I'm sure it depends on the Yandere, but for the most part I don't think they actually kill their lovers unless they feel betrayed by them. They'll kill anyone else who tries to get close to them in any way, including family and friends. In the case where they DO kill their lover, I imagine it is something like, "I'm doing this for us," "If I can't have you, no one can," or "This is they only way I can have your heart."
If Yandere Simulator has taught me anything, it’s this. A Yandere will only kill their love interest, which will be referred to as “their Senpai”, as a last resort. If the Senpai has declared their love for another, whom they vow to never betray, the Yandere will first kill the one who stole their Senpai’s heart. If there are bystanders who witnessed this, the Yandere will most likely kill them too. They will then chase their Senpai before killing them, usually with a unique weapon, as it will be explained later. After laying the fatal blow, the Yandere will proceed to give their Senpai a kiss as life fades from their body. After the Senpai’s death, the Yandere, like a robot without a purpose, will proceed to commit suicide. Most likely with the same weapon used to kill their Senpai. JJ R nope, dude, that’s not what a senpai is. It literally just means upperclassman and it’s used for male AND female people and there is no romantic implication at all. Please don’t use Yandere Simulator as an example for authentic Japanese tropes as one of the students is literally called Sukubi Dubidu.

Someone pointed it out and I can't believe I didn't realize it before, but when Yumeko (Running Mo-she-rige) is running by Joker, if you pay attention, she's actually chasing after the guy she likes, instead of running because she's late for school, lol.
