It's incredible now to look back at what guys like Rick Baker, Tom Savini, Greg Nicotero, et al did back then. Crazy inventive, time consuming stuff that they often had to film in one shot. And all of it is better than the computer stuff today.

I think they did a good job. The point was pushing the 3 returning characters out of the movie so Freddy can just go after the new kids. And instead of giving them like 5 minutes, they gave them a good amount of time to show their personalities for a while, and then be killed off.

Biggest mistake of the series was pushing these films to be completed within years of each other. It worked for this one capitalizing on dream warriors' popularity but I think we all can agree dream child suffered because of it. I would have liked to see them push that movie til 90 or 91 allowing audiences to want to see Freddy again and the filmmakers more time to develop a better movie. Cause this to me was a proper wrap up to the first 3 films.
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 8 лет назад
+Alec Scheller Pt 5 definitely could have used another six months of development to polish the script and story and an extra few months of filming time so they could try some of the more unique and creative ideas they originally had for it, had they done that it would have been a fitting epilogue to the series and pt 6 most likely wouldn't have been made. There are two key events that more or less forced New Line into realizing that the popularity of the slasher genre was starting to wane: Friday the 13th PT: VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan bombed at the box office causing paramount to cease pre-production on pt 9 and cancel the project before indefinitely shelving the series (which would lead to the sale of its rights to New Line a few years later), The newest Halloween movie (pt 6) went straight to video because the distributors couldn't get it into theaters. After those events happened they knew that if they waited too long they might risk having ANOES 5 be a total bomb despite it being a well put together and well written movie with a good story great effects and good acting if they gave it an extra six months of development and filming time then released it in late summer or early fall of 1990 (when it would have been competing with the oscar winning Misery) so they rushed the production schedule to ensure that they didn't miss the window in which they could be sure it would make money.
@alecosfan
@alecosfan 8 лет назад
+Hammerhead547 Well said my friend. I think a October or the February (capitalize on the misery Oscar buzz for horror) release date would have worked. As for the poor showing for Halloween and F13 part 8 while i have no doubt it effected the decision to rush the film it shouldn't have. New Line missed a huge opportunity to stop the free fall of the Slasher genre and go into buying the F13 series with consumer confidence that they can bring new life into later sequel entries by taking the time to make Dream Child good. Ill always wonder what could have been if late 80s horror was treated with care instead of as a cash grab.
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 8 лет назад
Alec Scheller According to the Never Sleep Again documentary they had all sorts of really cool ideas for dream child that would have made it a fantastic movie if they'd had the time to make the movie the way it should have been made. Unfortunately it was one of those cases where they had advertising posters made and a predetermined release date for it before they even had a first draft script done so most of the cool ideas were either toned down or taken out to allow for the rushed production schedule. Even the director (who was interviewed on the Never Sleep Again documentary) said that if they'd had more time and a finalized script (they were working from a script that was literally being filmed as pages were being written) iit would have allowed him to really pursue his vision for what the film could have been the final product could have easily been the best film in the series, He also said that because they were so tightly scheduled he didn't even have time to argue with the mpaa over the cuts they demanded to be made to the movie which is why the kills were so neutered. It would have been a smart idea for New Line to put the nightmare series on a bi-yearly release schedule (one every other halloween) so they could give each production team enough time to perfect every element of the production so that they could return the best possible finished product. Doing so would have also allowed audiences time to forget about freddy for a little while thus making the next movie a treat to see and ensuring the highest possible return on investment (sort of like they do with the James Bond Movies). Just imagine what Renny Harlin could have done with PT 4 with a year to perfect the script six months to shoot the film and five or six months of post production, it could have been a major blockbuster that could have creamed the competition and been the first slasher movie to be nominated for an oscar or golden globe..
@alecosfan
@alecosfan 8 лет назад
+Hammerhead547 I love that documentary glad I'm not the only one to have seen it. However with Renny Harlin was in the perfect spot as a young director he needed a certain degree of production constraint because of his outlandish ideas. Though that is the perfect series for those ideas to come to fruition without limits on Renny's direction I doubt that movie remains comprehensible, just look at what he did to Deep Blue Sea. As for Oscar talk it will never happen for a pure Slasher like aNoES because of the people who vote. SFX is the only possible chance for them and regardless of what Renny could have would have and did do with the Fx I doubt it would have been able to overcome Who Framed Rodger Rabbit who won and Die Hard. Their best chance for a nomination in my mind was what could have been if they gave part 5 a chance. Watching what could have been in that documentary took dream child from one of my worst in the series to one of the better ones. Btw how would you rank the aNoES movies worst to first?

@@billysixx2910Yap! CGI is used in movies since the '80s, and used as a tool is great. The problem is, as you said, the overuse, the overdose that makes me sick. As far I am concerned the superhero movies are just a bunch of videogame cutscenes with the heads of famous actors.... Since they need such amount of FX I would have preferred some animated movies and I mean the real ones, not the CGI cold roaches that Dreamworks and Pixar are vomitatin' on screens. Check the best superhero movie ever: Batman - Mask Of The Phantasm (since it's from 1993 and not the '80s, they can't accuse me of nostalgia)

***** Yeah Part 2 had some solid kills... I just like the idea of the 5 year follow up with Nancy after the first film and how she passes the torch to Kristen in the 3rd only to have Kristen pass it to Alice... it flows nicely.. doubt it was intentional but I also like how the three heroines goes from a brunette to a blonde to a redhead lol

Nightmare 4 was way more fun than Part 3 and NEVER gets the respect it deserves. Sure, Part 3 was better written overall but it’s pacing was slow to me, it wasn’t that scary and it tended to plod along at certain moments. Part 4 was fast paced and a genuinely fun movie with very memorable one-liners and the greatest effects in the franchise. It also cannot be overlooked that this film exacerbated “Freddy Mania” and launched him into Superstar territory in popular culture, and television for better or worse; eventually landing him a gig as a VJ on MTV. This film’s impact and ingenious effects must be respected. Over the years, this has become the film I look forward to the most every October when I run these films down.
