How long would you guess is a flight from Manchester to Madeira? 3 hours? 4 hours? 5 maybe? Well, back in late January, TUI passengers arrived in Madeira around 60 hours after setting off from Manchester. Their unwanted odyssey even became the most-watched flight on tracking websites!

What is wierd is that aren't the pilots supposed to be told that the weather in their destination is bad before they even take off

The problem was wind conditions, which can change rather quickly, and the distance between the diversion airports was very small (around 35 miles from Porto Santo to Madeira, and 320 miles from Tenerife South to Madeira).

Technically it's not 60 hours..this would include time for passengers asleep and time on the ground

wonder of the passengers got free hotel stays and meal vouchers from the airline - normally there's no compensation for bad weather

Fell foul of Madeira coming home arrived at Madeira airport at 10:30 got back to Gatwick the following day 16:00 via Porto.

Would the passangers rather the pilots land regardles in dangerous conditions and risk killing everyone ? Madeira is notorious for bad conditions. I would imagine passengers got hotels booked for them and got some kind of compensation
