My mother's father is a WW II veteran and fittingly, he passed on D Day in 1966 in Iowa. I'm so proud of him now as an adult and registered Daughter of the American Revolution, 1776 in Washington, DC. He served in the US Army Corp of Engineers after graduating from Engineering School at Iowa State University with his 3 engineering brothers.

I think it is a crime that the retired school teacher from Pennsylvania has not ever had a cost of living increase. As for myself, I am 79 years old and am a Substitute School teacher. I have never wanted to retire, and I am thankful to God that I can still work. The combination of my monthly SS payment and income from my job get me by and I am comfortable. I don't have a car, and I do not want one. I rely on buses and walking. I can take a cab, but that is rarely necessary. I do not have Internet, but I have my Prepaid Smartphone which also gives me RU-vid so that I can keep up with the News, as well as old movies, which I really enjoy.

I know the point of the specific folks chosen for the retirement story was to make even middle/upper middle class people feel represented in their economic sacrifices, but oh man. That old lady had a really really nice house. She had to sacrifice cable and her favorite foods? and mulch? I mean, I agree it’s not fair when you don’t get what you thought you were promised (although she didn’t say she was promised a cost of living increase) but there are retirees who are struggling with actual scarcity. Same for the business owner guy. He did not look that old, and he was clearly helping his young son take over the business, a business that evidently has the capital to purchase and maintain equipment like the ones in the video. I’m not saying their stories aren’t worth telling, but many of your audience members probably see those two people as lucky and well-off
Do you think that retired teacher cleans her own house? She might have groceries delivered, she might rely on a senior aide to help her prep meals twice a week. Avoiding a fall is the biggest thing for her. Those of us who have seen our elders fall and die within six months, it’s a miracle for us to see that woman thriving in her old age.
Retirement? Puh-leez. When I started working decades ago, I knew there would be no such thing. Where I live, people of retirement age still work because it's so expensive even before covid hit.

Oh yeah, they also get to collect Social Security if they are old enough. Former House Speaker Paul Ryan, who when he was in office wanted to gut Social Security along with other social programmes seniors and the disabled depend on, receives an 86,000$ annual pension. That is 7 times what I get on Social Security a year and 9 times what you mother receives. On top of it he is also a wealthy to boot, worth about 7.5$ million. They got theirs and give the big middle finger to us.
Just before retiring, look for countries that have less expensive costs of living. Many ex pats live in such countries, have health care, afford to buy a home, even afford to have a pet or two, and live with solely SS and/or small amount of financial pensions. Some even work part time simply to keep active.
We were told that by the time we reached the age to collect Social Security that it would no longer be there. The government kept re-appropriated money out of Social Security to spend on other things. So we didn't expect any Social Security. What Social Security you get is worth about 25 cents on the dollar.
..also the affluent and wealthy stop paying into it in less than a month whereas the the average citizen paid into it all of their working lives. Time to seriously raise or better yer scrap the earnings cap as that is what is strangling the programme.

Americans fought a long, hard, cold war against Communism. That was enough to allow American lawmakers to turn up their noses any time a program was labeled as "Socialism." However, that's the same reason that America has been left behind. It has embraced capitalism so completely that it has failed to take advantage of the obvious efficiencies and effectiveness that government organization can bring to areas like health care and education. Other countries have seen these opportunities for progress, are assisting their citizens, and have been surging ahead. Americans have been left to just watch as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Of course, there's nothing left to save for retirement! Vote Blue!

Retirement. It is reality that one must continue working way past 65 years of age. I'm 70 years old and expect to work another five years. I should have some $250,000 at that time, but is it enough? I worry for those who did not invest the way I did. I will work until I die to ensure the people I love most in the world get a nice inheritance! That's how I see it.
...not everyone makes enough to invest or even have enough to put in savings (which from the banks garners little if any interest unless you have 10,000$ or more to deposit up front) thanks to low stagnant wages and rising living costs, particularly for housing and healthcare..
