Modern military tanks are logistic nightmares and not maintenance friendly. They need a long logistical trail which can be slow. The more corruption China has, the more things that can go wrong. It's possible that after 10 minutes, the tanks may fail on their own if they showed up in working condition to begin with.

In the hierarchy of tanks you can buy as a third world country with limited budget that actually work properly and don't require significant maintenance from well trained crews, the T-90 is probably near the top. Lets be real, if you're not fighting western vehicles it'll get the job done.

Well i would say its the most cost efficient tank right now atleast. Costs half as much as any western tank in production right now, has pretty good Armor, and since its in africa, they dont have to worry about modern advanced AT weapons.

Nigeria cancelled the purchase of 10 T-90s. MBTs are kind of overkill for Nigeria considering they're fighting guerillas with just RPGs. They decided to use the money to buy 40 Legion MRAPs instead.

VT-4s are not a match for M1A2s or Leo 2s. But that isn't the point. Because Nigeria is not buying Leo 2s or M1s. Don't see a scenario where they ever would. What is the point of the comparison? It's like asking why Azerbaijan bought JF-17s instead of F-35s. The VT-4s are fine for an MBT. Thailand and Pakistan have bought them after Nigeria. There are many countries around the world that don't have M1s. They can't afford M1s, the US wouldn't sell them, or they just don't need something so top of the line. Just like not everybody buys a Ferrari or a Lambo. There is a market for other things.

This is true. Having 40mm for top armor is a luxury. However, the type 98 tank has 160mm- 200mm armor on the turret side while the hull has 30mm-100mm on its side. Any anti-armor weapon made in the 1960s and newer would penetrate everything but the front. Anything from the 1990s and newer would penetrate the front.

@@baronvonslambert The expense of top-down munitions seems dated. Drones are the current top-down threat killing tanks. The drones tend to be smaller and cheaper than the previous top-down missiles. I agree that the cages won't help with the top-down missiles, but the drones seem more vulnerable to cage barriers. Unless there is an active defense against drones or missiles that the cages interfere with, I would still advocate for tank cages. I look at the Ukrainian crewed tanks that have been destroyed by Russian, and I don't see a single tank cage. Nor do I see any sign that their front or side armor has been penetrated. Western tank design comes from the era when top-down attacks were the rarity. In the current era of warfare shown in the Russian-Ukrainian war, it seems far more common. There needs to be more protection up top. Either reactive armor, or active defenses against drones. Future tanks should have more armor up top, despite it coming from the side armor and making the tank top-heavy. That or main battle tanks are going the way of the battleship.

@dougaltolan3017 no, gas turbo doesn't mean it runs on gasoline. The M1 uses the Avco-Lycoming AGT1500 gas turbine engine. While most tanks in the arsenals of other countries run on diesel engines, from Britain's newest Challenger 3 to the German Leopard-2 series, and the Russian T-90M, the Abrams is an outlier. The AGT1500 gas turbine engine works by using an air inlet to draw in air. This air is then compressed, mixed with fuel, and combusted, creating a hot, fast-moving flow of gas. This gas flow is used to drive a series of turbines connected to the tank's sprockets, which in turn propels the tank's tracks. It gives the tank excellent acceleration, but it also allows the tank to run on jet fuel mainly, as well as gasoline, diesel, and yes even kerosene. But jet fuel is the preferred fuel.
