Version 2 of the famous boogie woogie tune made famous by Duke Ellington then later James Brown. My interpretation on Hammond organ. Enjoy!

The Hamond B3! One of music's most beautiful sounds with that warm tone. I've been a fan since I was about 3 years old. I didn't even know what an organ was but I've always been attracted to this sound!

Thanks much Don! I’ve worked very hard at making it less digital and as authentic as possible. The 2 12AX7 tubes really help!
@donf3877
@donf3877 3 года назад
@@KyleWhitlock-Music Yep!!! Tubes make a amazing difference. I ran concert sound for years (decades). Nobody could figure out why the vocals sounded so warm and rich with me running the board. I had (still have at the home studio) an old 1950's tube compressor on the vocal subgroup. Was re-painted [why?] with no lettering [why?], but by the design of it I'm pretty sure it's Orban. Didn't use it for much compression... just had it in-line on the insert chain to warm everything up with the tubes. Have an Orban 526A [the best one] Dynamic Sibilance Controller (de-esser) first, then the compressor. When I was running sound, these were in a separate rack and hidden from view. Don't (didn't) want to give the secrets away!!! I also have an Orban 245F [the best one] Stereo Synthesizer on the direct out for the guitar channel, then back in on the aux returns. All of these are the old blue face units, and of course all are analog. Orban is ultra high end television and radio studio equipment. Most people don't like their equipment because it's usually hard-wire instead of plug-in (meant to spend years in a rack). Their Optimod is something else for FM stations. There was a country station in Toledo Ohio and another in Detroit Michigan that had the same national program on at night. The difference between the two stations was like stereo and mono. Huge difference!!! You can still get Orban equipment on Ebay and other used markets... they are many times the price of new equipment, but worth it! BTW... I sent this video to a friend that plays keyboards. My memo was... this is why you suck on keyboards. You don't have enough of them!!! Subbed and will be checking out all of your videos.......

@@donf3877 yes and if you are a collector (me) you can never ever have enough keys. I’ve loved following the technology that each of my keyboards has since the mid 70’s. Never fail to be amazed.
@donf3877
@donf3877 3 года назад
@@KyleWhitlock-Music There are just SO MANY different keyboard manufacturers that had great products... but went belly up. Some, like Farfisa... for a reason. Oops... hope you don't like them, to me they sounded dreadful. Like they were trying to imitate everyone else at the exact same time. But, it could have been the guy setting it up and playing it, too. I'm still trying to figure out what organ Steve Winwood was playing back in the early days on a video off RU-vid, "Spencer Davis Group Finnish TV 1967 Live". I don't think it was a Hammond, because it had big flip up down levers like a Lowrey or pipe organ. But yet, it seemed to have sliders on the far left side. But the switch over was hard and instant with a flip of a lever, instead of like pulling the drawbars out on a Hammond. Also, don't think it was running through a Leslie. More like a built-in tremolo, as it was also instant instead of winding up and down. Probably running through a guitar amp because it was pretty distorted. BUT YET... it had the Hammond growl. Have your heard of, or seen any of, Lachy Doley's videos??? He's out of Australia. He totally abuses his B3......... but, he also has a Hohnor Clavinet that has been modified with this big four foot or longer WHAMMY BAR that sticks out of the top of it. More like what would be on a guitar. And, he uses it that way. He plays a version of Voodoo Child on it that's absolutely mind blowing. (you could probably do the same thing with the pitch control on a synth... it just looks more impressive with him banging on that bar :) It's great to chat with someone that loves the tech, and is just as knowledgeable, as he is with his playing. Instead of like Odd Ball in Kelly's Heroes, "Hey man...I only ride 'em... I don't know what make 'em work"!!!
@KyleWhitlock-Music
@KyleWhitlock-Music 3 года назад
@@donf3877 love Lachy’s stuff!! Very envious😊 HELL of a player. I remember seeing George Duke play the whammy bar trick on the clavinet years ago. That is definitely the closest a keyboard instrument will ever come to sounding like a real electric guitar. Going now to search for that Spencer Davis video you mentioned

Hi Kyle. Just found this masterpiece. Awsome performance. I played the hammond a couple of years in my early teens before sports took all my time. Have had thoughts on picking up playing again for some years and now at 54 this video made me deside to really begin again. Thanks for the inspiration and an awesome video. There is no better sound than a hammond.

There's no sound quite like a Hammond.I have been around all sorts of musicians and every keyboard guy that I've ever met gets downright rhapsodic about the way a Hammond sounds in conversation. I like it because it's great for vamping and a long slow groove.

You sound fantastic! A couple of questions... I can’t tell - are you playing an XK5 or XK3C (whichever one, it sounds great)... and which chorus are you using? It sounds a little gentler than C3, and damn good. And finally - are you using an external Leslie or one of the onboard “cabinets”? My preferred XK5 Leslie sim is (as of the moment, anyway) the “145/Gentle”. I think this is the first time I’ve heard this song played on an organ - again, great job!
@KyleWhitlock-Music
@KyleWhitlock-Music 2 года назад
Thank you buddy!! I’m playing an XK3c through a Neo Ventilator 2 Leslie emulator pedal. I believe I used the C3 setting. I’m using Jim Alfredson’s tone wheel set with a slight modification of my own to the Chorus settings. After I recorded this video I added a Lounsberry Tall Fat & Wide pedal for extra preamp oomph

@@KyleWhitlock-Music I have an original Vent; it’s presently connected to my previous clone, a Nord C1. I mean to put the XK5 through it soon. What it did for the Nord was amazing; my guess (HOPE) is that it does even more for the XK5...!
