That lack of requirement is entirely intentional and can't really be marked against the game. Those who want to learn are rewarded with increased power, which is more than enough.

Yeah it's not really a mark against the game for me, just a little thing where I wish there were more mission where it had to go a bit deeper. Some mission ask for more, but the stuff you unlock in post game make up for it in the end. Won't spoil it for you. How far are you so far? You enjoying it?

I can't tell you how far I am without spoiling something. We (my gf and I) played it for two days straight over the weekend other than the couple of hours I spent on the stream, half of which was spent trying to get the damn thing working. I don't have an opinion on it because I don't think I could summon the words to adequately describe my feelings. But I think that Platinum's ability to create story out of mechanics and Yoko Taro's scenario and writing have melded together to create a game that grips me with a kind of fever. Plus its platinum, and the complication is there. An example: In Nier 1, I farmed boar for hides and meat early game. I hated basically every second, but did it because you have to grind in jrpgs and I just switched to mindless grind mode.While playing Nier A on Saturday my gf had a nap in the afternoon for two hours because she had a cold, so I farmed moose to get hides and meat. I was completely absorbed in learning the mechanics of the combat system, learning to string together long weapon switch ground combos without any pauses using dash, instant jump cancels and just evades. While running away from the moose to reset the pack, I was practicing these combos with complete absorption.So in this game, for me, grinding enemies resulted in a state of flow.

Grinding was a none issue in this game. I picked up everything I saw and fighting enemies is so fun that it went by super fast. The only pain is farming pure waters since its just riding between two areas on a moose, but even that took like 15 minutes tops. As for spoilers, I've just did the last end game content yesterday and now I'm just clearing out a few remaining side quest and pod upgrades. With how little time I've had I've put nearly 80 hours in and intend on playing through the game again in Japanese after I go back an finish Nioh and the new DkS3 DLC. I agree with you that this game is an anomaly and incredibly difficult to describe in words. But the best way I can think is how you said. Platinum have managed to adapt the original Nier formula into something deep and rewarding that fits with the context of the game. Yoko Taros habits and scenario writing fit together well with Platinums habits and help make up for what they sometime lack in story breadth. And with Taro dragging along Okabe the music is amazing as well, which fits even better with Platinum since they have an understanding of sound choreography during scenes. Both sides mesh together so well you wonder why they haven't worked together sooner. If we could get a Drakengard sequel in this vein I would be super happy. Though it's up to Taro for me. He doesn't liek being in the lime-light too much so it wouldn't surprise me if he waited a while to make another game with Platinum let alone at all. Though as he's said on numerous occasions, he's a realist and needs to eat so he'll do anything for money. I'm thinking about doing a write up for the game for a friends site, but that depends. I'm glad your enjoying the game and can't wait until you beat it. Love to gush with you.
