I like both characters. It depicts different feels although its the same storyline. The father seems understandable. But for some reason the brother just makes it more saddening..
So simply looking at this gameplay for reference, it's not as clunky as people made it out to be. So I wonder if it's because I'm simply watching and not actually playing it.
I played the original to completion and it was largely God Of War inspired, even down to how the action slows down when you hit enemies. I assume that was to give your attacks perceived weight. It certainly wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, but the combat had little to no depth. They seem to be actively correcting that while redoing animations to make combat flow better and be more responsive. I'm excited for chance to play a better version of the game that got me into Nier and Drakengard!
not that i have anything against the dad role american neir got, in fact, i thought it was great, a faher fighting for his child. kinda like the design of this version of the character better, though. aesthetics *shrug* whadareyagunnadoo?
Nier Gestalt was developed first, and it was supposed to be an X360 exclusive. They decided to change it to replicant for the ps3 release to appeal more to the japanese audience (The xbox360 is not very popular in japan). So yeah, you are already playing the game as originally intended.
just ordered this version of nier to celebrate my hype for Nier automata, that should be interesting, I have never bought a Japanese game before... but I know my way around nier, so I should be fine.
+HushedTerror The whole game should be no problem in japanes instead of one part, the "visual novel" part. you have to give some answers and thats annoying if you choose the wrong ones. xD
Nobody forced them. It was fully their decision. Theirs. The developers' and the writers' who wrote BOTH stories. Replicant and Gestalt are BOTH the true version since they were both released in Japan at the same time just on different platforms. They're the same kind of a deal as say Pokémon games that release two slightly different versions at the same time. Just because you like it doesn't make Replicant's superiority anything else than just your opinion. Don't try to present it as a fact.
***** Eh, I guess it's because I like shonen characters like the young Nier since I'm used to them, and because I like Japanese games with shonen characters. That's just what I think.
there is also a slight change in data where gestalt starts at 2049 and then takes a 1,312 year jump replicant starts at 2053 and takes a 1,400 year jump
There are two versions of Nier, the one you mean is called "Nier Gestalt" and the one i am playing here is "Nier Replicant". There are a few differences in the two version like the main character who is in the other version an adult and in this a teenager. But "Nier Replicant" was only released in japan for PS3. ;-)
In Nier Gestalt, it's a beautiful story on how a Father tries to keep his daughter safe from an apocolyptic world...in Replicant, it becomes a teen trying to keep his little sister safe. Both are amazingly beautiful in my opinion...
Ehm.... I hope you won't mind me asking this, but... Are there huge differences between the games, other than their relationship and age? Like.... differences in the story, or things like that?
I prefer Nier Gestalt because I like that characters design and story line. Not because I'm American and prefer big burly men. Gestalt isn't even that burly. If Replicant had had Gestalts design then I'd like him more. I can't stand when people try to devalue something because they prefer one archetype over another. I play plenty of Japanese games but Gestalt for me was better. It would have been better if there was one Nier who was in the middle of muscular and slim, so he'd have both speed and power. Kinda like Auron from ff 10. /rant
Me too, and it's interesting that even though he's a big guy, they still made him really kind-hearted like most JRPG protagonists and unlike you see most american Burly main characters.
Still that's not their reasoning. If you look into what the developers have said it's likely that Adult Nier was chosen as the international main character because the target audience of the game is meant to be older than most SE RPGs. They were trying to appeal to a more mature audience, not Americans specifically. I've stated the facts there are about the subject so I hope you see my point. Your discontent on the subject is unjustified and solely based on personal preference.
Sadly, you do not. There are two versions, the Original version which is Replicant, the one you're watching, and then there is the American/Western version which is Gestalt, and they made Nier older. If you understand or know how to read Japanese, you could get Replicant and have the younger version of Nier.
I prefer young Nier than that old NIer guy, Old Nier guy isn't that much cool bop. Crap why didn't they release a western version, even just for English subtitles I'm fine with that. Having a Japanese audio and Eng Subs would be great.
Do you get to choice what Nier looks like cause in some walkthroughs I've seen him more like an adult than a teenager? Cause right now he looks like a teenager?
The design isn't my point, but the fact that the story was skillfully westernized. Besides Gestalt came out in Japan too. Just think of it in the context of the story. The story of a desperate father who makes mistakes in his attempt to save his daughter is much more powerful to the western audience than that of an overly attached brother. Shadowlord too seems like a much less sympathetic character if in Replicant he lets humanity die out just because of his sister instead of his daughter.
It is. Because the contrary has been stated directly by the developers. I've said everything there is to be said so I'm through with talking to you. I'm sorry if you're unable to appreciate the game as it is but everyone's entitled to their opinion I suppose.
I do not have much knowledge of the story of Nier, but seeing it has two versions of the main character I wanted to ask: Is the story different in both the versions?
i'd agree with you, except i don't really like the romance between kaine and father nier... yes they are both adults, but i like them better as a more youthful couple. that's pretty much the only reason i wish replicant was localized. otherwise i don't really care :P
damn it i don't know japanese :/ does anyone know where i could watch a walkthrough of this game or even play it?(though i know it only came out in japan) I loved gastalt and i would like to know how this version plays out too!
In japan, only beautiful teenage main characters can save the world! :| Y'know, I'm not talking about this game, but it's brought to my attention the fact that everyone needs to have the Hollywood treatment.
Looking a trends, I would say that if they only released replicant in the west, it would have sold even worse than gestalt had. Thats probably why they didn't even bring replicant to the west.
This gives me a Drakengard vibe more than ver. 1.22, certainly ver. 1.22 is more Automata-oriented. Nonetheless, i actually like the ps3 version so far...
Indeed. But it's not just that. Gestalt has more reds and browns while Replicant is more bluish and gray... And I hate brownish colors... Sucks for me.
I'm saying that western culture doesn't have a similar concept of sibling bonds usually represented in Japanese media. You're being very insensitive calling people preferring the story of Gestalt idiots there. Also Kainé still has a penis in the English translation but it's presented more subtly through the Kainé's Story segment. Also the writers are the same. They should not keep the Replicant elements just to pander to people who like anime prettyboys and are familiar with Japanese media.
Those that shit on Replicant for having a younger character would be pretty pissed if they read the novel Grimoire Nier, it's supposed to cover what happens after ending D.
Nope it ls the other way around like. It came out on xbox first the younger character was created for the ported ps3 version there is no original xbox version with the kid
Michael Koontz Replicant was planned first, gestalt had the english dubbing recorded before replicant. That's where the confusion came from. It's all explained in Grimoire Nier.
The character design of Neir in the Gestalt version is bad in my opinion. Its not a matter of Neir's age I don't mind him being an adult but he looks boring
