Its that early 2000s suburban upbringing and East Coast Catholic school education. From all the stories he’s told on this channel, I feel like I must have grown up in the same time and place as him. Something about it must have been conducive for developing an ability for being well articulated and highly descriptive and creative with words. Must have been all that Bible study.
my interpretation of the story is: - the boss of whatever company is operating in the building is overworking and harassing his employees (source: we meet him on the first floor, other people we meet mentioning his power harassment and pushing unreasonable workload on them) - the woman in a red vest is one of the employees under him. she receives her share of harassment (first tape shows the boss yelling at an employee, presumably at her) - on top of harassment from her boss, she also gets bullied by her coworkers who push their share of work onto her (second tape shows female coworkers gossiping and talking smack about her). - one thing that I presume helps her cope is that she has a crush on the previous security guard who worked at this place before the player character, the one who "suddenly left his job" (as stated in the first note we see in our security booth). however, she's pushed beyond the breaking point when one of the female employees - the same ones who bullied her before - seduces said guard for no apparent reason than to spite her (the security tape footage we see on floor 5). it's the same woman we met at floor 2 who flirted with us and tried to get our contact info. - at this point, with the only way to cope with the workplace conditions taken away from her, I assume she's driven to commit unalive (source: the vague note from the previous security guard on floor 5, the crying woman in one of the bathrooms). apparently she did it by jumping off the broken emergency stairs, where all the police lines are, in the same way our character does in ending 1. - her grudge places a curse on the building, forcing her ex-coworkers into a sort of a time loop (source: the sleeping man saying the player characters is "always here" when he wakes up, one of the guys on earlier floors saying something to the same effect but in a less direct way, ending 1 showing you the footage of the entire game rewinding back to the start) (I assume the cleaning lady on floor 6's weird behavior is also attributed to this). - The ghost of the woman mistakes our character as the previous security guard, whom she had a crush on. It's a relatively common trope in japanese horror for ghosts to mistake a similar person for someone that they were emotionally attached to when they were alive. (source: the woman appearing to in her normal form after the fuse maze, the last tape where she confesses to the player character, ending 2) - In ending 1, the player character dies by falling off the broken emergency stairs (in the same way the woman presumably did) and keeps reliving the loop. In ending 2, since the correct code is his kid's birtday, I assume that implies the player character still has strong ties with his regular life and that gives him the strength to break out of the cycle, not for himself but for his family, although he's still haunted by the woman's ghost. All in all, I don't agree that the game has less substance than other chilla's games. The social themes that are present in other games are still here, and the storyline makes sense with a bit of digging. The technical aspect is definitely better, and on several playthroughs I also noticed there are some minor scares that are either missable or randomized. One thing that doesn't really tie into the storyline is the floor with the dolls, that one seems to be just horror for horror's sake. edit: NEVERMIND i just realized in ending A we're revealed to be keigo ochigi, the past security guard who apparently left his job, which makes things much more convoluted, meaning we were actually two-timing/three-timing our wife and that all the time loop was apparently within our head while we were lying in a coma
this is a really good analysis of the game, and i think youre spot on with the plot points! i think its a bit hard to parse when youre actually experiencing the game, because the game is pretty good at keeping you paranoid and confused, but honestly that makes it feel more terrifying to me. imagine going through all of that, only to leave feeling as if you still dont understand (i know if i were in that situation i wouldnt be able to figure all that out until much later)
Was it the daughters birthday or just the day the first security guard was killed by the ghost? I think ending 1 is implying that the first guard was killed and had gone through similar (almost exact) motions as the player character. By inputing the day that the ghost had her revenge, she lets you leave. You wake up in hospital to your family. You being the second security guard.
I work overnight security and it is very creepy. Even though I’ve walked around the outside and inside of the same building hundreds of times with nothing happening, I still get creeped out doing it every time.
I love Chilla's Art games, especially when they are ghost stories. This is probably their best game yet IMO, maybe tied with The Convenience Store. I also loved the silly humor in this one. "No abnormality" LMAO.
That moment when you know for sure that the 4th floor of an old building in a Japanese setting WILL have something. If you don't know, the number four in Japanese sounds very similar to "death" (shi) and there used to be cases where buildings would skip the floor altogether because if superstition. Add to that that 4 is also a non auspicious number in Feng Shui and you got yourself a guaranteed cursed floor on every horror game.
It seems liked it’d be nice to just sit down and have a chat with the librarian. Been watching for around a year and half now and this is probably the only channel I consistently watch, just hooked on the niche creepy comfy feeling not so commonly explored. Keep up the good work as usual
This game has some of the scariest jumpscares I've ever seen. I think it's buildup and atmosphere are both amazing! Butttt, I feel like it falls flat a little from floors 8 and up. 1-7 are SO GOOD tho. (also the Librarian missed the part on the electrical floor where there's someone else's footsteps! He was so scared that he kept constantly talking in a manner to ease his anxiety and so he didn't hear the other footsteps LOL)
Never clicked a thumbnail so fast in my life saw a lot of people playing this but I've been waiting because you're the only one I trust with chillis art games
Thanks for the 2nd hand terror. No matter how many of these I watch, whether on a sunny bird-chirpin' day or dark stormy night, I always react like a big dork at the jump scares. I went to Universal horror nights exactly one time, 5 years ago... my GF still makes fun of my horrified scream from Michael Myers popping out, even though I was the human shield in that case. 😱😆
Japanese Horror is kind of its own genré. They are not straight to the point even you get into the end of the story/movie/game unlike the Western Horror. With this, lot of theories are surrounding the Japanese Horror Stories to the point they become legendary/mythical.
well I'm hyped. im a new subscriber who learned of chillas art games through coryxkenshin. having a new entertaining youtuber take a crack at a new game is up my alley. thanks for the upload librarian
I've seen Manly's playthrough of thise game already, but I love watching your content and enjoy hearing your takes on games. Plus, I absolutely love Chilla's Art games. They have a certain charm about them, a sense of nostalgia. I'm not sure why.
Hey The Lieberman, do you plan on playing Alternate Watch (or I'm on Observation Duty) in the future? The games are kinda slow but I think you would like them. Would be cool to see
Hello Librarian, not sure you are going to read this, but i just want you to know that we love your content and we love what you do. Your channel has a perfect creepy, cozy, relaxing vibe and it's something that's almost therapeutic to me. Im sorry for my bad english. And as in my previous comments, id like to suggest you Yume Nikki, It fits perfectly in your channel vibe and im sure lot of people would love to see Yume Nikki gameplay from you.

Very funny that he did not notice the vending machine fall over behind him when he enters the lift to go up to floor 6; to be fair, it doesn't seem to make any noise, and you'd think it would be really loud (unless the implication is the ghost stealthily blocking the way, since we've seen it manipulate the building and objects already?)
This game is genuinely horrifying. From the atmosphere to the design of the ghost. Such an amazing game. I can't wait to see more Chilla's games in the future.
31:38 YES, I do that all the time when getting a drink/snack at night. I don't want to necessarily protect myself from danger, only my eyes from spooky sights.
57:37 I decided to play through most of this game then watch this video to this part, when I was in there I didnt even react until I saw the stall door open, then i wiped my view around and stuck my face in the wall
I know this is an off comment, probably. But will you possibly be doing more GM exploration in particular of a really wonderful map called Vacant_Industry? It seems to be relatively recent and after running through it I thought 100% of your videos. It does require carrying a few physics objects across long distances though, so not sure if it would be VR compatible, hopefully you would be able to run it smoothly in VR though because its a goddamn beautiful exploration map.
I did nighshift at a factory for awhile. In the QC lab. All alone. Tbh, it stopped being spooky really fast, and became mostly boring. Luckily, phones.
My main -- not problem, per se, maybe reservation? -- about indie horror is having a story try to be deep but just end up confusing and incoherent. That said, the atmosphere and scares were great anyway
Ever thought about a Fallout 4 Survival playthrough with a custom goal? Just ditch the main storyline and end the project once you've reached a certain, self set goal (like building the perfect settlement, or reaching a certain location on the map, etc.) Since you can't save without sleeping, every death can be treated like some sort of dark premonition, seen through your dreams :D Since the games engine's quite... unique, some loss in immersion is pretty much pre-insured, but nonetheless it could be quite the experience, especially one to share.
At my last security gig they had us be cashiers on off hours, so replacing lightbulbs isn't far fetched. You just kind of do what you're told or get fired
Theory: We are Keigo Ochigi. Keigo was in a relationship with the girl in red. Keigo cheated on her with the girl who asked for his contact information. Because of that, the girl in red committed suicide on the rooftop. This explain why the more we go up, the more haunted it becomes. Keigo quit the job after realizing what the girl who asked for his information did. 10 years or so later, he married another woman and have a daughter with her. He was on his way to work, when he got into an accident, leading to him in a coma. During said coma, he relived the same experience when he was still workin there, haunted by his ex-girlfriend and his guilts and regrets. When he woke up, he was happy to see his family. But that wasn't the end of it. He was still haunted by his regrets and guilts. Him putting in the code '1023" which is his daughter's birthday is a way of him escaping the purgatory he has to relive over and over again (ending 1) thus waking up from his coma (ending 2).
