Father, You Were Strong (Chichiyo, You Were Strong), a war song released by Columbia Records on January 20, 1939 (Showa 14). Old registration number 30110. Words and composition Osaka Asahi Shimbun and Tokyo Asahi Shimbun applied for an award for "Song of Thanks to the General of the Imperial Army" in October 1938. The first award of this recruitment is "Father, You Were Strong" and the honorable mention is "Thank you, soldiers." The lyrics were written by a female general named Setsu Fukuda, and in composing the song, Kosaku Yamada and 12 composers including Ryoichi Hattori were asked to compose the song, which was then released on the test board for the general public. Among this group of works, a song composed by Kyosei Akemoto, a new composer exclusively for Columbia, was selected as a song that often coincided with the sentiments of the masses. It belongs to a genre of its own, known as 'Gunka' or military music.
