This video basically shows the sexual dimorphism and the life stages of the night fury. Here’s the link to the artist: duskish-dragon.tumblr.com/tag...
It makes sense that nightfury tails and wings eventually start to tear because they are extremely fast so the wings and tail would eventually become run down
Yeah and also since most nightfuries don’t make it past those ages it’s also kind of unnatural to the body and like all elderly humans, the dragons will also start to have weaker skin n stuff
@@funtime_error_ I believe that Dragons are Crocodiles-like, they never stop growing, so the terrifying size Toothless in this form must be extremely powerful. We got scared because we never saw one
Dude the ancient would have been an absolute death machine. Nothing would stand a chance. No dragon creature or weaponry form would even come close to rivaling this thing. That is so awesome.
It would actually be the opposite. Torn wings make it less able to fly, and breaking scales weaken its defenses. Its ear nubs and tendrils will probably help it sense danger faster.
@@randomkinkajou5747 and its probably too big and too worn for much flight. cant imagine how /shot/ the stamina of that thing would be. they'd probably rely on being far from actual fights and living in a relatively equal relationship w/ a flock or group.
@@3u-n3ma_r1-c0 I think that because night furies are monogamous, the mate will help bring food, and if we compare them to some other monogamous animals, maybe their young will help them find food, until they're old enough to say goodbye. Just like jackals. Another Thing could be scavenging.
Finally somebody who applies non-mammalian sexual dimorphism to non-mammalian mythical creatures. Edit: yeah OK not all species of bird/lizard have the females be bigger than males. I guess I'd go off the example of large bird-of-prey species. Still tired of seeing the overused "males are bigger and more badass than females" thing on mythical creatures that don't have to apply to this, despite being modelled after mammals or birds.
@@gorgoaku4444 I disagree, it was wise that they have used a combination of both. Avian sexual dimorphism varies depending on the category of bird. For example, with birds of prey the females are most commonly the larger of the species. This is often due to the strength and intimidation they need to defend their young. For both mammals and birds alike, the females body is more practical while the males are built solely for mating. Animals such as the peacock is a great example of this. You could apply the same evolutionary theory to lizards, for most reptile species the females may not be larger than males, however their bodys are still more practical, often being dull in colour compared to males to better hide their eggs though it isn't nearly as clear as avian sexual dimorphism the concept still carries across. The creator has likely combined both lizard and avian sexual dimorphism to get the most realistic and practical examples for nightfury's as of course lizards don't have the ability to fly, this would completely alter the direction of evolution compared to normal lizards. Sorely basing a nightfury's sexual dimorphism from lizards would be innacurate. The attempt at an evolutionary realistic stages of life for nightfury's is actually incredibly accurate. 👌 P.S. sorry for the long answer, I love talking about animals especially the evolution of animals 😅
Honestly dragons are always portrayed as more avian than reptilian, like hoarding shiny things, flying, intelligence, sharp talons, mating dances. All of those are rare to impossible in reptiles That concludes my essay on why dragons are actually giant birds lol
I like how Hiccup just casually never ages and stands there straight af Though, I really like the idea that he Nightfuries grow more horns and spines as they age, very interesting
To put it into some perspective; the first time we see Toothlesss, when he's about 15 probably, his plasma blasts are powerful enough to destroy siege equipment in one shot and stagger the Red Death and the Screaming Death (which has the hardest scales of any dragon). In the second movie, Toothless is 20 and his plasma blasts are now able to destroy seastacks. When supercharged by the Alpha display, they actually blowed off the Bewilderbeast's left tusks. If we follow the logic that Toothless's plasma blasts continue to get more and more powerful, and this `Ancient stage` is what happenes when he's over 200 years old, his blasts could be able to level modern buildings, or at least cause severe damage to it, in a single shot. When fully charged... oh boy. I'm confident in comparing it to actual bombs. Not nukes or the MOAB, that would be disgustingly overpowered. Then again, this entire stage screams overpowered.
@@omegamon0239 oh absolutely modern armoured vehicles and smaller caliber bunkers. Fallout shelters are designed to take nuclear bombs, so it wouldn't take down anything like that.
@@chadpeterson5698 honestly, I doubt he even encountered an Ancient Night Fury. As the video stated, not many furies reached this stage. You'd need siege equipment to penetrate those scales, and there's no way in heck it's going to stay still long enough for you to zero in. Even then, you would need a modern bunker to resist one of those blasts. I don't see one guy soloing one of these things. This isn't Elden Ring. But you're right, it is impressive. Horrible, but impressive.
Man no wonder night furies are feared from their blast that basically destroy anything to their speed and their lightning that could turn them invisible or kill someone and that alpha mode that boost them up.
When I watched the first movie I didn't understood why everybody was so damn afraid of night fury dragons, like toothless looked so small and cute until the second movie came and I realized he was just a teen night fury
Also the point of night furies was that they were black and attacked at night when Berk was already on fire and a haze of smoke covered the sky. And that they were supremely precise and deadly. No one had ever so much as gotten more than a glimpse of one more detailed than a fast-moving, vaguely dragon-like silhouette against the night sky. No one knew exactly what they looked like.
Imagine if Hiccup managed to tame Toothless when he was beginning to become an Ancient-Class Night Fury. Imagine how the battles in the Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge would’ve gone
@@aaronalkor there wouldnt have been a battle more like a one sided stomp scuffle with the tone of "your dumb and annoying go away, if know whats good for you."
@@br2nd Or just a faint 'kabooooom' in the distance, as Toothless snipes the enemy ships from like 2km away or more, just casually wiping out entire fleets
@@101k_with_no_video with, and I did not just order pizza, the last time I had pizza was about a month and a half ago, and it’s from a local one and only place, not like Pizza Hut or smt
I like to think that the only reason toothles is able to live to 300+ year old (as it said that very few night furys live past 70-100) is because he is a titan wing.
Not a Titan wing, it’s more likely that Night Furies possess naturally long lifespans, and most dragons in general likely live for at least a century or two, barring dragons like the Terrible Terrors and Slitherwings, which likely have much shorter lifespans around a few decades long. Toothless had managed to attain an Alpha status, making him the king of the dragons. Trust me, if he became a Titanwing, he’d look drastically different, and be twice as large as a Firewyrm Queen. He’d likely need to be an ancient before becoming a Titanwing in the first place.
@@firetrap6706 At some point in the life of a dragon, they can undergo a metamorphosis, growing much larger in size and becoming much more powerful, having more baseline shots to fire before they run out, and attaining new markings along their skin. There haven’t been many confirmed Titanwings through the runtime of HTTYD, I think around twelve or so? However most dragons tend not to live long enough to undergo such a transformation. Those that do are old, and incredibly dangerous.
@@decimation9780 I like the believe that dragons are like crocodiles, they never stop growing, an example is Gustave, who was never captured, your theory must be right
The whole, ancient night fury thing, makes me wish the shitty “nine realms” spin-off had a ancient toothless in it that sees someone that reminded him of hiccup, could have been a coincidence or maybe they are a descendant of hiccup, either way would have been neat
@@flamepelt3092 It does say 201 to 300 plus years. But you do have a point. Even though a dragon would undoubtedly live longer than any human, I find it considerably unlikely that a dragon of that size, even one as powerful and willful as Toothless, would be able to live long enough to make it to present day. Even if, by some miracle, he was able to live that long, I doubt he would be of much help to anyone at that point, sad as it might be.
@@skylightdarkseal9517 a simple cameo of him looking at the main characters from a distance before panning that view to a much smaller old rotted, fake fin would have said so much though
I think the idea of them getting lighter in color or receiving highlights in their scales really match with their whole “night fury” reputation especially if they’re built to hunt in the night. Makes the white patches on them look like the stars in the sky
genuinely so excited that someone finally realizes that the light furies features are that way not because shes a female, but because all light furies look like that. as well as making the female the bigger more powerful one as is more commonly seen in nature
Mind control and imposing their will onto other dragons isn't a Bewilderbeast ability it's an Alpha ability. Toothless gained Alpha status so he should have this ability should he wished, but knowing our just perfectly overgrown puppy dog, he wouldn't use that ability except to save people and make them understand the concept of harmony and co-existence
not really, because the spikes are still 2d, they are his mini wing things on his back and tail just hardened enough , also most of them will be behind his full body or his wings , also their spikes get bigger whene they go old whene their own wings start to tear apart WHENE they shouldn't fly for too long or too fast
@@jaydee6574 Not really, all of the aerodynamic species that exist have very few extra appendages (think dolphins, falcons, cheetahs). These nubs and spikes remind me of a lionfish, which is a very slow-moving species of fish.
I don’t know about making it “difficult” to fly, but maybe slow them down. Night Furies are already incredibly fast dragons anyways so it doesn’t really matter.
I didn't realize Night Furies got that big! I went on a rant a couple days ago about Night Furies being an alpha species because they're shown as small in the movies, but apparently they grow considerably! They're still kinda small for alphas though.
they dont need to be big, not when the ancient could probably turn berk into a smoldering crater or blow a green death or bewilderbeast in half with a single plasma blast at that point
Yoooooo props for making the females larger in size, I was pretty annoyed whenever the HTTYD 3 came out and the light fury being smoother and smaller. She looked very fragile which wouldn’t be a good thing for the “Light” Fury. It was supposed to appeal to younger audiences though so I can’t blame the character designers. Either way this looks amazing! Also a question, would the females live longer or shorter depending on their size? The Ancient looks pretty big and I can imagine the Female looking bigger than the Male, but you did mention that some Night Fury’s don’t live longer than the Mature Age (I think) which I still question if the males would live longer? If you can’t answer that it’s alright just curious! Anyways have a good day! ^^
Maybe they made the female smaller because dragons are reptile-like, and with lizards (Which dragons seem closest to) males are often larger than the females. This isn't Disney being sexist, it's Disney being accurate.
Me throughout the whole thing: *GOD DAMN HOE MANY EAR NUBS DO THESE GUYS HAVE!!?* Me after watching: My favorite part of the design is how many ear nubs they get.
I'm just wondering which of these stages would be the Titan Wing. Would it start at the Mature stage, or later on? The extra and growing head nubs are a little strange, but when you've seen the same Night Fury (albeit with minor changes) your whole life, seeing something different is going to be seen as such
I actually think the female night furies are smaller but faster and the males are stronger but slower than the females but slower, I imagine this cause they mate for life so I feel like if they were ever attacked the females would be fast enough to bring their kids somewhere safe while the male holds them back and then she can join the fight
meh, lets take predatory birds, males are smaller and generally take home the prey to feed everyone, females are the big bulky ones able to defend their own young incase any trouble would occur, you get me?
Hiccup: Aight people, keep moving, nothing to see here, ignore the massive extremely rare ancient dragon, NO I HAVE NOT BEEN STANDING HERE FOR 300+ YEARS.
Baby: Chunky, wobbly, tiny ear nubs. Teen: Lanky, flies well, ear nubs grow longer. Adult: muscular, precise flier and deadly accurate with plasma blasts...ear nubs grow longer. Elder: capable of blasting entire islands asunder, vaporizing the greatest lakes, and flying across the world in mere hours... ...*ear nubs grow longer.*
I would've thought that the male nightfuries are usually bigger because night furies mate for life, so the male mate would be able to hunt and protect the female and their eggs. And since the lightfury is a similar to the nightfury, we would think male lightfuries are bigger, which I would think they would be, and I believe they showed it in the movie just pay close attention but that just depends on the lightfury.
For Many reptiles the females are larger. So i think itd make more sense for a female night fury to be larger im not to sure about size with axolotls tho (night furys were inspired by them as well)
@@Lolamy i believe night furies are more personality of a cat rather than have the same dymorphism than them, toothless was confirmed a "usless reptile" so i feel it would make more sense to have them have reptile dymorphism with some axolotl mixed in
It's always weird that people make the female dragons bigger and tougher when lizards are often the opposite, males tend to be be bigger and tougher while females are smaller. Reptiles as a whole I believe do have more larger females in sexual dimorphism, but specifically *lizards* have more large males in their sexual dimorphism.
@@SpookyYetPolite Don't argue with the ppl they want a small female dragon they can have it. Ppl want a [dainty] girl with [big eyelashes] and literal [dragon breasts]
tbh tootless gonna get big very big like big as like berwilderbeast or red death cuz isnt tootles a titan they can grow big like that giant berwilderbeast skeleton is giant
@@audzollma1352 I doubt it, i'm pretty sure that you have to be born as a titan dragon to be a titan, toothless is probably just a normal nightfury, if he was a titan, his description would basically be a overpowered oc's description lol. (I don't hate overpowered ocs.)
I would love to see at least a night fury in a show that’s absolutely giant and it makes a badass entrance in some show so sad that the last movie is already released so I’m praying that we get another one
I dont think it would have kept growing more ear nubs. Animals bodies don't tend to grow things if it doesn't need it. All those nubs would make it less aerodynamic.
Adult isn't accurate, and neither are the rest of the stages that happen after adult. At the end of the hidden world, hiccup is around 30-35, Toothless is the same age as hiccup, or very close to it, valka said that. There isn't any changes that happen to toothless when he's 30-35, so the longer growing of the ear nubs (on top of the head, not talking about the jaw ones because I think that's how Valka saw how old he was) after young adult doesn't really happen. Dominance display is not something that night furies get with age, Toothless had to fight and defeat an alpha to get the Dominance display. Yeah that's all I have to say, sorry I'm a bit of a "get it right" person and I correct people a lot.
@@STARTHEWINGEDWOLF I agree with most of your statements, but i'd assume with age they'd get scale cracking and wing tears. The discoloring of the scales i can also understand because older animals don't look as colorful/ vibrant as the younger ones. I also have to say that guaca is right in that this is more concept art rather then cannon art, so don't get mean with how this guy wants to draw Nightfuries. It's neither yours or my art, so we don't get to tell them how to draw.
Very cool. Thank you for sharing If your reading this I hope you have a great day and know. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV
