Im greek cypriot, ive visited the north once for a wedding. My dad gets along well with that family, both the groom and my dad drank whiskey together, the songs played were the same ones we sing just in Turkish, we look the same as well. The people fighting in these comments are pathetic. I wish people could move on its not the 70s anymore
I am Polish and I understand the pain of living on one island when everyone wants to lay a hand and take land. That they divided peoples and said that „peoples must be different”. I understand because this is what we have for a long time with Russia and Germany. We have been fighting this way for Poland and freedom … for a thousand years and we are strong and together. One brought Nazism and others Communism ... today they are gone! and we are in the same place.
Iv lost 256 donums and buildings of my family. thats a lot of property , life changing for my family, I am in the process of the compensation anyway wasn’t jus5 loss of property it was also loss of life tortured. It's not called the Cypriotic side, its known as the Greek Cypriot side or the Republic of Cyprus. Just to let people know it's the Greek Cypriot side.
U call the Turkish side the Turkish side but the Greek side the Greek side but the difference is that both of the sides are Cypriot. We are one people, just divided by western imperialism.
Two community did actually live in peace before 1940-50s. Everything started of with the 'ENOSIS' idea, regardless turkey and US had a secret plan or not. Whoever started this ENOSIS idea, they simply did not want to share the island. All the following was complete reckless ideas; i) ENOSIS, ii) the way the British empire controlled the situation and, iii) turkey invasion. Whether all this was avoidable? THERE WAS NOT EVEN A SINGLE PERSON WITH THE QUALITIES TO AVOID THIS. Lots of innocent people (cy turkish, cy greek, british) lost their lives. Survivors had to start from scratch. Who is suffering now?.

More than 18% of the population in UK are foreigners shall we split UK? We can never unite now due to all the mainlanders on your side I know because I have a mixed family and all Turkish Cypriots from Cyprus have moved to UK. You have absolutely no idea! Turkey came to the island at the request of the Turkish Cypriot people to protect them from being massacred by the Greek side since the early 1960s. Both sides of the division are Cypriot, Greek in the south, Turkish in the north.. it's NOT Cypriot in the south and Turkey in the north..do some research! As an outsider, pick up a book and read your history.

@@AO-jk1pg No they are not. Only the turkish cypriots are cypriots too be exact. Most of them were originally Greek Cypriots who converted to islam during the ottoman occupation of the island so they could avoid paying steep taxes.

There is not Greek side and Turkish side (it means under the illegal Turkish occupation). Both sides are part of the European union. As per Protocol 10 of the accession to the European union and from 2004, whole Cyprus island (Republic of Cyprus) belongs to the UE. However, temporarily and until Turkey withdraws their occupational troops, it is impossible for the Republic of Cyprus to act as the administrator of the under Turkish occupation northern territories of the Republic of Cyprus. So simple....!!! Please ask, how many Turkish cypriots use Republic's of Cyprus IDs when travelling abroad. All of them recognize the legacy of the Republic of Cyprus. All the countries of the world (except Turkey) do !!!

The entire world, UN, EU, UK, USA do not recognise the leadership in the Northern part. It's not accepted as a separate country by anybody other than Turkey. It's occupied land, and is known internationally as occupied Cyprus.
I have a question: Are border checkpoints actually open for tourists from foreign nations only? I wonder if citizens of South Cyprus are allowed to travel to the North and if citizens of the Turkish Northern part are allowed to visit the South? Does anybody know that? Thanks!
Yes the Greek Cypriots can visit the North. My family in Cyprus went to the North from Limassol and Larnaca and restored the church that was destroyed inside in the village of Yialousa. The Church was used to keep donkeys and other animals in. It was in a dreadful state. I personally saw the state of the church on a visit. After much work to clean the church they held a service. I am informed that the church is attended by Cypriots for services at certain times in the year. Most people can go across the border now but you have to be back by 6.pm.

Also, when I was there before the '74 war, the sides were flipped - Greeks north, Turks south. Which made it hard for everyone once the Turks invaded the North for both had to flee to the other side, losing their homes. War sucks, always.

There were hundreds of churches on the island in mid ages. They were demolished by earlier rulers in order to construct fortifications. Ottomans preferred to keep them.

However, from the 12th century BC, when the first Greeks colonized Cyprus the island's Greek character has always prevailed that's why to me it's wrong to say Turkey Vs Cyprus. I apologize if I offended you. I just wanted to make it clear that I was crossing into the other area. I know it’s a sensitive subject so I tried to minimize using words that were too official. I didn’t film but I had a really nice walking tour with a guide, a local from Nicosia. I asked her about the occupied zone and she told me to go see it. She didn’t seem offended at all that I was interested.
