Nigel was and still is at the top of the guitarist heap. Who else would take his volume control and think to go from "10," to "11?" And then have the GENIUS to realize the one-uppers would try to show him up by taking their amps to "12," so he goes straight to "∞?" Tufnel has simply humbled many a great player into submission. In the guitar universe, he is THE black hole!
perhaps he is more like that dog that got sent into space (and died) a pioneer.. yeah, he is definitely the guitar universe version of that now that i think about it.
Satch is very good at what he does, but he never thought of using a violin as a bow during one of his guitar solos like Nigel did. That's a whole different level of genius.
if you are not envious and or jealous of something then you lack the ability to strive forward. just because you dont understand something does not mean you give up on it or dont strive to achieve that level.
Satriani plays very safe. When you hear him play you're like "that's nice" and forget it the next day. Tuffnel's solos are iconic and 50 years from now will be celebrated as the pinnacle of heavy rock guitar
There's really no comparison. I have only one Satriani album, but with Tap I have -well, I don't have any of theirs but if I did it would be more than Satriani.
once after a concert I asked Nigel to sign my shirt...he said ill go you one better mate and came home with me and mowed my lawn and stayed for a whole week doing my chores for me ill never forget Nigel ...so sad to hear he exploded during his last concert.
Saw these guys back around 84 when I was in the Air Force at the base I was stationed at the time. They played an amazing version of Sex Farm Woman until the guitar player got mad and threw his guitar down and walked off the stage.
I remember seeing Tap on the Intravenus de Milo Tour in ‘74. One of the best concerts of my life. Also, regardless of what the critics say, I thought Shark Sandwich was a great record.
“Oh, yeah, right now there are about 600...guitar gods. Every magazine that comes out has a new one. They have to, to keep the circulation of the guitar magazines going. ‘Cause it can’t just be...the same guy, every week. And then, after 600, they come ‘round again to the first guy.” Truer words have never been spoken.
In the late '90s when bookstores were still doing a healthy business I always went in for my electronics mags and they were near the music mags which I didn't bother with but I couldn't help notice that at least one publication every month seemed to have this same guy's photo or at least his name appeared on the covers month after month - Steve Vai.
I saw Spinal Tap in 1983 in Buggtussle, OK when they were on their “Tap Into Livestock Auctions” tour. Tap fans might recall that this was the concert where their drummer Jackie “Shanks” Slaugh was gored by a Texas longhorn
Classy and humble comments here by Nigel towards one of his peers. And despite what he’s saying, I feel NT is definitely one of the guitarists of all time. The original GOAT as it were.
"His fingers move...and I say yeah, yeah....but where are they going????" How many times have I been in this situation while learning guitar???? Jaw dropping in front of every video, instructional session and stuff.....I finally learned my chops but this sentence summarises 25 years of my life!!!!! Still laughing on that one....
One of my oldest cousins drove from New Jersey to Cleveland back in 1982 to see them and he felt he was ripped off because they performed, later he would find out that at that time due to drugs and bad management that tour was a disaster, that particular gig they couldn't find the stage, after thirty minutes my cousin went home disappointed. For the longest he couldn't listen to Spinal Tap.
His amp goes to infinity 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 his fingers move but they are to fast I can't see where they are going. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Class . Nigel is number 329 in the rock gods 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Spinal Tap are an institution. Stone Henge is an absolute classic.
Actually, the hallmark of Christopher Guest movies (including Spinal Tap) is NO script. Just like I’m sure his comments on Satch are improvised. I would love a proper sequel... my idea would be to see Tap trying to adapt to the trends since we last seen them; grunge, nu metal (rap metal), etc. would be hilarious whatever they come up with.
It’s not just Joe, we are all terrified of Nigel as a guitarist. Spinal Tap was so great they would even occasionally play with two basses just to get the point across.
It's kind of like Mozart. They told him "There's too many notes. Leave some of them out." Nigel is a master at leaving out some of the notes. Usually the ones he should leave in, but that's a conversation for another day.
I had to watch this clip 3 times because I couldn't stop laughing so I kept missing stuff. Nigel is the fucking bomb... "You can't be jealous of something you can't fathom"... Roflmao!!
'my new amp goes to infinity', what a legend- he took his most famous joke and aded to it brilliantly. but thats the thing with old Nigel, innit- 'theres a fine line between clever and stupid'....
..."Joe was very frightened bc of the volume..!" Oh my God LMAO! and concept of why Guitar Magazines have to keep re-circulating top guitarists when they reach #600! Lol! ...Rock on Nigel!
Oh, yeah? Drum magazines just bounce around between Steve Smith, Buddy Rich and John Bonham. With the occasional appearance by Moon, Purdue and Porcaro.
@@VinceLovechild Our drummer James 'Canned' Peaches left us for Tap and we never saw him again. There were rumours and sightings, but after a while nobody cared.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver I heard that he’d done a collaboration with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. You’d have thought that they could’ve come up with a better name than Eric, Jack and James.
I am Guitar God # 601. Damnit! I just missed out on my spot in the rotation. Oh, to be in the top 600...and Nigel's coveted spot at 349 is solid. I would be envious, but I can't fathom that kind of volume. So how can you be jealous of something you can't fathom?
