As a night jumper this hollywood jump is a blessing! It's an extreme exit. Paratroopers are commonly called a dirt dart. The Air Force called parachute drops trash detail. SSG Akers on the left door. This is A-Co 4/325 Airborne Infantry Regiment on Sicily Drop Zone at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 1989. Sicily Drop Zone is mainly pines and road, also pines and sand. During the hours of darkness, night vision found! The eyes adapt and night goggles help! OLD SCHOOL EXITS! AATW!

I was on this jump. Sgt Acres was an old School jumpmaster. Big chew in his mouth and barking out the commands. He was a great leader.

Man I feel old, because I am. 101st jump school graduated June 1958. C-123. Also jumped C-119 and C-130. We had to exit the aircraft up and out. The back blast was a bit much.

Good memories mostly, 82nd Airborne for 3.5 years and 25 jumps later most of them were good jumps, especially liked my chopper blast in PLDC sitting with my feet on the skid, best times

Door should have been open after equipment check. Its been a long time for me being a JM. You had to do your outside AC check with finger tips holding on and heels of your boots on the edge of the exit platform. Back then you could not wear goggles so it was really difficult to do your 360 degree check because of the wind and prop blast. Looks like the got smarter about that.

Jumpmaster was really poor. Poor hand and arm signals. Never checked the pip pin on his door check. Didn’t control the rate and flow of the jumpers out the door. He should have been de-certified.

Rate of flow looked great and that’s how we tried to do it when I was in Division. Do they purposely go slower these days?
@geodes4762
@geodes4762 3 года назад
Back in those days, very little effort was made to slow the stick once it started moving. “Stick pushers” made it doubly hard to follow the guidance of a one second interval much less a “staggering” of jumpers either side of the aircraft. Once that first jumper was out the door, it was a mad rush to the door. We had our share of entanglements and “chance meetings” under the aircraft due to this. My first jump from a C-130 at Aviano with B Co 1/509 in 1975 was a harrowing experience with guys literally running out the doors!

@@Rugaru I was part of the 3/325th in 89 and went to the 82nd Jumpmaster school in 78. The one thing that I always asked for from the loadmaster was, that if all possible I wanted an "honest" one-minute time warning. Sometimes it did not happen like that and then one felt rushed as one did not want to circle around. On one jump, thank goodness I was part of the Drop Zone party they had the aircraft fly at least four times around the drop zone because it was a twelve C-130 formation (in-flight rig from Italy to Germany), and the Drop Zone Safety Officer was "reluctant" (maybe felt pressure to not cancel) to cancel the drop due to wind conditions on the DZ; Ultimately it was canceled, much to the relief of the jumpers that had to circle around four times. At an altitude of 800 AGL, one could see the first jumper standing in the door and I did not envy him and was glad that for that training exercise I was part of the advance party. Good times!!!
@geodes4762

As I recall the “standby” command was used when jumping the C141. There was no command to “stand in the door” when jumping the 141.
