Night Market in Yangon

In this video we take a walk along Strand Road in Yangon to witness one of the World's longest Night markets. This night market stretches well over 2 kilometres as it runs along the side of Strand Road which is right next to Yangon River. The stalls lined up along this road sells all sorts of foods - mainly to local Yangonians looking for a bite to eat with friends or family after work. It is all cheap and cheerful. Everyone can grab a chair and join in with eating some cheap street food.

Wow, what a long stretch of street food stalls! I can eat just about anything there except the insects. Even though it's been 40 years since I left Myanmar I still consider Yangon to be my home and miss it very much. A lot of my old friends and relatives are still living there. In fact, some of my buddies who left the country like me are now back in Myanmar and who knows, one of these days I may return to my homeland for good too.

@@timwynn6079 Really, do you live in Myanmar? From what I hear from my old friends and relatives there, Yangon is now much more developed than in the past with huge shopping malls, new hotels, high end restaurants, etc.

I'm going to Myanmar and Laos later in the year. I traveled a lot in Asia 20 to 30yrs ago, but Burmese visas were a problem then. I'd like to check out Laos again, as well, but would be sorely disappointed if it has become more like Thailand.

Hi Polysi, You ask a very good question. When I first came to Yangon the advice from my work and people I know has always been to be careful about eating street food but then others say that fears about Yangon street food are exaggerated. Since I arrived here last August, I have suffered from eating infected food 3 times and every time it was from eating in a restaurant - not street food.

Hi, This is a really sad story. I hope it was without consequences. But is there fast food restaurants in Yangon? Like McDonalds or Burger King?

Thanks for the sympathy but it wasn't too bad - on each occasion I recovered within 3 days. As a westerner I probably have a digestive system more sensitive to bacteria than the average Burmese person. There are plenty of chain restaurants where the food is almost certainly safe - there are fast food places such as KFC, Pizza Hut and Lotteria. There are currently no McDonalds at all in Myanmar and only one Burger King - in the airport.

The attitude towards Europeans by Burmese people is very positive. I have only encountered friendliness and helpfulness from people here.
