Nightly setup of part of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo lighting.

Lighting check and raising of the PRG Icon Beam lights into position. They're on wind-up stands so they can be retracted below the wall during the day as Edinburgh Castle is a very popular tourist destination well worth visiting if you want a REAL non-Disneyfied castle experience. This is one of many layers of lights used in the castle for extra visual effect during the show.
All filming done by Captain Graham.

Well, thank you to Captain Graham for doing the camera work as it's fun to watch you running about free of it for a change, and it felt a bit more TV and a bit less RU-vid this way, plus you look very smart in your castle wear. The bit with you running up the Lang stairs to the Firworks just proves vowels move around a lot in Edinburgh.

I took a tour at the castle back in '85. I highly recommend it. The guide had that quintessentially Scottish sense of humor. Told us about the salute they fire every day at one pm., "because that's the most economical time for a Scotsman to fire a salute." He also told us about the tradition of the lone piper up on the battlements, and that they had to have a specially harness because due to the wind, "we lost many a lone piper." Also, do to the wind, the piper wears a specially weighted kilt, "because we can't be giving out the national secret."

The cannon reminded me of a proms concert held at the castle in Cape Town in the late 90's where at the conclusion of the 1812 overture the military set off several 25 pounders loaded with blanks just outside the castle. Unfortunately they positioned the guns facing Cape Town train station and the concussion ended up disabling a large number of signals and causing major disruptions.

Clive, I have been to that Castle and seen the Retreat. Next to meeting family in Scotland, Edinburgh was the highlight of my stay. An amazing place if I could have stayed I would have never left. Your cool points just went way up seeing you working on that lighting. I have to say your lighting is what makes that show. Without how well the lighting is done it would be just a bunch obnoxiously loud pipers running into each other. I should say my wife is a drummer so that what see liked. I appreciate the behind the scenes look. Thanks.

@2:44 When I was a touring, if the venue was setup for it, I had a huge PVC frame that fit together with a very thin, white cloth that stretched across it. A little wood riser platform went behind it and the whole thing went behind the band and between the curtains (it was very venue specific but was well worth it even with the 15-20% use we got out of it) and behind all this I had one of my Wildfire 1000some watt UV lights (which stayed hot for hours after a show, *_perfect_* for touring). We'd get people from the crowd (and one of our roadies was quite good too) and have them dance on the platform... with everything set just right you wound up with a giant glowing panel with a 20'+ tall shadow dancing on it, so shadows aren't always bad !!!!

@hydrusje
@hydrusje 7 лет назад
It's not a Road Hog 4, it's a Full Boar 4, the RH4 is smaller with a single 22" screen ;) The full Boar 4 is about the same format as the Roadhog 3 was though. I work on a RH4 quite often which has indeed 4 DMX ports and/or 8 universes on the network. The Full Boar 4 also has 4 DMX ports built in and/or 12 universes over network. + moving faders, 5th encoder, trackball, grand master, LCD screens on the command keys,.... The Hog 4 (that's the top of the line full size one) has a DP8000 built in: 8 dmx ports, and/or 16 universes on the network. + rate wheel and intensity wheel + center touchscreen and encoder + adjustable angle screens. All in all nice consoles (from the roadhog up, don't care much for the hedgehog) but they need some work on the software front, let's hope ETC will help High End with that.
@debbie62140
@debbie62140 7 лет назад
On closer inspection of the video I think we are both wrong. Clive says what sounds like 'Whole Hog' but it isn't that. The highend.com website reveals that it's a HOG 4.
@hydrusje
@hydrusje 7 лет назад
You are right, it is indeed the Full size Hog 4 with the center touchscreen. There is also a Roadhog 3 playback wing in that video (the blue wing to the left of the hog 4) To the right you can see the smaller Hog 3 PC playback wing. And another full size Hog 4 in the back for the backup. (lots of overkill, could do the backup with a tiny PC and a wing, but hey, that's what PRG has so they use it ;) )

Thanks Clive that's much appreciated :) also I'm in Cheltenham in the UK. I will one day get to see the Tattoo in person but for the time being the BBC is as close as I can get.

Manfrotto 087NWB (B for black :p ) It's a combination of a gear rack and a steel cable with a pulley. As you rotate the crank a cog engages with holes in the bottom tube (just as a gear rack) this slides up the bottom tube. This then pushes up a steel cable over a pulley which pulls up the inner tube. Quite a nice compact and lightweight system. Other crank stands (like Genie, Guil, Fantek, VMB, Work,...) mostly have a crank winch, and these take more room (because they need the drum for the winch cable)

Painfully slow. That's how. Here in the US, I have some stands targeted for the consumer/DJ grade user. Mine have wonderful hexagonal studs for attaching a drill. Quick up and down.

How much power do you think you're drawing a night? Must be an awesome amount.

Not sure, but progressively less over time as we gradually transition to newer more efficient light sources.
