Nier is a very over-rated game. Everyone praised it, so I thought I couldn't go wrong buying it. But I was bored quickly and after I slogged through it I never played it again. There are way better games in the genre. I am baffled by the love this game gets.

I think the comparisons are valid though, at least on the visual/technological aspects. Replicant is 'technically' newer than Automata. Replicant could've looked better, and probably should have, but most of us will play it regardless.

@@cokenpizza Not like Automata looks too much better. Automata looked very last gen at the time, if you looked past it's excellent lighting which pretty much acted as window dressing for it's low detail environments and textures.

I actually listen to NieR OSTs a lot more than NieR Automata. Although this year, Cyberpunk 2077 OST still the best one this year for me, especially listening while driving LOL

I pre-ordered a couple days ago. Automata was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had and I've been gaming for 5 decades now. Review seems very fair and nothing mentioned concerns me. Excellent review as always, sir!

I played the gestalt version that was released here. Yea the graphics were back, environments drab. Extremely bleak but it just pulled me in at the time. Even the boring sidequests. So glad they have given us an updated version. Since I loved the gestalt so I know I won't have an issue with this.

just clicked on the video. without watching anything yet, im here to inform you that this game is really a gem that just needs to be experienced. if you've got a weekend to yourself, grab a blanket and some snacks, stay up late and just play. let the story drag you through depression once again and fill you with a sense of dread when finished, because lets be honest, thats what Yoko Taro was here to do many years ago. please buy this game. okay now i watch the video

I loved the OG Nier (picked it up after reading an LP thread in the SomethingAwful forums), so seeing it come around again like this is nice (and bewildering, since Yoko Taro got NO LOVE until Automata).

The original neirs main issue was that the combat wasn't very good. Yoko realized this and asked platinum games (studio who made bayonetta, metal gear rising) to design the combat system for automata. It's a big part of what attracted people to the neir series for the first time.

That's a big problem people tend to do: Comparing games rather than reviewing them by it's own merits. If people simply judge the games by their merits, the gaming industry would be different as Developers wouldn't be so focussed in topping their works all the time (critically and financially) and more into developing to their games to be unique or at least renown in the memory of gamers This is one of the reasons The Legend of Zelda games (not counting the CD-i games as they were never developed by Nintendo) are so successful. The games never intended to top over the Zeldas that came before in everything. Instead, they made the games to be well known years into the future with a very solid chronology to tie them to each other Another series is Persona, each game is made with the intention of topping each other and, as a result each is Unique in many with the only thing tying to each other is the core mechanics And there are so many examples of this philosophy out there. Of course most of them come from the Japanese Gaming Industry and also Indie Gaming Developers (with some exceptions from the Western and Asian Gaming Industry) which goes to show why the Japanese became the leaders (and in my point of view they still are)

This game is niche but its worth it. I know the anime girl in sexy pajamas can be a turn off but Yoko Taro's games are masterful when it comes to perspective. It makes any other game I've played feel like I played with horse blinders. Multiple playthroughs add to the narrative not just new game +. If you're like me, exhausted that the industry (in the west at least) seems like it can only deliver narrative through shooters. This game is a much needed break.

Because metacritic is the objective metric to go by. The combat in Platinum games (the gameplay was re designed by one of the higher up devs at plat.) aren’t for everyone, but if you click with them, like vanquish or transformers devestation, they are unparalleled. Again though, I wouldn’t pass it off because of metacritic . Hopefully you tried them and came to that conclusion. I also realize you are just trying to get a reaction out of fan boys but in case you aren’t, just thought I would mention metacritic is not too great of a ratings system.

I’m surprised you have a problem with Kaine’s outfit, especially since it sounds like you played the original. In my opinion, the whole point of the odd character designs in Yoko Taro games are because the characters are usually instead reflective of taboo or subversive themes that cause you to examine them beyond just their appearance.

It doesn't though. The combat system was overhauled and Taura did offer assistance, but the combat system was not made by Platinum so don't expect too much in that regard. It's going to be miles better than the original, but nowhere near Automata level.

As i expected. Nier was never as good a "game" as automata(thanks to platinums involvement) but the experience of the content is much greater than the gameplay portion of course and that's where nier always has shined

it’s not a full remaster, no spoilers, all I will say is they did add a decent amount of new content (specifically an entire new route/ending with ending E) and a new playable character :) it’s definitely closer to a remake in my books but they definitely didn’t commit to the full blown remake style that they could have

The environment is boring, the loading screens are annoying, and some of the “puzzles” are dated: But the music is amazing, the world is interesting and the voice acting is too quality. The experimental gameplay moments are fun too

I'd think it would be easy not to compare the two as one was it's own thing, while this is a remaster. Going to have some aged things about it, but it's music and story is better than Automata. And the enemies. I found the robot enemies in that to be either cute or silly looking.

@@CC42_ I've listened to Automata's and it's beautiful, yet Nier has both haunting beauty and epic punch in it's tracks. I don't think it's the best OST I've listened to, but it is up there because it is one of the few games that matches the atmosphere of the game and setting. Megaten/Persona series, whatever Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu work on, Castlevania, Deus Ex, Sega, older Resident Evil's older games, FromSoftware, Falcom and some others come immediately to mind. They prioritize music as part of the storytelling or want to sell soundtracks, so they pay extra attention. It's why I love Japanese games. The West thinks in terms of budget, so they go for an orchestra which you can't remember a single track most cases. Music is a character of it's own for many Japanese games.

The only thing I find strange about this remaster is them just pasting the android combat animations on young boy protag. He in no way should be able to move like that. lol it's still a MUCH welcome change from how the combat used to be though.

I feel like I’m the only person that really didn’t dig Nier:Automata. It did have incredible music, but the actual gameplay difficulty, really killed it for me. Normal mode was kindergarten and hard was just ridiculous and not fun.

In this he says "original game" and doesn't mean the original ps3 game, but the SECOND game, automata. Makes the review confusing to listen to and i have to rewind to catch what was being said. This remake is the THIRD console Nier game, even though it's an upgrade of the FIRST one.

It's not a remake though, it's a remaster with some additional enhancements like the combat system rework. If you look into why they picked that specific number for the title, 1.22474487139... is the approximation of the square root of 1.5. So this is basically Nier Replicant 1.5

Yep, yoko taro wasn't sure this was a remake or a remaster. It still run on the same engine, same code, but they've added more content to make it closer to the book, redo the character's model's etc

I actually liked the gameplay from Nier more then that of Automata. I liked the fighting system and bosses more in Nier. Maybe im alone in this, but to me Automata wasn't as good in my opinion. Great review tho as always

As someone who is a huge fan of Nier Automata, I appreciate being able to go back and play it's predecessor Nier Replicant. Sure, the game is rough around the edges, especially since it's an older title, but it's still enjoyable regardless. Nier Replicant may not be a full on remake, but it's OK. Originally, it only came out in Japan and I'm glad that it was finally able to get a U.S. release. Much like Nier Automata, Nier Replicant does a wonderful job of presenting to the player, a post apocalyptic world that's dilapidated and grim. It's definitely a world that's in a dire state and the dreary atmosphere is brought to the forefront rather nicely. The soundtrack is phenomenal as expected and it's an auditory treat to the ears. Despite a few issues and some less than interesting environments, Nier Replicant is a title that's worthy of a playthrough. Otherwise, thanks as always Karak for another honest and unbiased review. I really appreciate it!

Well, yeah. The entire world got the Gestalt version with Father Nier. But, only Japan got the Replicant version with Brother Nier. So, it would only make sense for them to want to make the Replicant version also available for the rest of the world for its 10th anniversary. Father Nier is still there on PS3/Xbox 360.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this if you don't care about the story that much. The gameplay is fine, but I heard the enemies feel spongy on higher difficulties. This game's main focus is the story, the characters and the soundtrack.

Isn't Automata's very hard mode just damage sponges? That being said, if you're looking for something like Automata's very hard more, then I'd imagine that Replicant's very hard mode will be just the same as they had Taura from Platinum guiding them. But, if you don't care about story, music, or characters and just want fast-paced action then you're better off with something like Nioh 2.
