The errors in the depth control, however, could not explain the misfires. Here was the cause of the ignition mechanism whose sensitive relay moved because of the drive vibrations, thereby triggering the ignition contact. The aggravating factor was that the natural fluctuations and irregularities of the earth's magnetic field in the northern latitudes also had an effect on the magneto-ignition.
