he played this song the wors way ever. listen how to play it clive. mc braien when he is playing songs didnt go forward didnt kick you.and as time pass he play worse and worse
Agree, I have never wanted IM to become a jazz band. Clive was like locomotive =straight, striking and unstopable. He was so metal, not bluesy and jazzy like Nicko, who adds milions of ghost notes but on the other hand lacks a lot of important notes in fills, mostly last few notes of fills and put a couple of kick drum notes instead.
YES!! I'm so happy you hear this. Nicko has, in the drumming world a, " VERY DEEP POCKET' . It is much more important to be a deep pocket drummer than a flashy drummer and Nicko very tastefully exhibits both here. Very good ear.
This guy used to live across the street from me in West Boca Raton FL. I used to see him in the Winn Dixie Grocery and nobody knew who he was………except me!
Love this guy..his mumbling and yelling...brilliant...i did that to ,when played drums in my old band...Nicko rules..he is the one getting me drumming.Bless him.
I just love the way he lets the songs and the riffs breathe by not over playing the bass drum, metal bands today are playing too much double bass like it’s a sport or something?
Dude He can't over play the bass drum as he has just one which is an exception in the whole metal. In my opinion he over plays in this song. All the ghost notes and shortened or re-improvised fills - what is the reason for that?? I can't see any.
@@martinblackwhite if you want to listen to boring and basic drums go listen to Metallica. No reason for ghost notes he says, lmao'd hard at that. He doesn't even use that many ghost notes, wait until you find out about Opeth's album Watershed.
The fact this is live is amazing.. can hear him making all his noises as well. Amazing. What a drummer. Listen to his grooves. They are unreal. 3:23 that fill was golden, especially the open close hi hatt. Perfection
Nicko is the drummer that made me wanna pick up the sticks.. piece of mind was the album.. where eagles dare drum intro did it for me man.. i was hooked.. thanks Nicko!! 🤘😈🤘
Clive is great playing lock-step with Steve but damn Nicko is killing it back there! His rhythm and groove really drive these songs. Thanks for sharing. Kudos to Nicko!
Thank you SO MUCH for putting this out! There’s a literal goldmine of info in there. Helped me realise in greater detail what is it that I love in his drumming. A lot of his placement and patterns remind me of Bonham’s.
This is a master class in technique and groove. Clive’s version is great but nothing compared to this. Clive had a very basic straight forward style, the way Nicko places all the nuances in the groove was way beyond anything Clive ever did…in saying this is not to insult Clive’s playing either.
Nico overplays the WHOLE song. I MUCH prefer how Clive did it. I have mad respect for Nico’s work and what he’s done for the band, but there’re many cases where Clive’s approach fit better. I feel he tried to serve the song and not do as much as he can all the time.
@@alexandernilssonmusic I would agree that Clive’s approach suited the more raw energy of the earlier albums but I think for a composition like this a more considered approach seems appropriate. I don’t find it overly busy. I like how he really lays distinct grooves for each part of the song that ultimately flow beautifully. That is one of the things I love about Nicko is he doesn’t overplay anything, he is always in a pocket. Again, I love Clive too but Nicko has a sophistication that Clive never had. We are splitting hairs here which is only indicative of how much we love this band…the greatest band on earth!
I think what's phenomenal about it is that Nicko only uses one bass pedal. It's very impressive. I've been trying to do that for years... If you have two pedals...then you use them too... Actually, he just needs to work on his vocals a bit...
I wonder how is his ride technique called. He does not play the ride body itself the whole time, some hits are more pronounced, but he does not hit only the bell either. It is something in between and that is the sound I like the most. But I can't achieve it neither on my e-drums nor on my midi drums with a drum plugin.
Hey , He switches from the tip of the stick to shoulder of the stick👍👍👍 When he plays the ride with the tip , it's a ping type sound, with the shoulder its a bigger type sound..👍👍🥁🥁🥁
One thing you have to factor in with his ride cymbal.. because it’s so close to his toms he has it literally drilled into the stand so it doesn’t move and inch when he’s playing it, otherwise it would be clapping against the rims of his toms and sound terrible. Because of this it chokes a lot of the sound so even when he’s hitting the main body of the cymbal it has a slight bell like sound to it. It’s an explosive ride! I’ve owned one since I was 12 and for rock/metal I’ll never use a different cymbal, it’s the ultimate ride imho. The body is so explosive and the bell cuts like a warm knife through butter
I love his jazzy and groovy style of playing, he bring so much dynamism to the song compared to the straight-fowardness of Clive. May Clive Burr rest in peace, he was a great drummer and his style was good for his time, but now it would be too old school.
Both great imho, Clive got me in to iron maiden and niko kept me there. Especially with the old vinyl records where he would record stories about the band on the B side. Probably before you’re time though :)
Awful. Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of the songs that Nicko plays worst. He totally destroys the original rhythm turning it into an ultras march for football stadiums.
