I remember when I graduated from high school. I was very stressed out. The sanctuary of high school was over. I was terrified, I was scared. The sanctuary of living at home was over. My parents were headed for divorce. Where was I going to go? What was I going to do? How was I going to make my way in the world? That was 47 years ago. These kids these days have even less help than I did,- certainly less hope.

If we taxed corporations like we did in the 1950s, we'd be ok. How can they require work for people that are needing help? If I could work, I wouldn't be needing govt assistance. I'm on Disability, and forced into homelessness because of the lack of sufficient funds. I'm lucky to have an RV for shelter, but campgrounds cost more than I could budget, even if no other expenses. I get $25/mo for Food Stamps. It's not a livable amount. Especially when the govt won't recognize my seizure medication as a medical expense... Stop hurting the poor and Disabled.

georgean I agree. If ever there was a time to listen it is now. It's almost too little too late. People have been complaining about how unregulated the tech industries are. Monopolies, defense contracts and secrecy, and all the while AI. On a related topic, it is illegal to run a business out of your house without proper inspection, permits, council approvals, etc. And yet there are still all these start ups from garages and no one blinks an eye. Are we so enamored or enthralled by what our little phone can do that we just turn a blind eye (the third one I guess that's not glued to the phone) on this out of control industry that is also turning into oligargies if not outright monopolies. Disney is the worst offender. At Carnegie Mellon U the super secret defense contracts have turned a good university into a tech think tank with little or no oversight.

He didn’t say he is scared. He didn’t say his worst fears have been realized. In the intro to this news episode, they presented the info in a way that makes it seem like the AI Exec said those things, but when you get to the part of the news reel where AI exec talks, you keeping waiting for him to say those things, but he never does. Sharing one’s worst fears is a long way from say you’re afraid or from saying your worst fears have come true. Yes, regulation is needed and makes sense to help prevent undesirable outcomes or “worst fears” from being a reality, but twisting the worst fears of the exec to fit a narrative or to sell news is the actual “worst fear” that occurred in this news reel.

As a historical note, US financial markets became quite heavily and effectively regulated in the fallout from the 1930s stock market collapse. Then one-by-one over the decades, those protections were removed by the US congress (mostly at the instigation of "free market" conservatives, though few were blameless). I recall some mention about twenty years ago in the business press that one of the last Depression-era restrictions had been rescinded. That of course set the stage for the next financial collapse in 2009 (though only a near-collapse, since there was more wealth to throw at the self-inflicted probelm this time around). AI regualtion on the other hand is probably about like what you are saying. Akin to the so-called "nuclear genie" in terms of not being able to put it back in the bottle once it's out. Some people and countries will be able to gain wealth and power and influence from its development and deployment, so trying to say "no" will only shift who the winners are rather than actually throttle the technology.

More complete reporting needed here. This is really about Hudson County having a disorganized Human Resources Agency, and being angry at NYC about a firestorm created by Abbott in Texas. Texas border towns receive funds from INS and the federal government for processing and housing asylum seekers and immigrants. All border towns do. NYC does not, because it is not a border town. Texas needs to be audited for how those INS funds are being spent, and Texas needs to share those funds with NYC if they are asking NYC to house asylum seekers who cross their borders. Except Abbott doesn't "ask"; he is not professional enough to let NYC know how many buses are coming or even a breakdown of how many families vs. single males, etc. California has a better system of organization and communication. Abbott always wants to be on CSPAN with his hair on fire creating drama so that he can get attention. If he behaved more professionally, he might make better use of INS funding for border necessities. INS funds should be allocated more fairly among several states, if Texas doesn't want to do the job, then NYS can allocate those funds fairly to several counties, Hudson county included, not just NYC because Abbott decides to dump several buses in Port Authority.

Lol. I was there also; watching HAL on the big screen in Leicester Square in London. : ) I hope AI DOES take over the world. We humans have defaced and degraded it so much. How WRONG we have been, especially venal governments (one after another) with their horrible decisions right around the world. Irrespective of what you call a political party, I find them irresponsible and too argumentative. I don't hear any members screaming aggressively for lower food prices. Why? Because their salaries and perks allow them and THEIR families to be quite comfortable thank you very much. So much for representing their constituents.

I just hope that Biden doesn't cave in, since the Republicans want to cut important programs to help veterans and the disabled. They want cuts to Meals on Wheels, a program that helps seniors. They want preschool programs for low-income Americans like Head Start discontinued We need to reduce spending, but not for programs that help the most vulnerable while giving big tax cuts to the wealthy.

The constant misinterpretations of the second amendment are not supporting their struggles with mental health, it is enabling suicidal ideation and worse. I am blind, I live basically on food stamps, which is, part of public assistant, I live in subsidize housing, the job market for those of us who are blind is well over 70%, I couldn’t get a job if I wanted to. I have no computer skills whatsoever. And if I were to get a job, it would be like rolling silverware, part time, and that doesn’t pay for anything. Not many employers want to hire blind people. So I have no choice.
