of viewing the sponge got in his prime was deemed a failure.

“The Angry Beavers” is the greatest animated show of all time. To go along with your question though, I think you’re on point showing how hard it is for cable to compete in the Internet age, particularly with so much content available on demand. I do think you’re also onto something with the creative stagnation angle, but honestly since we can’t see their numbers broken out I have to assume the network is being managed to maximize profitability and lack of creativity may go hand in hand with that. I feel like the last truly respected shows on Nickelodeon were iCarly and Victorious, whereas when it comes to cartoons its probably Avatar the Last Airbender or Danny Phantom. The Legend of Korra was respected when it came out but has had pretty mixed reception, the creators put a lot of heart into the show despite it being rushed. TLOK which I remember seeing in my mid teens as it aired on TV was weirdly not marketed very heavily and eventually it only aired on Nicktoons for some reason. Not sure why they would push back one of their most beloved universes like that. As a kid Nickelodeon was always my favorite, but I remember as a teenager around the time they stopped making good shows Cartoon network was on the rise with some fantastic shows of their own that also appealed to an older teenage demographic. Adventure Time, Regular Show, and The Amazing World of Gumball, even Total Drama Island were all great shows. Not to mention miniseries like Over the Garden Wall. Later Steven Universe would rise though I never fully got into it but it also played into the big teenage demographic. Infinity train also looks promising though it only starting airing recently and ive only seen the previews. Otherwise when it comes to nickelodeon i feel like they just haven't kept up making beloved iconic, or memorable shows and Cartoon Network definitely took the crown through the 2010s.

Ideas to improve Nickelodeon (note: these are off the top of my head, so they may not be well thought out)... 1.) The first thing I'd say to do would be to put a few more animated shows/cartoons (at least 2 or 3) on the air alongside Spongebob. Note: these shows need to be given an actual chance when it comes to airing. Don't air a show once or twice and expect it to be a hit immediately. 2.) Try not to show favoritism for any specific genre of show. When I say this, I'm talking about not showing favoritism for live action shows over animated; I'd definitely advise having an equal amount of action, comedy, and other kinds of shows on the network too. I know it may be easy to make every show comedic or look to a chart to see what makes the most $$$, but everyone (kids, teens, and adults) has different tastes, and just because something appears to be performing well, doesn't mean it is (or will be) well loved by your audience. 3.) This may be similar to #2, but it'd be nice if Nickelodeon became more experimental. They seem to be playing it safe more often than not, and it's not difficult to notice either. Change may look stupid or even horrifying to a network that may be doing alright financially, but being experimental can potentially lead to more success if given a chance. End Note:) Big thanks to anyone who took the time to read this. 🙂

Can I add something maybe? Your analysis is super well thought out. I would add “don’t lack in intelligence with the cartoons,” because most of the shows on Nick are for toddlers and only one show (the loud house) has actual morals and intelligent characters. They try so hard to be cool, saying hashtags and making characters do the floss. They should just try to be like Rugrats or Drake and Josh and just make the characters act their age. Can you imagine Angelica and Susie doing the floss? No because they act like actual little kids and not like adults.

"And that raises the question we should all ask ourselves: Did the shows really get lazy and worse over the years, or have I just seen them differently as I've gotten older?" I like this this quote. Nostalga can be a tricky thing. There's a number of old cartoons I use to watch I've revisited thanks to streaming services and went 'wait... I really used to watch this?' Some of them have stood the test of time (I still enjoyed the early seasons of Rugrats and Hey Arnold). Others not so much (this will probably piss some people off, but I tried to watch the Invader Zim movie and found myself more annoyed by its humor than anything. Same with the Rocko movie). It's never as clean cut as 'old is good, new is bad'. You also have to factor in changing generations and taste. What kids liked years ago probably aren't the same as today. (Ever noticed how many toys are shoehorning smartphone support in an attempt to remain relevant?) While I don't know enough about modern Nick to form a strong opinion, there's no denying what they're doing is apparently working for them. If there truly was a massive drop off of some kind, the network likely would have gone under by now thanks to the rise of streaming services.

This couldn't be more true. A prime example of this would be gross-out humor, something that was extremely prevalent throughout the 90s, but is almost universally hated today. While I like many old Nicktoons, I firmly believe that very few, if any of them would actually succeed today (seriously, imagine a show like Ren and Stimpy airing today, or even Invader Zim). Times change, and with that do peoples' tastes.

I don't feel nostalgia, so let me answer this for you. Out of all the shows that have aired on Nickelodeon, the only shows that stand the test of time are Spongebob (seasons 1-3), The Fairly Odd Parents (the first season. Maybe others, but mainly the first), and Hey Arnold. People will be quick to say that we grew up, but they're part of the reason why shows are getting so bad. They think, "Kids don't know what they want! Look at all the garbage we watched! Look at all the garbage kids are watching now!" Well, first of all, we didn't have any other options, and kids today are choosing their other options. Most of the hit TV shows that Nickelodeon had were when Cartoon Network was still in its infancy, if not pre-infancy. There are countless more shows from cartoon network that stand the test of time. The Powerpuff Girls (the original), Dexter's Lab (until it got weird), Foster's Home, Johnny Bravo (season 1), and I just watched a livestream of Ed, Edd 'n Eddy. It was still entertaining! Plus, Cartoon Network had shows that filled those in-between times, the times when Toonami aired whereas Nickelodeon was showing reruns of Rocket Power. What about before Toonami? Well, Kids WB was showing Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh and Fox Kids was showing Digimon and One Piece. We KNEW the shows on Nickelodeon were bad, but when Summer came and we were stuck in the house, what else were we gonna watch in between seasons of Dragon Ball Z? Nowadays, kids have more options, and if a show sucks, they can easily find one that doesn't. The whole "kids will like anything" is a horrible mindset that companies are using to pump out crap. The real reason adults don't watch the shows they watched as kids is just that they never liked them in the first place. They just liked them better than anything else that was on at the time. The Wild Thornberries sucked. Rocket Power sucked. The Rugrats sucked. Catdog had good episodes, but the fact that it always ended with Cat being miserable made the show suck as a whole. Once we realize that there is such thing as a good cartoon, we can learn how to make more THAT DON'T SUCK.

Love Hey Arnold. Probably my favorite along with Doug. Dry is what made Doug brilliant though. It's so subtle and low-key funny. So many moments in that show are so much funnier now that I'm older (I'm 33 btw). The episode where they find out the chocolate bars actually have cement in them: "This chocolate tastes like cement! It IS CEMENT!" That cracked me up. And when Doug is trying to sell off the rest of them and he can't, some lady slams the door in his face and he yells "It makes a great door stop!" Haha i was dying.

The biggest difference between these nick shows now, more specifically the reality shows, is that they aren't relatable anymore. Older shows like drake and josh and iCarly even, they were easily focused on comedy but had topics that a great majority could relate to here and there. For drake and josh it was simply a sibling rivalry and parent issues, almost everyone who watched the show could easily relate to those topics. For iCarly, it was simply a social group that would hang out and post videos, no different than the media nowadays. Now I haven't seen shows like game shakers but I have seen thundermans and Henry danger here and there from my step brother and they're just random plot lines that people scratch their heads with, from what I gathered alot only watch it because it's tv, it's action, but they easily get bored of it and just go to the current global iCarly, the media, for a better laugh. No matter what it's just a corporate thing where they just put all their eggs in one basket going to SpongeBob, I guarantee you that the loud house will just be another fairly oddparents and just be treated like a regular show, ie 3-12 seasons, depending how well it holds up

Nickelodeon isn’t dead, television is dead aside from (live) sports. I wish there was a way to, on occasion, program every smartphone in the country to show to same thing, to recreate the effect of a television-centric world. I was watching the grinch on ABC yesterday thinking “man I can’t see any kid older than about 3 watching this right now” whereas when there was nothing to do but watch tv, watching Christmas specials like the Grinch or Rudolph was a tradition until I was probably 7 or 8.
@Anderino
@Anderino 4 года назад
TheLocalLt I think that's one of the negatives of streaming sites becoming dominant. There's no shared collective experience when it comes to watching anything that's not live sports. I remember when Danny Phantom premiered when I was in 4th grade. I believe after the Kids Choice Awards. I was so excited and had been waiting all week. Saw the first episode and I was hooked on it. The next day when I went to school, *everyone* was talking about it. It felt really cool to know that all your classmates were watching the same thing as you live and would be talking about it the next time you saw them. Compare that to now where we have so much choice and can pick when we watch it. I'll watch an episode of Bake Off the night they put the newest series up. Another friend will watch the whole series in one night and has to be careful not to spoil anything. Another friend will fall asleep while watching the first episode for three days because she watches it while she's in bed. Another person will say they saw it when it was airing in Britain a few months ago. For all the good and variety that kind of choice gives us, I think it does kill a little bit of the magic of collectively sharing the same experience, which imo was one of the amazing parts of TV.
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 года назад
Jorge Morejon Garcia right the “pixie dust” has gone out from a lot of things lately, still working out how exactly to get it back. Shared collective experiences are important for the national psyche, and not just among kids at school the next day, also among adults at work around the water cooler

I usually like his reviews and videos but this one I have to disagree with when I was a kid I loved shows like Chalk Zone Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide iCarly Victorious My Life as a Teenage Robot The Mighty B! Unfabulous True Jackson VP Big Time Rush All Grown Up Danny Phantom Etc. But after 2013 the shows and programs just stopped. Not all together of course but before there were like 4 cartoon shows and like 5 or 6 live shows that would be popular and be showing on nick at the same time and now there’s only like 3 live show (one of them is the reboot of All That) and 2 cartoon shows and the other half is either spongebob, or reruns or shorts. There is no more creativity in the channel and there not trying as much they used to. And I can say the same thing about Disney Channel Thank you everybody for coming to my Ted Talk.
